Descendants of Gibbous
Chapter 56: Catcall

Chapter 56: Catcall

"Woah!" Damien screeched when they suddenly popped into a wooden shop, falling to the ground with a loud thud that made the wooden mannequin beside him shake.

"Flappy is that you?" Came an old man’s voice from somewhere in the building.

"Aye sir," replied the little man, leaving Damien and his companions behind as he headed in the voice’s direction.

Damien forced himself to stand, embarrassed he was the only one who fell. The other three had landed gracefully on their feet like cats and were already busying themselves around the fashion pieces filling the shop, not in the least looking sick like Damien was.

He now knew there were a lot of ways to use portals in Gibbous, but every time he tried a different way—it still surprised him. The one they had used just now felt an awful lot like he was being pulled at high speeds through a cylinder tube against his will. Alas, he had no one to complain to. Ahara had stopped checking up on him in public since he told her off a few weeks ago—something Damien still felt guilty about from time to time.

Focusing his eyes around the shop they had entered, Damien wasn’t surprised to see that it was yet another large fancy rich people’s business located somewhere in Vespera’s hidden street corners—although, this one looked a lot more private considering how it was almost empty—leave for the five who just entered, the old man’s voice and a woman dressed in vintage clothing who was about to leave the shop.

A twinkling bell rang somewhere in the building as the doors opened for her, drawing Damien’s attention to the golden letters plastered by the glass walls where mannequins wearing Gibforge’s uniforms and some other modern fashions were displayed. It read:

SIR FOPPY’s FASHIONS AND UNIFORMS. EST 856 B.C. A mannequin was holding that sign up.

As for the interior, it was very neat and sparkly—not like the pearly walls at the bank in the Draconic region, but it was almost the same. The white ceramic on the floor had hints of sky blue in it and so did the ceiling.

’It’s bewitched,’ Damien thought when he saw how despite it showing the clear blue sky, twinkling stars were still reflecting on it.

It made Damien feel strange—like he had entered restricted property made exclusively for a selected few. He rubbed the back of his neck uncomfortably, walking towards Ahara who was now pulling a white summer dress and asking Eden what she thought of it.

"Hey, umm, are you sure we should be doing this without that small guy’s guidance?" The boy asked his sister.

However, before Ahara could reply to him, the dwarf appeared from behind the mannequin wearing the dress Ahara was holding, his round nose scrunched up a little.

"Who are you calling little?" He growled.

"Now, now, flappy; don’t scare our clients away when you’re the one who brought them here," came the old man’s voice from somewhere down the room, rebuking the dwarf. "Why don’t you bring them here instead so I can assist them on time."

Flappy looked like had more words for Damien, but he swallowed them and turned around, gesturing for them to follow him down the small corridor formed by lines of mannequins dressed in different clothing. As they were walking through, Damien’s coat suddenly hooked on one of the dresses with metal hooks for designs.

’Who the fuck uses pointed metal on a dress that’s supposed to be worn?’ He groaned in his head, lowering himself to remove the entanglement.

However, before he could touch the dress, the mannequin wearing it reached the entanglement first and completed the task for him at the expanse of the boy’s heart almost cracking his chest from the shock he experienced in that moment.

"Argh!"

"What is it?!" Ahara asked, the motherly instinct she had been suppressing for days now finally showing as she rushed in her brother’s direction.

Eden gasped and clutched her chest all whilst Kingston who had seen everything snorted and walked away from the siblings, needing a hearty laugh without offending Ahara anymore than he had already done.

"The mannequin moved!" Damien shrieked, pointing at it.

Ahara blinked at him. "That’s it?"

Damien could feel his cheeks burn at her question. Of course, she’d ask him that; he had seen a large phoenix statue move for goodness sake and yet here he was screaming because a mannequin did the same.

"Tsk, coward," the dwarf hissed, glaring at Damien from the corner of his eye.

’Yeah, I deserve that.’

In no time, they were all clustered in the building’s secluded corner make-do office where an old man dressed in the fanciest of suits Damien was yet to see in Gibbous was taking his and Eden’s body measurements for their school uniforms.

"Listen you two, I don’t think we’ll be able to finish shopping on time if we all stand here watching you get uniforms, so how about I go and buy your books whilst you two get your school uniforms and gym wear sorted here?" Ahara asked the teens, checking the time on her watch.

"I think that’s a good idea. By the time you come back, I’ll be done handing them their clothes," the old tailor told Ahara, giving her a gentle business smile before turning back to Damien. "Please turn around."

Damien turned around just like Sir. Foppy had asked before replying to his sister:

"Fine by me, but take Kingston with you."

"I was planning on doing that anyway. How else am I supposed to carry all your books and potions by myself," she notified her brother before turning to Eden.

"Will it be okay with you if I step out for a moment?"

Eden nodded at her, pointing at the guards who had stationery themselves outside the shop a few seconds after Eden vanished from their sight.

"Don’t worry, those guys will protect me if something happens."

"Sweet. We’ll be back in less than thirty minutes, I promise," Ahara replied before turning on her heel with Kingston right behind her like a guard; just when the dwarf decided to appear from the mannequins with Eden’s school uniform.

"Here you go, princess. Go and try them in the changing room over there," he handed her the blood-red clothes.

"Thanks, Flappy," Eden accepted them before heading in the changing room’s direction.

It took a few more seconds for the tailor to finish Damien’s measurements and once he was done, he gave his little assistant the paper he had been scribbling them on.

"You know where to get his uniform. I’ll be in the gym wear section if you need me."

"Aye," the dwarf replied before the two of them vanished in different directions, leaving Damien to sit on the comfortable purple chair behind the office curtain alone—but not for long.

It was then that he heard Eden catcalling him.

"Ptss, Damien," she whisper shouted, peeking from the changing room.

"What?" Damien whispered back, wondering if she was getting any crazy ideas again. He thought he had left Lucy in the human world, but it seemed he had found her twin here in Gibbous as well.

"Can you come here, I need your help."

Damien froze. Help? Wasn’t she supposed to be changing?

"What kind of help?" Damien whispered at her, brows furrowed.

Eden bit her lip and glanced at her surroundings again. When she was sure the coast was clear, she glanced in Damien’s direction, her face now beet red.

"My zipper’s stuck!"
