Chapter 390: Chapter 390 ESE event (2)
Chloe nodded frantically, her eyes wide. "Yes! I want to fall in love like in the movies!" she confessed, earning an affectionate laugh from the audience.
Lilith smiled so beautifully that the entire hall seemed to hold its breath. She leaned down a little closer, whispering so only Chloe and the mic would catch it:
"Then I hope your story gives you a beautiful ending, hmm?"
Chloe beamed, her eyes glittering.
Behind them, the screen lit up with the first lines of the short script. The audience leaned in, eager to see what ESE’s magic would do.
Chloe sat down carefully on the soft white sofa at the center of the stage. The plush cushions looked huge around her petite figure. She kept her hands on her knees, her eyes wide as a staff member gently adjusted the sleek headset over her hair.
From the audience, there was a low murmur — the curious, expectant kind parents nudged each other, people lifted their phones higher to capture this moment that felt like magic about to bloom.
Lilith stood by Chloe’s side, her slender fingers brushing the little girl’s shoulder for reassurance. "Don’t be afraid," she said, her voice calm and warm, sinking right under Chloe’s skin like sunlight. The girl’s shoulders dropped. She breathed out a shaky giggle, her hands unclenched.
Lilith walked gracefully to the sleek laptop set on a tall stand nearby. Her heels clicked on the polished stage floor as she checked a few settings, her face bathed in the soft glow of the screen.
Then, she raised her chin, her eyes finding Chloe’s small figure under the spotlight.
"Are you ready, Chloe?" she asked, her tone carrying gently across the hushed hall.
Chloe nodded, her voice tiny but brave. "Yes."
With a light press of her finger, Lilith launched the story.
At once, the massive screen behind Chloe flickered to life — a swirl of soft pastel colors, the ESE logo glowing like a heartbeat. The entire hall dimmed, the last house lights fading until only the gentle glow of the projection touched Chloe’s face.
In the screen, they could all see exactly what Chloe was seeing — a little world inside the headset. A simple five-minute love story, crafted with soft edges and warm moments, like pages of a child’s diary.
It began sweetly. A little girl with messy hair and a shy smile, watching her first crush from afar. Her small heart thumped every time he looked her way. The audience could see Chloe’s tiny fingers curl and relax on her lap, her heartbeat appearing as a soft line at the edge of the screen. ESE read every flicker, every flutter.
The boy gave the girl flowers, awkward and bright. He laughed with her under the schoolyard tree. Chloe’s lips curved into a trembling smile behind the headset — the audience could see her real emotion layered with the animated scenes.
And then — the boy vanished. The screen flickered to a rainy scene, shadows drifting in. The words "He’s gone..." floated across. Chloe’s eyes widened — her small chest rose, a tiny shiver of sadness blooming on her face. ESE caught that heartbreak and shifted the story instantly.
On the big screen, the little girl waited by the old tree every day, her hair longer, her eyes searching. The soft line at the edge of the screen dipped and rose — Chloe’s tiny fear of lost love, her innocent ache. The ending shifted once again. The scene brightened — the little girl planted flowers where the boy once gave her daisies, a small smile on her face, but no one stood beside her.
The final line glowed like a sigh: "And so, she loved — but never again the same."
A hush fell across the room. They hadn’t expected a child’s emotion to carve such a bittersweet ending.
When the headset lifted from Chloe’s head, a single tear shimmered at the corner of her eye, but her small smile was brave.
Lilith stepped forward again, her heart soft as she bent down and cupped Chloe’s cheeks. "Thank you, sweetheart," she whispered, gently brushing the tear away with her thumb. "That was your story and only yours."
The entire audience broke into gentle applause, touched and awed.
The soft applause for Chloe still lingered in the hall like the aftertaste of something sweet and sad. Chloe stepped down from the stage, her eyes sparkling despite that lone tear.
Lilith turned back to the audience, her red lips curved into a small, knowing smile. She held the mic lightly, her eyes sweeping over the sea of people —
"So..." Lilith’s voice was smooth and warm, echoing through the dim hall, "who wants to test their heart next?"
Laughter and soft chatter bubbled up as more people raised their hands. Some waved shyly, some bounced in their seats. Everyone suddenly wanting to feel what Chloe just felt.
Lilith let her eyes roam, searching for just the right one and then she pointed with the smallest tilt of her chin.
"You there. Sir, in the black suit — yes, you. Would you like to try?"
The man looked startled, a little embarrassed by the attention, but he stood up anyway, fixing his tie nervously. He climbed the steps, the spotlight catching the slight sweat on his forehead. The staff guided him to sit on the same soft sofa where Chloe had sat just minutes before.
The headset was placed on his head, the sensors gently adjusted by careful hands. The large screen flickered once more, that gentle swirl of pastel colors and the glowing ESE logo returning like a heartbeat.
Lilith leaned down beside him, her hand resting on the edge of the sofa. Her eyes locked with his, kind but unreadable. "Are you ready?" she asked, her voice softer now.
"Yes," he said, his voice a bit shaky — a grown man suddenly feeling like a child waiting for a bedtime story.
The hall hushed again. The lights dimmed, the projector flared, and the same simple love story began to play inside his headset — the same first crush, the same old tree, the same moment when love blossoms. But this time... his emotions painted a different ending.
