Defying the Rogue Alpha -
Chapter 47: Chaos
Chapter 47: Chaos
Ava barely had time to turn before something massive crashed into her, knocking her to the ground. She turned and saw Lucas’s body heavy on top of hers.
His blood soaked into her dress.
Ava’s heart stopped.
He fell back, eyes flickering.
No.
No, no, no, no.
Chaos erupted around them.
The music cut out.
People screamed.
Ava barely noticed any of it.
She scrambled, grabbing his face.
His skin was going cold.
"No," she gasped. "Lucas! Lucas, look at me!"
Dorian was suddenly there, kneeling beside them. His eyes were wild.
"Do something!" Ava screamed.
Lanaya shoved through the crowd, hands already glowing with magic as she pressed them to Lucas’s chest.
Ava gripped his face harder.
His eyes were on her, unfocused, glassy.
His lips parted.
Lucas was mouthing something, his lips barely moving.
Lanaya had to lean in, her sharp healer’s ears straining to catch his words.
"Protect Ava," he choked out in strangled syllables.
Lanaya whispered into Kade’s ear who was also beside her.
Kade reacted immediately. He didn’t hesitate, just grabbed Ava and started dragging her away.
Ava thrashed. "The hell are you doing?! Let me go!"
Her voice wasn’t her own.
Deep, raw, full of a power she hadn’t tapped into before.
Kade, a freaking Gamma General actually flinched. His instincts screamed at him to obey. But he had his Alpha’s orders.
"Sorry, Ava," Kade grunted, signaling to the other Gammas.
Ava screamed as more hands grabbed her, forcing her toward the waiting vehicle. Kicking, thrashing, probably looking like an enraged gremlin, she fought.
"LET GO OF ME!"
The command rippled.
Some of the wolves actually stumbled back. But Kade clenched his jaw and forced himself to move forward.
The look Ava shot him? Murderous.
But Lucas’s order was absolute.
Ava was hauled into the car, cursing in ways that would make a sailor blush.
"It’s a silver bullet," Lanaya sighed in resignation. Her voice carried to everyone standing around. Their hearts going out to their alpha.
This was the end of Alpha Lucas Raventhorn.

Dorian paced.
His boots thudded against the floors of the Alpha’s quarters as he raked a hand through his hair, his fingers pulling at the strands in pure frustration.
He was furious.
If Lucas died, his brother would take over. And that would be the end of everything.
For him.
Who had the guts to use a silver bullet?
That kind of thing was outlawed in the werewolf world. Only a handful of humans even knew it was an Achilles’ heel.
Whoever had done this was either insane... or desperate.
His Gammas were already sniffing around for answers. But answers wouldn’t mean shit if Lucas didn’t live.
Lanaya emerged from the room.
Dorian turned to her, praying for good news.
"There’s nothing I can do," she said, her voice softer than usual. "Life seeps from him by the minute. He calls for Ava. Could you send for her?"
Dorian exhaled slowly.
Of course he does.
*****
Ava was on the floor.
Like, actually collapsed at the entrance of the Alpha’s building, arms curled around herself like that would somehow hold in the giant gaping hole in her chest.
She hadn’t moved since they arrived. Hadn’t spoken. Just sat there.
Despite everyone’s protests.
Praying. To the Moon Goddess. To anyone.
The universe owed her this one.
Lucas was all she had left.
"Ava?"
She snapped her head up so fast her neck cracked.
Dorian stood over her, his expression unreadable.
"How is he?" she rasped.
He didn’t answer. Just said, "Come on. The Alpha wants you."
Ava scrambled to her feet, bolted past him, and ran straight into the Alpha’s quarters.
Lucas looked... bad.
Pale. Too still.
His chest barely moved.
Ava’s heart stopped.
"Lucas," she gasped.
Her legs gave out beside his bed, her knees slamming against the floor.
His scent was still there but it was fading.
No.
No, no, no.
She grabbed his hand, gripping it.
"Lucas, please," she sobbed. "You can’t. Don’t leave me."
She squeezed harder, desperate, panicked.
Her vision blurred.
"I love you."
The words tumbled out before she could stop them.
"There. I said it," she whispered. "I love you with everything I have. All of me loves you. So now just...just stay, okay? Stay with me. Please."
Lucas’s lips twitched in a smile.
Ava’s soul shattered. She let out a broken, guttural sob.
Something crackled.
Lanaya gasped.
The air in the room shifted, humming with an unseen force.
Ava didn’t notice.
Lanaya watched in awe as the air in the room tensed. The same familiar glow that had erupted from Ava when she was dying crackled between their hands. She instantly got to work.
"Ava! Place your hand on his chest. Come on... quickly!!!" Lanaya’s voice rang through the room, sharp with urgency.
Ava didn’t understand, but she obeyed without hesitation, pressing her trembling hand to Lucas’s chest. His heartbeat was faint, barely there, and the thought sent a fresh wave of panic through her.
Lanaya muttered under her breath, her hands moving in practiced gestures, weaving the air. A silver glow erupted between Ava and Lucas, crackling like lightning, filling the room with a blinding brilliance.
Dorian took a stunned step back, his mouth slightly agape. This was impossible.
Lucas gasped, his eyes flying open, but at the same moment, Ava’s body tensed, her breathing turning ragged.
"Stop!" Lucas rasped, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Don’t!!!" Ava shot back, her voice laced with determination.
Dorian, for the first time in his life, found himself in agreement with Ava.
Lanaya ignored both of them, fully immersed in the magic swirling between them.
Lucas, however, was having none of it. He gritted his teeth and gripped Ava’s wrist, trying to pry her hand off him. Even weakened, she was somehow stronger, her fingers digging into his chest.
"No..." Ava gasped.
Then, as suddenly as it had begun, the glow flickered and died. Lanaya sagged back, gasping for breath, and Ava collapsed to the floor.
