"It was just a moment of impulse. Why do you have to take it seriously?" Nyx looked everywhere else but his eyes.

Finn tightened his grip on her wrist, his expression unreadable, but his eyes burned with something she couldn’t quite place. Something more than just lust.

"A moment of impulse you say?" He echoed, his voice low and dangerous.

Nyx forced herself to meet his gaze, masking the turmoil within her. Of all the six times she had died and revived, not a moment had she and Finn ever gotten this intimate. They were always at loggerheads. Never once had he ever shown an ounce of interest in her. Thus, she had to pretend to hate him. That was not all. He had once casually said he could never love anyone, especially her. Reason, all the witches who had ever been an aid to them ended up being traitors. One of them were Nyx’s sisters.

At that time, Nyx knew he could she already liked him, and it felt as if he was saying all that on purpose to push her away. Relentlessly, she tried to convey her feelings through her actions, but all she got was a cold shoulder. He started fooling around with different women, showing off in front of her, until she could not take it anymore.

She focused her life on working for Alaric and never paid attention to him again. Experiencing life and death. She even got trapped in a freezing spell for almost a century and a half and got rescued by the Nightveil brothers at a time when they needed dire help from her. Her five lifetimes became theirs, until now. She asked Alaric for ten years of freedom, and he granted her. This time, she swore to live for herself and not for anyone. Do what she wanted and, if possible, be with someone who would sincerely live her.

But fate did not give her that chance and decided to play a dirty game on her. Pushing her directly into the arms of the person she wanted to avoid the most.

Recalling a painful past, Nyx exhaled sharply, shaking her head. "Yes. It meant nothing, Finn. We got carried away, that’s all."

His jaw clenched, and his hold on her further tightened for a split second before he let out an exhale and released her.

Nyx should have felt relieved, but the way he looked at her, like she had just slapped him, made her chest tighten.

"So, that’s it?" Finn’s voice was weirdly calm. "You act like nothing happened and avoid me like plague? Huh?"

Nyx crossed her arms, trying to regain control of the situation. "We are both adults, Finn and one-night-stand isn’t uncommon, right?"

Finn let out a humourless chuckle, shaking his head. "Is that it?"

Nyx sucked in a breath, ignoring the feeling surging in her heart rapidly. "Yes. Desire isn’t the same as..."

"Don’t," Finn cut her off, stepping closer, caging her against the door once more. "Don’t stand there and lie to me, Nyx. Not after that night."

"I’m not lying," She said, but even she could hear the slight waver in her voice.

Finn scoffed. "You don’t run away from something that means nothing. So, tell me, what are you really afraid off?"

Her throat tightened. What was she supposed to say? The fear and pain he had inflicted on her was too big to wipe off with just some words. Yes, she was scared to live him. What if he hurt her again? What if he played her heart and crush the little hope she was holding onto? Rather letting him crumble her into nothing, she would rather spend the rest of her life hiding from him. If her peace was worth his absence, then she would rather be self-centered this time.

Funn studied her, his intense gaze searching for cracks in her defense. "Is it because you felt something real? Because I sure as he’ll did."

Nyx froze. No, no, no. Thus was not part of her plan. It was not supposed to happen. She was not supposed to flinch under his gaze let alone feel anything.

She pushed his chest, but this time, he didn’t let go. Instead, he cupped her chin, tilting her face so she could meet his gaze.

"Say it again," Finn murmured. "Say it meant nothing while looking me in the eye."

Nyx opened her mouth but the words wouldn’t come out.

Finn smirked, there was no amusement in it. "Thought so."

His grip loosened, his fingers brushing against her jaw as he stepped back.

"You can keep running, Nyx, but I’ll tell you this..." He leaned close, his hot breath against her ear. "I always gey what I want, and I want you."

Nyx was infuriated. Not just by him but also her little self control.

"Then you should have though about that centuries ago , before you decided what I was worth." Something flashed in her eyes, anger, frustration and hate towards herself. Why did she have to be this weak?

"You don’t get to chase after me, Finn. It’s too late. Not when I know exactly what you think of witches." She added. "You are right. I did want you that night. But that’s all it was."

Finn’s expression became unreadable. "And what exactly do you think I think of you?"

Nyx’s lips curled into a cold smirk, though inside, she felt like giving up. "I think I was just an exception of the night. Just something forbidden for you to sink your fangs into."

"You really believe that?" He asked, his voice barely a whisper.

Nyx took a step closer, the distance between them almost none, her hands resting on his chest, before she pushed him back, hard enough to make him stumble slightly.

"Yes. I’m just a witch who got lucky. After all, Mr. Nightveil is not short of women, right?"

She did not wait for his answers and passed through him but before she could away, he caught her hand. Instinctively, Nyx used her other hand and sent him flying, crushing his back to the door.

"Careful where you put your hands." She rephrased his words that he had said to Alex back in Hong Kong. It was time for him to taste his own medicine. "Do lock the door on your way out." She added and disappeared into the bathroom.
