Chapter 489
Chapter 489: Chapter 489
It wasn’t long before Carol’s color seemed off, and Clark asked with concern, "What’s wrong? Are you not feeling well?"
"I’m fine."
Seeing her huddled up, Clark anxiously asked, "Is it the poison acting up? I’ll get Rose."
"Don’t," Carol quickly grabbed Clark’s hand, her voice straining with pain. "She’s hurt. Let her rest. I can hold on."
She had survived like this before.
Countless times, when the poison acted up, she had endured it by sheer willpower.
"I can’t stand by and do nothing. It must hurt." Clark tried to remove her hand.
But Carol held his hand tighter and pleaded, "Clark, I can handle it. I can’t rely on Rose every time I have an attack. The poison strikes randomly, and I have to deal with it myself."
Seeing her writhing in pain, her voice now barely a whisper, Clark’s heart ached. "How can I help?"
"Please leave." Carol didn’t want him to see her in such a pitiful state. "Give me some time."
She could handle it.
"You always do this, hiding your pain from me because you don’t want me to worry. This time, let me stay with you."
Clark gently stroked her back and other unhurt parts, trying to soothe her.
But no matter what he did, the venom inside her body was something beyond her control and not something that could be eased by his gentle touch.
Carol was in so much pain that tears streamed down her face. The agonizing pain was unbearable, and her tears flowed involuntarily.
It hurt so much.
Her pain was so intense that it felt like her whole body was in agony, pushing her towards the brink of despair.
Seeing her in such agony, Clark remembered a terrifying dream he had recently, where Carol was suffering from a venom attack, crying in pain.
In his dream, he wanted to help her but was helpless, wiping her tears and holding her in his arms.
Now, he let go of Carol’s hand and ran upstairs.
In his haste, he moved so fast that he pulled his wound, but he did not care.
"Rose! Rose!!!"
He quickly reached the second floor, knocked on Rose’s door, and said anxiously, "Are you awake? Carol’s poison is acting up. Can you help her? She’s in great pain. Rose??"
Soon, the door opened, and Romeo appeared, carrying Rose.
"Go to my room. Fourth row, count four drawers from the left, and get an acupuncture kit," Rose instructed.
Clark’s mind was a blank, but hearing his sister’s words, he instinctively responded, "Okay."
Acupuncture kit. Acupuncture kit.
He rushed to get it.
Romeo carried Rose downstairs, and Clark, clutching the acupuncture kit, followed them. Carol was already sobbing on the couch.
Her tears were flowing freely, and her forehead was covered in sweat.
"Carol." Clark wanted to comfort her, to help ease her pain.
But Rose said calmly, "Step aside."
Carol was in excruciating pain. Touching her now would only make her feel worse.
Romeo set Rose down, and she immediately opened the acupuncture kit and inserted the needles into several of Carol’s key points.
Carol’s shaking lessened, but her face was still pale, and she looked weak and listless.
Rosemary continued to administer the injections, simultaneously sending one of her subordinates to fetch the recently developed pills from her lab.
After swallowing one, Carol seemed to regain some strength. With her eyelids barely lifted, she managed to whisper, "Thank you, Rosemary."
She was feeling much better now.
At least the pain wasn’t as excruciating as before.
"What’s the need for formalities? Just rest up," Rosemary said as she put away the needles. "This pill should keep you safe for the next 12 hours."
In other words, the poison wouldn’t act up for the next 12 hours.
She could finally get some rest.
"Rose, if the poison in her system keeps acting up at irregular intervals, what can we do? Is there a quick way to alleviate her pain?" Clark asked.
"These two pills—only take them if absolutely necessary," Rosemary handed over a small bottle. "They’re very potent, and I worry her body might not be able to handle it."
Clark nodded, securing the bottle in his grasp.
"We have a plane waiting outside. Once we’re back home, I’ll need to run some blood tests."
Rosemary wasn’t sure what kind of poison Carol had been exposed to, so for now, all she could do was help with the pain and figure out a treatment plan later.
Looking at Carol, who was lying weakly on the couch, Rosemary said gently, "She used to treat herself with poison to counteract the poison. This has made the toxin in her body increasingly complex and difficult to neutralize."
Carol lifted her weak eyelids, looking at Rosemary in surprise. She hadn’t expected the young woman to know about her unique form of treatment.
"The medicine you hid in the vitamin C bottle—I took some for testing," Rosemary explained. "I apologize for barging into your room without your permission."
"I know you were helping Clark find clues. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be here. So it’s me who should thank you," Carol weakly smiled. "Thank you, Rosemary. I owe you my life twice over."
Once was when Chester attacked her, and Rosemary risked her life to save her.
And now, with this poison. Rose had helped her detox three times since yesterday!
"You also saved me. We’re like family. There’s no need for thanks," Rosemary looked at Clark. "Can you carry Carol, or should I have my people do it?"
The plane was waiting outside; it was time to leave.
"I can do it," Clark stated confidently.
"Then, let’s get going."
As soon as Rosemary finished speaking, Romeo, standing next to them, scooped her up in his arms.
"Oh, by the way, Rose is my sister, and this is my brother-in-law, Romeo," Clark introduced formally.
Only then did Carol take a good look at the man next to her. She hadn’t noticed anyone else when she was in excruciating pain.
Now, knowing that Romeo was Edith’s future brother-in-law and the current richest man, she was surprised. No wonder Edith mentioned that her sister and brother-in-law would see this through.
They certainly had the means to do so.
"Hello," Carol simply nodded, her pale face wearing a mild smile.
"Hello, Carol," Romeo also greeted her, then turned to Rosemary in his arms and said, "Everything’s been arranged back home. Let’s leave."
The fish were practically jumping into their net.
"Okay," Rosemary nodded.
Clark gently lifted Carol. "Does it hurt?"
Though Carol shook her head, her face flashed a pained expression. Clark felt a pang of guilt. "Did I touch your wound? I’m sorry. I’m so clumsy."
"I’m fine," Carol reassured him with a smile.
Seeing her pale smile, Clark decided that he’d make sure to help her regain her strength when they got back.
She was much too thin and lightweight now.
