Chapter 65: Caretaker
Chapter 65: Caretaker
The entire place came to life with the sound of shoes stomping the floor and students giving each other instructions as they made their way to the large black door.
"Walk faster Damien, I’m sleepy," Alicia mumbled, hands in pockets as she pushed past the students in blue covering the door.
"The fuck are you pushing at you idiot!" One of them hissed at her but stopped when Alicia glared at her, her grey eyes glistening with bloodlust evident to even Damien who was minding his business. Then she released her aura, stretched her hand among them, and pushed the lot of them to the side as if they were side characters in a movie and she was the main character.
"Damien," Alicia called for him, gesturing with her head at the space she’d opened by the crowded door.
The boy didn’t waste any more time and immediately walked through the space choking a little on his guide’s aura as he reached the other end of the door—a dimly lit two-way corridor, but Alicia didn’t let the boys she was holding off close the gap she’d opened just yet.
"Walk faster Donald!" She yelled at the beefy nerd who looked as though he was pleading with Eden over something.
It looked as though Alicia’s call made him reach his limit because he suddenly grabbed the princess’s wrist and pulled her along until they passed by the open space. Right behind them was Ambrose and her guide—a girl just as quiet and intimidating as her.
Alicia was about to set free the students she was squeezing behind her when Yong called out for her to wait after squeezing past the students squashing him and his guide.
"Why should I?" Alicia replied, about to walk away.
"He’s my friend!" Damien found himself yelling before she did.
"Oh is it? No wonder you guys had such an eventful beginning in the stadium," Alicia mumbled, yawning. "Well what are you waiting for?"
She didn’t have to voice herself twice before Yong and his guide walked through the opening she had made for them. Finally, she reduced her aura and let go of the boys who took in collective united breaths after she walked past the door.
"Now off we trot! Might as well be the leader of this tiny group since I saved your asses from getting squashed," she hissed at the group following behind her into the blue-red coded corridor.
"But...isn’t what you just did classified as bullying?" Damien asked as he walked next to Alicia, his footsteps echoing in the corridor along with the others as they made their way to the dorms.
"Depends on how you look at it. I like to think of it as survival of the fittest, I mean, if I hadn’t intimidated them into opening a space for us, we’d be still stuck in the assembly hall wouldn’t we?"
"Right, but still—"
"Bullying is unintentional, Damien. It’s done by idiots seeking to validate themselves against those who give them an itch but are under the survival hierarchy right below the bully somehow. What she did was simply use her power to create an opening for herself and us, she didn’t direct her energy towards one student in particular," Ambrose interjected, her blonde her swerving to the side with each step she took.
"The least you can do is show your gratitude, or, if like the majority of men out there you don’t have the slightest bit of heart in you—you could just shut your pie hole!" She hissed the last part through gritted teeth.
Damien simply nodded at her and apologized.
"Finally, a smart first year. Come to my room if you need assistance hun," Alicia beamed at Ambrose who was walking hand in hand with Eden like sisters.
"Are you sure? I’ll bother you even at noon."
"A wolf never really sleeps darling," Alicia replied coming to a halt as they reached a circular corridor that intersected with the small one they’d been walking through.
A lot of students from Clawthorn’s Cardinal who had left a while ago were fixated on the walls.
"Waiting for the corridor to do the work for you I see," Donald addressed them, his voice full of disapproval.
"Not exactly. It’s Rohan’s fault. He won’t let us pass because he just wiped the floors."
"Ugh!" Alicia groaned in dismay, pulling her hands out of the pockets. "Where’s that caretaker at?"
Just then, the irritating sound of stone brushing on stone filled Damien’s ears and her closed them, wincing as the walls before him and the others moved. He wasn’t the only one who found the sound irritating—all first years had closed their ears. As for the seniors, they simply stood there, unaffected by it as though they were already used to the sound.
"There he is," one of the seniors from Clawthorn’s cardinal pointed at the man mopping the corridor.
Damien flinched when he flicked his head in their direction. Red eyes stared at the students, and his face was tattooed all over, leaving for the front, and like Damien, his fangs were in the show—though Damien was sure that unlike him, he had mastered the art of restoring his teeth to their normal state.
"He looks like a thug," Yong whimpered next to Damien, and Damien couldn’t help but agree with him.
It it wasn’t for the pink outfit he was wearing, the boy was sure some of the first years would have pissed their pants by now.
"Rohan!"
"If it isn’t Alicia the great," the vampire grinned at her.
"Your highness demands that you let her pass through immediately," Alicia barked out the command as if she were talking to one of her lowly servants, already walking towards yet another two-way corridor with one entrance that Rohan was cleaning.
"Will you have a duel with me this weekend if I agree?"
"As long as you don’t chicken out," Alicia replied, stepping before him and outstretched her hand. "You know what to do."
Rohan immediately placed his hand on top of her’s until they were touching each other’s wrists. "I declare a match against Alicia Dice this weekend," the man said with a smirk.
"And I agree to it." Immediately after Alicia’s consent, a massive amount of aura emitted from the entrance as the two of them glared at each other before a loud voice that sounded as though it was a fairy’s echoed from the walls saying:
"Confirmed. A one-on-one match between Alicia Dice vs Rohan Dragonblade to take place this weekend."
Some of the first years gasped in shock at Alicia’s audacity, Yong mixed in with them—but Damien found her daring attitude quite inspiring.
’I wanna be that level of strong too,’ he thought to himself.
Finally, Rohan moved away from the entrance and let Alicia and the rest of the students pass through, each cardinal walking into a corridor with marks similar to their uniform colors in it. However, when Damien’s turn to enter the corridor came after he had let the girls pass, Rohan suddenly gripped the boy’s shoulder and stopped him.
"Hold it right there, boy," his voice came out sounding more like a warning, and Damien immediately paused, wondering what the fuck he’d done wrong now.
