Defying the Rogue Alpha
Chapter 198: Chance

Chapter 198: Chance

Neither of them stood a chance. The bond wasn’t waiting for permission...it had wrapped its tendrils around them both and yanked them into each other’s orbit.

Kade’s hand slid into her hair, anchoring her, and their mouths warred. She bit his lip and he growled into her mouth. It was two people trying to get as close as physically possible because words had failed and emotion had boiled over.

May moaned, a sound that shot straight through his core and he lifted her off the ground like she weighed nothing. She squeaked in surprise but didn’t stop him, wrapping her legs around his waist instinctively.

He set her down on the back of the couch, his hands sliding up the soft skin of her thighs. She was breathing fast, heart pounding against his chest, eyes glazed with want.

"This..." she breathed, "...is a bad idea."

"Terrible," Kade agreed, lips trailing down her jaw. "Truly awful."

She arched against him. "This doesn’t mean anything. This could just be stress. Or hormones."

Kade looked up at her, his hand still cupping her thigh. "Or fate," he whispered before catching her lips again.

He knew they were skirting the edge of danger. Because once they crossed that line, there would be no going back.

Still, with her lips on his and her scent clouding his head, he couldn’t bring himself to care.

Within a minute, one reckless, heat-fueled minute, Kade’s fingers found their way beneath the soft edge of her underwear, shifting the barrier aside and plunging into her warmth.

May gasped and tore her lips from his, her head falling back. "Mr. Kade..." she whispered, breathless, trembling.

And Kade was suddenly very aware that "Mr. Kade" was doing very un-Mister-like things. He wasn’t being a gentleman. Hell, he wasn’t even being a decent man. He was being selfish, primal, an asshole in wolf’s clothing. Because no matter how tightly he held her, how deeply he touched her, how good he made her feel... he was still leaving in the morning.

No explanations. No promises. Just guilt and a memory.

Still, that didn’t stop him. It should have. But it didn’t.

His resolve cracked as he bent down, licking the outline of her neck. She moaned, her lips parting again as her body trembled under his hand, which never ceased its slow, determined rhythm inside her.

Her breath hitched, then caught like she was holding on for dear life. And Kade, still gripping her hair like she was his anchor to reality, knew he was past the point of reason.

With a snarl of frustration and longing, he tore his fingers from her core, if only to rip at her dress, exposing her chest.

His hand returned inside her, almost like he couldn’t stand the absence and his lips found the swell of her breasts. He kissed her there, open-mouthed and unrestrained. He licked and sucked, slow at first, then fast.

May arched, whimpering his name. Her hands finally moved from where they’d clutched the edge of the couch and slid to his chest. She brushed her fingers across his nipples, a light, accidental graze that somehow unhinged him completely.

Kade growled, deep and animalistic, like she’d flipped a hidden switch. He was gone now, lost to the bond, to the smell of her skin, to the way she clenched around his fingers like she never wanted to let go.

And then she came.

Beautifully. Powerfully.

Her entire body spasmed, every muscle clenching, her cries muffled in the crook of his neck. He held her steady, bracing her with strong arms so she didn’t topple off the couch.

She shook in his hold, her orgasm tearing through her. Her hair stuck to her damp forehead, her thighs trembled, and Kade just held her, waiting for her breathing to slow, for the aftershocks to pass.

He felt her settle.

Her body softened in his arms.

And then, like a man waking from a trance, he pulled his fingers from inside her, gently this time, like he couldn’t bear to part from her but knew he had to.

He kissed her one last time.

Coward.

He didn’t look at her face. Couldn’t. Because if he did, he might just forget all the reasons he’d given himself to stay away.

But as he turned, a quiet voice floated behind him, sleepy and satisfied.

"You’re still a jerk, Mr. Kade."

Kade stopped at the door, half-grinning to himself, jaw clenched.

"I know," he murmured.

And then he left.

Because running was easier than staying.

Even if it hurt like hell.

The moment Lucas had been waiting for since they returned from the North had finally arrived. A parchment bearing the High Council’s golden seal sat in his hand. There was no guessing, no ambiguity. A summon from them wasn’t a request, it was a command. And Lucas had the unfortunate pleasure of knowing exactly what it would be about.

With a quiet sigh that rumbled more like a growl, he folded the parchment and shoved it into his desk drawer. He didn’t bother trying to mask the storm brewing in his chest. The High Council were a couple of pussies and hypocrites.

He made his way to the Luna’s quarters. When he walked in, the room looked like a baby boutique had exploded. Tiny onesies in every shade of pastel, stacks of baby books, plush toys and Ava herself, barefoot and radiant, crouched over a box of pacifiers.

Seeing Adelita had clearly flipped some nesting switch in her brain. Lucas wasn’t sure whether he should be concerned or amused.

Ava looked up just as he crossed the threshold, and instantly, her smile faded. She knew him too well. She could read his silences better than most could interpret words.

"Lucas?" she asked. She slowly began to rise, her hands bracing her lower back. "What’s wrong?"

Lucas moved toward her and caught her hand, steadying her as if the news he was about to give would knock them both off balance. "I just got word from the High Council," he said grimly. "I’ve been summoned."
