Destroy My Life In You
Chapter 38: Awake

Chapter 38: Awake

I was surrounded by darkness unable to tell what was in front of me. I tried opening my eyes, but something seemed to be holding me back. I could not move because my whole body was in pain. Letting out a grunt, I tried to recollect what had happened and there came flashes of the accident Alaric and I were involved in. As if struck by lightning, I tried to open my eyes harder and move myself from wherever I was. But then, I heard that familiar voice.

"Why hasn’t she woken up yet?" It was Alaric, and from what I could hear, he was scolding someone. Huh! Even on death bed he never stops with his bossy mood. "You said she’ll be fine by morning and..."

"Always...angry." I murmured in a pretty low hoarse voice, feeling my throat burning.

Gradually, my eyes opened to the light and the white ceilings of the place which probably was a hospital considering I had been in an accident. It only took a few seconds to adjust to the brightness, and when everything was clearer, then did I see those pair of dark eyes scrutinizing my face without a blink. Rolling my eyes, I faced the other side. I had to or else he would have seen my eyes that were already tearing a little bit due to relief. Relief that he was fine.

"Can’t face me now? Are you already feeling guilty or what?" His voice broke my reverie and I let out soft and low sniffs before looking at him, briefly, then faced the other said again.

"Am just sad you aren’t dead yet." I bit my lip and smacked my head inwardly, feeling stupid because of my own words. I wanted to tell him how relieved I was. That every bit I looked at him I felt like crying and jumping on him just to show him how much his safety meant to me. "I’m hopelessly in love." I murmured to myself unaware I was talking loud enough for him to hear.

"You wish death for the man you hopelessly love? How romantic." His sarcastic voice made me realize my mistake but still did not relent.

"And who said you are the man I love?" I retorted feeling my heart taking a leap aware it only beat for him and him only.

I was about to compose myself when I felt Alaric lean closer to me, and placed his hands on the sides of the hospital bed locking me in between. He had this sinister smile that sent shivers down my spine, which made me want to escape from his cage. Before I could even ask what was happening, he lifted his right hand and placed it lightly above the left side of my chest. "Your heart," then touched my lips, "Your lips," then travelled down to my neck tracing it up and down, making me freeze, "And your body. They scream how much you love me."

Silence took over as we got lost in each other’s gaze, and only came back when someone cleared their throat behind us.

"Mr. Nightveil, I would like to check on the patient." The doctor, probably the one whom Alaric was shouting at earlier, spoke up facing down.

From his red face, I could guess he had seen all that. A blush crept on my face as well before glaring at Alaric who had stepped aside to give way to the doctor.

"How do you feel?" The doctor added checking out some things I could barely understand.

"Apart from the splitting headache, I feel okay." I replied honestly, which made me also think how that could be possible. How come I had no serious injury comparing the accident we had? Not only that, Alaric seemed like nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing had happened to him. No scars on the face or any bandages. "Are we dead already?" I asked subconsciously staring at Alaric.

"Stay quiet and let the doctor do his work." Alaric brushed me off and even though I did oblige, my mind was still not settled wondering how we survived.

"Do you recollect anything about your lost memories?"

I frowned at that question and shook my head saying, "Not really. Though I do feel as if I remembered something but am not sure what it is." I tapped my forehead lightly with knuckles trying as much to recall what I was forgetting.

"Don’t stress if you don’t remember. It might be harmful to your health." The doctor said and I nodded in agreement, but I still could not shake off that feeling of forgetting something important. "For now, you need to rest well and take your medication. If by tomorrow there’s improvement then you’ll be discharged."

The doctor left after a few instructions, and now only Alaric and I were left in the room. "Where were we?" I asked boldly, sitting in a comfortable position. "Come here, I have something I want to ask you." I patted the space beside me and surprisingly, Alaric sat down, though I could feel his mood had drastically changed.

"Who are you?" His question came before I could even ask what I wanted.

"Who am I? You don’t remember me? ...Oh no! Don’t tell me you have amnesia and I’ll have to reintroduce myself, make you fall in love with me again..."

"Ravenna!" That got me. Him calling my name meant he was being serious and was not suffering from amnesia either.

"Okay, I’ll stop it. But what do you mean by asking who I am?" I narrowed my eyes thoughtfully. "Or is it part-time amnesia? Forgetting me in one minute and then... Is there even something like..."

"Ravenna!" This time his voice sounded angry and he did scare me with that look he was giving me, as if he would tear me down any moment if I uttered another word.

After a moment of silence, I felt him hold my hand and raised my dropped head by my chin, making me look into his eyes. "What is it that you remembered about your past?"

So that was what he meant when he asked who I was? I scoffed inwardly wondering why he could not have asked that before instead of being moody and grumpy like a woman on her periods. Pft! If he could hear my thoughts, he would chop me into small pieces and feed me to the wolves. I sighed inwardly thankful he at least could not read minds.

"I don’t." I tried hard but all I could see were vague images of a girl in white crying, and nothing else. "I really don’t remember."

"Are you sure?" I could clearly see the doubt in his eyes but nevertheless, I nodded honestly. "If I find out you are lying..." He did not complete the statement leaving me to think of what he would do to me.

"Will you kill me?" And my heart broke once again listening to his threats that I knew were not just mere words. He was a man who stood by his word.

"I’ll do worse." He replied before pulling me closer by the chin, and planted a soft peck on my lips, taking me by surprise. "So now, I want to hear you repeat what you said before you blacked out in the car."
