Chapter 247 - Chapter 247 Chapter 247 Dickinsons Purpose
Chapter 247: Chapter 247 Dickinson’s Purpose Chapter 247: Chapter 247 Dickinson’s Purpose Facing Dickinson’s question, Roger didn’t make a sound; as of now, he hadn’t noticed any hidden dangers in himself.
However, according to what Dickinson implied, souls from the Otherworld like them were bound to experience conflicts with the bodies they used, and when the conflict escalated to a certain degree, they would have to abandon that body.
“Has the consciousness of the body itself awakened?”
Dickinson inquired.
“I haven’t reached that stage yet.”
Roger gave an evasive answer.
“I have investigated your information; you first appeared here, and based on that timeline, it should only be a few months, right?”
Roger didn’t answer, so Dickinson took it as an affirmation.
“A few months’ time, even if there was a conflict, it should have been minor, but going forward, you’ll be facing new troubles.”
Dickinson stretched out his hand and scratched at his neck a few times, and Roger noticed that the spot where his fingernails scraped showed a bit of a metallic luster.
“What on earth is this guy?”
“Certainly not human, anyway.”
And the “us” he mentioned represented the many Otherworldly Souls that maintained contact and were like him.
This was indeed a deeply terrifying issue–these people had erased the soul’s mark of the body’s original owner and usurped their nest, continuing to live on under the guise of another’s identity.
If he didn’t take the initiative to reveal himself, it would likely be very difficult for those around him to notice.
“In order to take over this body while causing as little damage to it as possible, I could only slowly erode the original owner’s soul.”
“That lasted for quite a while, and to be honest, it wasn’t a pleasant experience,” Dickinson continued.
“The soul gets eroded, and the body is essentially dead, it’s just that we reoccupied it and animate it.”
“Caught between life and death for too long, new issues arise; a living body will spontaneously generate new consciousness, which is immature and devoid of much capacity for thought.”
“But because they originate from this body, from a congenital perspective, they seem more compatible with the body than we are.”
“To avoid disruption to our control, we have no choice but to erode them again.”
“Once or twice is manageable, but over time and after many instances, the body suffers irreparable damage, coupled with the world’s rejection…”
Dickinson sighed.
“By that time, the body starts malfunctioning, and we are forced to find a new one.”
“This is already my third body,” Dickinson said with a smile at Roger.
“For that reason, I have done a fair bit of research on the history around Bordeaux.”
Although Roger was unclear about how often Dickinson switched bodies, it was evident that he must have lived in the Bordeaux area for some time.
“Is there no way to resolve this abnormal conflict between soul and body?”
Roger asked.
“As far as I am aware, no.”
Dickinson shook his head, “At its core, this conflict is with the world’s rules, and the methods we currently have can only provide relief, not a complete cure.”
“What you’re referring to as relief is…”
Although Roger hadn’t experienced any problems with his body yet, he couldn’t help but be vigilant. If he waited until the conflict became inevitable…
He certainly didn’t want to switch bodies then.
That meant abandoning everything he had accumulated thus far, and while his power was secondary, the friendships and other relationships he had formed were more important.
“As of now, there are only two methods.”
Dickinson stretched out two fingers.
“The first method is to quickly enhance the physical body’s strength. The birth of the new consciousness requires a relatively stable environment, when your strength ceases to improve, and the body no longer undergoes changes.”
“It tends to be easier to accelerate this process.”
Dickinson glanced at Roger, “You’ve just entered the Transcendent, and within this period, your strength has been rapidly increasing, which comparatively makes the possibility of conflict rather low.”
“But as time goes on, the speed of strength improvement slows, and that’s when problems are prone to arise.”
Roger nodded, then took this to heart.
This information didn’t seem as though Dickinson had come up with it on his own; it was likely the result of a group’s collective exploration.
“What about another method?” Roger asked again.
This method seemed simple, but no one could guarantee that their strength would constantly improve rapidly. When hitting a bottleneck, the body would undergo corresponding changes.
“The other method is much simpler than this one.”
Dickinson’s fingernails scratched across the tabletop, “Cursed Land.”
“Being in the Cursed Land can suppress this situation to the greatest extent. Any Cursed Land of medium size or larger has a complete set of operational rules.”
“There, both our bodies and our souls are like foreign entities, and this conflicting environment can actually minimize the opposition between us and our bodies.”
Dickinson pointed at himself, “I once stayed in New Moon City beneath Bordeaux for a very long time, until I had to leave.”
“Had to leave?”
Roger asked with curiosity.
“Staying there does lessen the conflict between the soul and the body, but as time goes by, there will come a day when that place will no longer have any effect on us.”
“And this is the biggest drawback of the second solution.”
“What if you switch to a new Cursed Land?” an idea surfaced in Roger’s mind.
However, Dickinson just smiled.
“Do you think there are many Cursed Lands that meet the requirements?”
“Even if you really find such a place, you’re not ensured the opportunity to stay there for long.”
“After all, Cursed Lands that meet the requirements are the most precious secrets for every power. Without accumulation and recognition of identity, you have no way to enter there, let alone stay there for long.”
Roger thought for a moment and realized that Dickinson made a valid point, “Cursed Lands that meet the requirements?” he pondered with some confusion.
“We can’t clarify the specific rules, as every world’s rules have their special characteristics. If your body shows anomalies, the moment you enter one of those places, you will be able to tell.”
Roger furrowed his brows in thought.
His mind drifted to the Mist Hut; if a conflict truly arose, he wondered about that place…
If all of this were true, even if his body wasn’t showing any abnormalities now, he needed to plan ahead.
After drinking the slightly cold coffee in his cup, Roger looked at Dickinson sitting opposite him.
“After all that, there’s still one thing I just can’t figure out.”
He stared into Dickinson’s eyes, “Telling me all this, just what are you aiming for?”
“Purpose.”
Dickinson nodded.
“Indeed, I have my own motives, but at the same time, what I do also benefits you.”
“I need your help.”
He scratched at his neck briefly.
“You can probably tell, this body I am using now is almost falling apart, I need a new one.”
“I think, as a fellow kind, you should be able to help me!”
