Devoted Love:The Billionaire's Precious Wife -
Chapter 396
Chapter 396: Chapter 396
"I’m on my period, you can check if you don’t believe me."
She was sure that Jennifer, a woman of high society, wouldn’t ask her to strip in public just to prove it.
But Jennifer found her claim amusing. Did those girls think they could pull one over on her?
"Want to leave?" Jennifer asked with a playful tone.
The girls hastily nodded.
"So, how did the cake end up on the floor?" Jennifer’s clear, bright eyes scanned them one by one.
None of the girls dared to admit that Cherry had purposefully smeared the cake. Instead, they lied, claiming that they hadn’t noticed.
"Oh, then stay put until you come clean," Jennifer said.
"Jennifer," Cherry started.
Jennifer cut her off coldly, "Stop. I don’t want to hear you speak."
Cherry immediately fell silent.
After a while, Cynthia arrived. She had left her house in such a hurry that she hadn’t even properly dressed herself.
Upon exiting her car, she hurried into the restaurant. She was slightly panting, but upon seeing Jennifer, she put on a friendly smile.
"Jennifer, really sorry to keep you waiting," Cynthia approached Jennifer and glanced at Rosemary. "This must be your daughter-in-law. She’s so beautiful and seems very well-behaved and smart."
Turning back to her own daughter among the crowd, she called out, "Where’s my good-for-nothing daughter? Cherry! Come here and apologize right now!"
"Don’t scold her," Jennifer, sitting gracefully with an air of elegance, said with a hint of amusement. "She claimed earlier that she doesn’t care about anyone’s feelings. She’s out to offend my daughter-in-law today."
"This brat, saying such nonsense," Cynthia laughed in disbelief, swiftly walking over to pull her daughter to Jennifer. "Apologize to Mrs. McMillian and her daughter-in-law right now!"
"Mom, you haven’t even heard the whole story yet, and you want me to apologize to them." Cherry felt wronged.
"You slandered them and even wanted to hit them, and you think you shouldn’t apologize?" Cynthia angrily smacked her arm and said, "Apologize now!"
"I’m sorry."
"Did you skip lunch? Speak up!" Cynthia was clearly displeased with her daughter’s volume.
"I’m sorry."
"Who are you speaking to!" Cynthia smacked her arm again. "You need to address them by name!"
Cherry was clearly embarrassed. "Mom! My classmates are watching."
"You weren’t afraid of being seen when you made a fool of yourself just now. What are you afraid of now? Apologize properly!"
Cherry was infuriated but knew her mother’s temperament and how important the McMillian family was to them. Cynthia was a fair person. If Jennifer so much as gave a hint, Cynthia would surely make Cherry’s life miserable.
With that in mind, she swallowed her pride and apologized, saying, "I’m sorry, Jennifer. I’m sorry, Rosemary."
"And what are you apologizing for?" Jennifer lifted her gaze, looking at her coldly. "Are you apologizing for calling my daughter-in-law names, or for slandering her, or maybe, for trying to hit her?"
Cynthia nearly fainted when she heard that. Her daughter had actually called Jennifer’s daughter-in-law names!
"Mrs. McMillian is asking you something, answer her! You dare to curse the girl? You’re so stupid! Don’t you realize that it’s thanks to the McMillian family that the Evert family is what it is today!"
Cherry was severely reprimanded by her mother and had to apologize sincerely, swallowing her pride.
"Last time at the club, I saw with my own eyes that your daughter picked a fight with my daughter-in-law, and then two days later, here she is again, under my nose, picking on my daughter-in-law. Are the McMillians just easy targets? Even a kid can mess with us?"
Cynthia hadn’t expected the club incident to come up and then gave her daughter a harsh slap on the shoulder. "Why are you always causing trouble?"
"I’m truly sorry, Jennifer. I’ve failed in disciplining my daughter," Cynthia bowed in apology, turning to Rosemary, bending a full 90 degrees, and sincerely said, "I’m really sorry. I haven’t raised Cherry properly, but I promise you we’ll work on it. It won’t happen again."
"Mrs. Evert, you’re not the one who did wrong. There’s no need for you to apologize on behalf of her," Rosemary’s voice was cold and clear, without any hint of taking advantage of the McMillian’s influence.
Cynthia noticed that Rosemary’s character matched Jennifer’s well, as if she was born into the McMillian family. They truly seemed like mother and daughter.
"You’re kind and understanding. It’s all Cherry’s fault. She’s been spoiled rotten by us."
As Cynthia said that, she turned to her daughter and curiously asked her, "What happened to the cake earlier?"
Cherry didn’t expect her mother to ask that and was at a loss for words.
Cynthia’s tone turned fiercer. "If the CCTV can’t find it, I have my ways. Better tell the truth, or I’ll skin you alive!"
Cherry was frightened and finally mumbled with her head lowered, "I knocked it over myself."
Cynthia was furious and asked, "With what? How did you do it?"
"I was angry about the country club incident, so when I saw her passing by, I knocked the cupcake over with my elbow."
Cynthia then gave her a hard slap across the face.
Cherry was stunned, looking at her mother in disbelief.
"Is this how I have raised you all these years? You can dislike someone, avoid them, not befriend them, but you absolutely cannot harm them! Today, not only did you try to harm someone, but you also did it through despicable means! How could you turn out this way? At eighteen, you’re an adult, yet you’re doing these irrational things!"
Cherry was scared by her mother’s anger and started crying.
"Foolish! Anyone would think this is the Evert family’s usual behavior!" Cynthia made her apologize again.
This time, Cherry couldn’t brush it off and apologized sincerely.
"What about you guys?" Jennifer angrily looked at Cherry’s friends.
The girls were terrified and hurriedly apologized.
"We’re sorry, Jennifer. Sorry, Rosemary. We did see Cherry knock the cupcake over but didn’t stand up for Rosemary. That was wrong of us."
"It’s all my fault. Please give me another chance."
"We’re sorry, truly sorry."
Seeing how scared they were, Rosemary and Jennifer decided to let it go and went upstairs for afternoon tea.
Cynthia quickly arranged with the restaurant manager to have a tab, meaning that any expenses incurred by the McMillians or Rosemary in the restaurant would be charged to the Everts.
After that, she dragged Cherry home for a stern lecture.
