Defying the Rogue Alpha
Chapter 88: Spot

Chapter 88: Spot

Ava raised a brow.

"What you did in there," Dennis said, nodding toward the village, "was very impressive."

She smiled.

Dennis arched a brow at her. "Ah, look at that. I thought Lucas had taught you the constant brooding face. You are ugly when you scowl."

"I am not!" she protested.

"Right."

"I am not!"

Dennis chuckled. "Whatever you say, Luna."

Ava rolled her eyes, but the smile lingered.

"I’m not going to risk the life of my people," Dennis continued, sobering slightly. "But if you’re really serious about taking Dorian down..." He shrugged. "I can help."

Ava’s eyes brightened, and she nodded.

Dennis sighed.

He was so going to regret this.

"So," Ava said after a moment, looking back toward the river. "About this spot?"

Dennis frowned. "What about it?"

"You want us to make some kind of routine so we don’t invade each other’s private time here?" she suggested.

Dennis gasped dramatically, clutching his chest. "You haven’t even spent a day here and you’re already splitting up my favorite things?"

Ava laughed. Dennis shook his head, watching her. Maybe Lucas did love her. She was quite lovable.

Missy sat, watching Ava and Dennis with a smile so wide it looked like it might split her face in two.

Dennis noticed, of course. How could he not? The woman looked like a cat who had swallowed an entire flock of birds.

The problem was, Dennis had no idea what was making her so giddy.

It was unsettling.

"What?" he finally asked, brow furrowing. "What’s with that face?"

Missy didn’t answer.

She just kept grinning.

Dennis sighed. He didn’t have the energy for whatever chaos was brewing inside that woman’s mind. Instead, he refocused on the conversation at hand.

"So, is there anything you can do?" he asked, folding his arms.

"Did Lanaya tell you anything about your powers?" Missy asked.

Ava sighed. "Honestly, I was barely interested at the time," she admitted. "There was so much going on, but all she really said was that I had healing powers."

Missy made a sound that could only be described as a tsk of disappointment.

"Hmmm... seems like Lanaya is slipping," she muttered, shaking her head dramatically. "You have much more than healing powers, my dear."

Ava arched a brow. "I do?"

"Oh, yes," Missy confirmed, eyes twinkling with excitement. "You have an ability that will make you the envy of every Alpha. And when you have a child, whew... mama!" She wiggled her eyebrows and let out a giggle that sent a shiver of dread down Dennis’s spine.

He knew that tone.

That was the tone of a woman who was about to cause problems.

"Missy? Focus." Dennis shot her a pointed look, hoping to derail whatever madness was bubbling beneath the surface.

Missy sighed but complied.

"You do not need an intermediary to use your powers," she explained, now addressing Ava with more seriousness. "You have to learn to harness them yourself. To command them."

Ava frowned, processing that.

Missy stepped closer, eyes gleaming with something akin to reverence. "That power," she continued, "can be both destructive and good. You can destroy your enemies without even breaking a sweat. Or... you can use it to heal."

Ava exhaled, rubbing her temples. "Okay... so how do I learn?"

Missy grinned. "By speaking to your wolf," she said simply. "She will teach you."

A shadow passed over Ava’s face, her lips pressing into a thin line.

"Willow has only surfaced once," she admitted. "Since then, I haven’t been able to reach her. It seems odd because I know that you’re supposed to be able to connect to your wolf after the first transformation. But even now..." She shook her head. "Nothing."

Dennis noted the frustration in her tone.

He knew how vital that connection was.

"But I do heal faster now," Ava continued, almost as if she was trying to convince herself that at least something had changed. "I just can’t reach her."

"We will work on that," Missy assured her.

Ava nodded, though she still looked troubled.

Dennis sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Alright, enough thinking for one night," he said. "I’ll show you where you can rest."

Ava let out a small breath of relief. "That would be great. My brain is going to explode."

Before Dennis could take a step, Missy suddenly clapped her hands. "Can I speak with you... alone, Alpha?"

Dennis narrowed his eyes.

He really didn’t like the way she said that.

Ava glanced between them, then shrugged and stepped outside without question.

As soon as the door shut behind her, Dennis turned to Missy. "Okay, what is it? And why are you looking at me like that?"

Missy grinned. Dennis groaned. "Missy? Did you hit your head?"

"Oh, Alpha," Missy sighed dramatically, placing a hand over her heart. "You have to mate with her."

Dennis choked. It was so unexpected, so absurd, that he actually gasped in horror.

"You did hit your head," he accused, reaching out as if checking for a bump on her skull.

Missy smacked his hand away. "I’m serious!"

Dennis took a step back, holding his hands up. "Missy, have you seen the mark on her neck?"

"Yes."

"She is Lucas’s mate."

Missy scoffed. "A mate he wants dead."

Dennis let out an exasperated laugh. "What is wrong with you?"

Missy took a deep breath, looking him dead in the eye. "Alpha," she said, "a child from the both of you... a Raventhorn and a Child of the Moon having a child together..." She clutched her chest dramatically. "Oh, Alpha! Your pack will take over the world!"

Dennis stared at her.

Did she hear herself?

"Okay," he said slowly, "let’s assume for a second that you didn’t hit your head and that you are in full control of your mental faculties."

Missy nodded eagerly.

Dennis took a deep breath. "SHE IS MY BROTHER’S MATE!"

Missy waved a dismissive hand. "Once again, a mate he discarded."

Dennis felt like he was about to combust.

"She isn’t my type," he tried, desperate for any excuse that would make this conversation end.

Missy gave him a look. "Make her your type."

Dennis nearly growled in frustration. "I am not her type."

Missy didn’t even hesitate. "Make yourself her type."

Dennis stared at her, eyes twitching slightly.

There was no winning this.

"Missy," he said slowly, "it’s not going to happen. Even if my brother thinks otherwise, I won’t betray him that way."

Missy sighed heavily, but she seemed to back down.

Temporarily. Dennis knew that look in her eyes.

She was plotting.

And when Missy plotted, chaos followed.

Still, she gave a small nod, as if conceding. "Alright, alright," she muttered.

Dennis exhaled, relieved.

As Missy turned away, a wicked glint flashed in her eyes.

If fate wasn’t going to play matchmaker, then she would.

One way or another, Ava and Dennis would be together.

And when they were, the rogue pack would rise.
