Chapter 772: Chapter 618: The Path to the West…_2
“Do you have anything to say about our methods?”
Roger lowered his head to look at the liquid in the cup.
“Everything is for survival; you all have your reasons that compel you to act.”
As for the choices of the Sword Pavilion, Roger did not believe he had any right to comment.
“Survival, indeed, it’s all about survival.”
“So many years of inheritance have come down, and too many things have happened on Qinglu Mountain; this is not the first time…”
Sword Master Funiu’s eyes flickered, as if he recalled something.
At that moment, Roger noticed a faint glow flitting across several pillars around the great hall; the area they were in was sealed off.
Neither sound nor sight would be transmitted out.
In the core region of Funiu Sword Pavilion, by the side of a Sword Master, this was enough to indicate that what Sword Master Funiu was about to say was of paramount importance.
“The inheritance of the Sword Pavilion has always been problematic; these years it was merely enough to struggle along, and since Sword Master Cold Crow did not speak, it means he has left the decision to me.”
“There’s nothing to hide, after all, you come from the West, you will understand our actions and choices more easily than other cultivators.”
“On Qinglu Mountain, there has never been a Sword Master, not even one!”
Roger raised his head, looking at Sword Master Funiu with a face full of surprise.
He could not mistake the feeling; this man’s strength was indeed that of a Sword Master.
“You heard me right, from the beginning until now, there has never been a true Sword Master level cultivator in Funiu Sword Pavilion.”
“Our way of inheritance is unconventional, existing attached to bloodlines, and the latter part of the Fourth Tier is our limit.”
“The most crucial step we simply cannot take.”
“Then your power?”
Roger could not help but ask.
“In the West, there are many ways to enhance the power of a Transcendent.”
Moved by an idea, Roger blurted out.
“Cursed items?!”
“These are considered the Sacred Relics of the Atlas heritage, it is relying on these that we have barely maintained Sword Master level combat prowess and aura in the latter phase of the Fourth Tier.”
“Among all of us, only my combat power is equivalent to that of a Sword Master, the other three are merely shells; if truly put to battle, they could only unleash a few Sword Master level attacks.”
Sword Master Funiu’s news was incredibly explosive, but after giving it some careful thought, Roger had also figured out the reason why they could keep it hidden for so many years.
The entire Sword Pavilion specializes in defense and is not proficient in offense, making it difficult to estimate their actual combat power.
Add to that the reputation of the Sword Pavilion, and the fact that most of the time the Peak Masters do not leave Qinglu Mountain; even if someone wanted to challenge them to make a name for themselves, they would choose schools like that of Sword Master Cold Crow.
After all, fighting with a faction known for defense would lead to unflattering reputation even if one were to win.
And Sword Master Funiu’s own combat power is truly at the Sword Master level, so over time others naturally would not doubt, and the secret remained hidden.
“If it were Yatagarasu Akiryu here, I would just ask for his help, and there are some things I might not tell him.”
Sword Master Funiu looked at Roger, “You should have guessed by now, there’s a problem with the cursed items we use.”
“They’re failing; their inherent power is starting to weaken. If this goes on, it won’t be long before all of us are reduced to our original forms.”
“By then…”
“Has this only started happening recently?”
Roger asked.
Sword Master Funiu nodded, “You should know, we come from the West; after arriving here, although the passageway we used was closed, there still has been a faint energy seeping through near the passageway.”
“That energy is the source that allows us to maintain the cursed items in our hands.”
“But not long ago, there was an accident there; the energy transmitted through became disrupted, and then the cursed items in our hands began to fail.”
“I need someone to go there with me to investigate, the other three are not suitable; our powers are all in defense, and if we encounter any special circumstances, we will be very passive.”
“After all, in that place, many things will become different.”
Sword Master Funiu spoke cryptically.
“That place, where are you referring to?” Roger asked.
“The passageway we used when we arrived.”
“But you told me before, it’s already closed.”
