Defying the Rogue Alpha
Chapter 110: Cautious

Chapter 110: Cautious

Anita swatted it away.

"Get away from me!" she snapped.

Ava froze, her face a mixture of shock and hurt.

Had she done something wrong? She had barely spoken to anyone outside Dennis and a handful of pack members.

"Have I done something wrong?" she asked cautiously.

Anita let out a humorless chuckle as she picked herself up. "Have you?"

Ava blinked, confused.

Anita dusted off her pants and crossed her arms, glaring. "Since you got here, we haven’t had a moment’s peace. If you know what’s good for you, leave. We don’t want you here. Neither do we want Lucas here."

The farm fell silent.

Everyone had stopped what they were doing, pretending not to eavesdrop while very obviously eavesdropping.

Ava felt like the earth had just opened up beneath her.

She knew she wasn’t exactly the most welcomed guest, but hearing it said so plainly? It stung.

Dennis, who had overheard the exchange, wiped his hands on his shirt and approached.

"Anita, come on," he said, his voice carrying a warning. "Be nice."

Anita cast him a look, bowed her head in forced obedience, and returned to her task.

Dennis sighed. "Don’t take it personally," he said, watching as Ava stared at the ground. "No one here likes Lucas."

Ava exhaled, shaking her head. "She’s right, though. I’ve made a mess of things."

Dennis frowned. "And you also fixed some things. It’s going to be fine."

"Yeah, sure."

As she turned to walk away, they heard the sound of marching feet approaching.

Dennis’s spine went rigid. "What the hell?"

The pack members perked up, looking toward the gate.

Ava followed Dennis as he ran toward the front entrance, the rest of the pack trailing behind, murmuring nervously.

When they reached the entrance, Dennis’s blood pressure skyrocketed.

Lucas’s gammas. At least fifty of them, taking positions along the boundary.

Two stood right at the main gate, looking as stone-faced as statues.

"What the fuck is going on?" Dennis barked.

One of the gammas snapped to attention. "Alpha’s orders to stand guard, sir!"

Dennis felt his temper ignite.

"What the fuck is wrong with Lucas?!"

The murmuring grew louder.

Anita let out a sharp hiss.

"It’s all because of her!" she sneered, jabbing a finger at Ava. "We’ve lived here in peace. We don’t have much, but we were safe. Now look! The Silver Pack is hovering over us!"

Dennis turned so fast his hair nearly whipped his own face.

"You have no right to decide who I take into this pack," he said. "None."

Anita swallowed. Dennis took a step closer, his eyes locked on hers. "Shut your mouth, and get the hell away from here before I do something I’ll regret."

Anita stormed off.

The tension didn’t ease.

Dennis turned back to the gammas, his jaw tight.

"I need someone to tell me what the fuck is going on in the next ten minutes or I will rip off your heads, and I don’t care if it starts a war."

The gammas nodded, not even attempting to argue.

Dennis ran a hand through his hair, exhaling sharply.

Lucas wasn’t trying to start a fight.

This wasn’t an invasion.

It was protection.

And there was only one reason Lucas would be this paranoid.

Ava was in danger.

And he didn’t think Dennis could protect her.

Alaric’s eyes locked onto his daughter as she fastened the leather straps of her travel bag. The weight of his expectations pressed down on her, heavier than any baggage she could carry. This mission was crucial. The Alpha King himself had assigned it, and failure was not an option.

"You understand what you must do?" he asked.

Zoe met his gaze without hesitation.

"Find the Daughter of the Moon," she recited dutifully.

Alaric gave a slow nod. Good. She knew the stakes.

From the folds of his robe, he produced an ornate amulet. It pulsed faintly, as if alive.

"This will lead you to her," he said, placing it in her palm.

Zoe studied the ancient piece. It was cool to the touch, its energy tingling against her skin. She had worked with powerful relics before, but this one was different.

"What do I do when I find her?" she asked.

Alaric’s lips curled into the shadow of a smirk. "Inform me. I will tell you what the next step is. Once we identify who she is, the rest is simple."

She gave a single nod. She had learned long ago never to ask too many questions. Her job was to obey.

Besides, the more she knew, the harder it would be to lie if she was caught.

And she had every intention of not getting caught.

Zoe knew that being Alaric’s daughter was both a privilege and a curse.

Her father was the most feared and revered spiritualist in the north.

People bowed when he entered a room.

Whispered when he left.

But his influence came at a cost, and she bore the weight of it on her shoulders.

Every mission. Every success. Every failure.

The consequences of disappointing him were not something she wished to experience again.

Alaric had no tolerance for weakness.

Alaric studied her in silence for a long moment.

She held herself still, waiting.

Finally, he spoke.

"The King’s jet will fly you to the human territory," he said.

Zoe simply nodded.

"The amulet will guide you to her. You must head east." His eyes darkened. "No one must know who you really are. Or what your agenda is."

She could hear the unspoken warning beneath his words.

Do not fail me.

She never did.

"Yes, Father. I will send word as soon as I find her."

He gave a sharp nod and dismissed her with a flick of his wrist.

Zoe turned on her heel, leaving the chamber without a backward glance.

She had a mission to complete.

Alaric remained behind, the air heavy with the scent of incense and burning herbs.

The Alpha king was as impatient as he was powerful.

Uniting the werewolf kingdoms was no small task, but if he succeeded...

Alaric would stand at his right hand.

The most powerful spiritualist ever known.

The King would demand updates soon, and Alaric had better have them.

He settled into his meditation pose, hands resting lightly on his knees. The smell of burning sage curled through the air.

Somewhere, deep in the east, the Daughter of the Moon was unaware that a hunter was coming and it wasn’t the one she was familiar with.
