Chapter 72: Internal Turmoil

Alaric’s P.O.V

The sun shone its first rays, casting shadows against the wall. I sat on a two sitter couch in my room, one leg crossed over the other, fingers idly tracing the edge of a silver ring on my thumb. The weight of what I had just learned pressed against my chest, but my face remained impassive and unreadable.

I had spent centuries mastering this art of control. Emotions were dangerous. They blinded even the wisest man and made men weak. And weakness had no place in my world.

The water from the bathroom continued to run. Ravenna was still inside. I had questions. A lot of them and desperately needed answers.

’Why?’

That was the question no one could answer. If she had truly trusted me, why didn’t she ever say a word? What had she feared? Had she thought I would stop? She had kept her secret so well even I, who once knew her better than anyone, was left in the dark. And now, after four centuries of believing she was gone, I learned all the sacrifices she had made. But had she ever thought about me? What pain would she leave me in? Spent years, killing all my enemies, thinking they were behind what happened and made history of being the most ruthless and bloodthirsty Vampire King to ever exist. It was after annihilating almost half of the werewolves, witches, and even human race. I had gone berserk with no sense of consciousness left in me. Shedding blood was all I wanted. It gave me satisfaction but could never erase the fact that Astrid was gone. Until three poweful witches were summoned, the Ashen sisters, and managed to erase her image. Pain lessened, but a hollow was left in my heart that could never be filled by anyone until this untamed girl came along. Slowly found her way into my heart only to realize she was the same person.

I forced my grip to loosen before I crushed the ring between my fingers.

The bathroom door creaked open. I glanced up, my expression shifting effortlessly. Not face, not forced but composed. My eyes softened just enough to avoid suspicion.

Ravenna stepped, wearing a silk robe. I watched her movements as she dried her hair while walking towards the mirror. It seemed she was yet to notice my presence. For a normal werewolf, she would have sensed the moment I got into the room, but her power seemed to only work at certain times.

It was only after she was done combing her hair that she turned and saw me watching her intently.

"You are back?" She mused before making her way towards me.

"Hmm," I hummed in response, with a slight smirk. "You are early? I don’t remember you being a morning person."

She rolled her eyes, tossing the towel on hand on the couch. "I didn’t have much of a choice. You left the bed before sunrise and stirred me awake. I tried going back to sleep but couldn’t."

I chuckled and stood up, closing the distance between us. "You might want to get dressed." My eyes lingered on her exposed cleavage.

"You pervert! Didn’t you have enough last night?" As expected, she cursed angrily.

Tracing her bare neck, I seductively murmured, "If I didn’t, will you allow me to..." I was yet to finish my statement, and she had disappeared into the walk-in closet.

After leaving Alaric’s study, Finn remained in the mansion, unlike Zander, who left almost immediately. He was looking for a certain someone who had been avoiding him like plague after night in Lún Huí Club.

He followed her scent and saw slipping into a room, her movements quick as if she sensed him nearby. Being a vampire, her speed was nothing compared to his, and so he followed, pushing the door just enough to slip inside before it fully shut.

Nyx, caught by surprise, barely had time to react before the door clicked closed, and she was pinned on it.

"Are you planning to avoid me forever?" Finn’s voice was calm, but there was underlying sharpness.

Nyx stiffened for a moment before exhaling dramatically. "Took you a whole day to understand." She stated lazily.

Finn let out a humourless chuckle and pinned her hands above her head. He leaned over, nearly brushing his lips on hers, but stopped and went for her ear instead.

"No one nails and bails on me." His frustration was visible.

ONE DAY AGO.

After dragging Nyx out of the club, he drove off with her without an explanation nor a destination.

Nyx remained silent, but her sharp gaze never left him. She was curious as to why and almost wanted to ask if he was jealous. His warning to Alex and that dead glare he gave, she was almost convinced he was jealous.

"What?" Finn irritated voice filled her ears.

"What’s with you? Why are you mad?" She asked, smirking, a slight hope printed in her eyes.

Finn gritted his teeth and briefly glanced at her, hitting the acceleration. His hands gripped tight on the steer, as if he wanted to crush it.

Nyx sighed, defeatedly, and cursed herself for even daring to think about it. This man would never love her. As for why he was angry, probably it was something else. Maybe because she had aided Ravenna in escaping.

"Take me back," She added coldly, then closed her eyes and leaned her head on the seat.

Finn’s mood worsened, and after a few minutes of driving, he hit the break. "Get out!" He exclaimed, but there was no answer. He glanced at her only to find she had fallen asleep. He raised his hand to wake her but decided against it.

He walked out and carried her out of the car, then walked inside Lún Huí, directly to the lift, and stopped at the VIP floor. He marched directly to a particular room.

Half an hour later, Finn walked out of the bathroom with only a towel wrapped around his waist, and the sight of Nyx tiptoeing to the door graced him.

"Where do you think you are going?" His voice made her freeze as he found his way to her.

"Back to my room," Nyx replied after a moment of hesitation.

Finn stopped behind her, before leaving on her shoulder, resting his chin on it. "And you think I’ll let you go?"