“Yes,” Sword Master Funiu nodded.
“But it’s open now, and I’m not sure where it leads,”
Roger furrowed his brow.
“That doesn’t sound like a good situation at all.”
When it comes to spatial transmission, one can never be too cautious; the passage could be broken, space could be torn, and even getting thrown to somewhere else was a possibility.
The risk factor was too high, and it had the most variables.
Roger had only intended to impersonate someone else and then wait for the Yatagarasu Akiryu to arrive. Hearing how thorny the problem was, he naturally hesitated.
“I understand your concerns,”
The voice of Sword Master Funiu was calm, his eyes filled with a power that reassured.
“I have been there alone; rest assured, it is not a broken spatial passage or a spacetime turbulence.”
“The Different Space is very stable, we just need to identify the cause of the anomaly and find a way to restore it, so that our cursed item can continue to function.”
“If there’s danger, I can bring you back.”
Sword Master Funiu made a promise.
“After all, the Atlas Clansmen were able to use the spatial portal, which proves that we have special abilities to protect ourselves.”
“I can’t do that, but this thing I hold can.”
What Sword Master Funiu referred to was, of course, the cursed item they held in their possession.
Roger looked thoughtful, “Give me some time, I need to think it over.”
He was prepared to stall. The Yatagarasu Akiryu might arrive at any moment so that he wouldn’t need to enter the so-called Different Space with Sword Master Funiu.
During the wait, even if an incident occurred and Roger was prematurely discovered by either Sword Master Funiu or the Yatagarasu Akiryu, he was not worried.
Now powerful, he could always summon Shadow Cottage and control the Elder of Shadows to join the battle.
He could attack or defend as needed.
If Higurashi Gushan was in a good mood and decided to check his home, then Roger would give all the assailants a huge surprise.
“That’s only proper,”
The emotions in Sword Master Funiu’s eyes settled, and a flash of light flickered as the special energy enveloping the entire hall dissipated.
“Come with me, I’ll find someone to take you to rest.”
Sword Master Funiu led Roger to the entrance, where a young man appeared and took Roger deeper into the Sword Pavilion.
Given the difference in identity, the area arranged for Roger was different. The young man walking ahead didn’t dare to speak recklessly, well aware that despite appearing much younger, the person following him commanded a status and power beyond his own.
He knew his place.
Passing through a corridor of pavilions, Roger caught a glimpse of a face flashing past the window at the top of a loft.
With her characteristic hair and familiar aura, Roger recognized her identity at a glance.
Red Sparrow.
Her relationship with Yuan Guanghai…
Forget it, a mistake where both parties were victims, and Yuan Guanghai had already paid with his life. If not for a twist of fate, his current situation could be more tragic than death.
She seemed to be living well; even if her freedom was restricted, as long as she was alive, there was hope.
This time it was a separate courtyard, located near the top of the mountain. Above it was where the Sword Master and the Peak Masters usually lived.
Lately, due to some incidents, the other three Peak Masters weren’t staying in their respective places but remained at the main peak of Qinglu Mountain.
Roger hadn’t met the other three, and his daily needs were being looked after by dedicated staff. From noon till evening, everything was well-organized.
As the sky darkened, a crescent moon hung in the sky.
Suddenly, a flurry of footsteps approached from outside, and the young man who had led Roger during the day appeared in the courtyard in front of the outer corridor with a few delicate figures.
Roger recognized a few of the faces; they were the victors he had once seen from afar during the Daughter’s Festival.
“A special event?”
Roger raised an eyebrow and casually waved his hand; he didn’t even give the young man a chance to speak before he chased everyone out of the courtyard he was in.
The surroundings returned to quiet, the courtyard was deep, and it seemed as if Roger was the only person left.
After an indeterminate amount of time, Roger suddenly spoke.
“Do you plan to stand there until dawn?”
Out from the shadows of the outer corridor, the slightly pale face of Red Sparrow appeared.
