Chapter 82: The Feuding Couple

When Chu Ge saw the all-too-familiar decor, her heart momentarily softened. But as soon as she heard Lin Chengdu’s words, any trace of tenderness evaporated, replaced by a surge of anger so fierce she could hardly resist the urge to tear apart his fake smiling face.

Lin Qin couldn’t bear watching the scene unfold. He had just seen tears welling up in Chu Ge’s eyes, only to see them forcibly held back because of a single sentence from Lin Chengdu.

At his young age, he could already tell—his father was a complete pushover in front of his mother, albeit a very prideful pushover.

Chu Ge took a deep breath, finally managing to suppress her anger. She spun around, shot Lin Chengdu a furious glare, and marched off to the kitchen in her high heels, the sharp "click-clack-click" echoing with every step. As she passed by Lin Qin, her tone suddenly softened into one of remarkable tenderness. "Sweetheart, what would you like to eat? Mommy will cook it for you."

Lin Qin smiled at her. "I’m okay with anything."

To be honest, it had been a long time since Lin Qin had eaten anything cooked by Chu Ge. In fact, if he thought about it carefully, it had been even before the divorce. During the worst of the incessant arguments between his parents, Chu Ge had already stopped cooking.

Chu Ge wasn’t actually a great cook. Before marrying Lin Chengdu, she was a pampered young lady who had never so much as lifted a finger in the kitchen. But she truly loved Lin Chengdu. For him, she gave up her thriving career and her social circle, just to settle down and be a homemaker. In only two years, she went from someone who couldn’t fry an egg to someone who could whip up a feast.

The Lin family came from an influential lineage. The two had grown up together, and their relationship as childhood sweethearts was strong. Chu Ge had been spoilt and indulged from a young age, and before their marriage, Lin Chengdu treated her like a princess. Even after they got married, he still doted on her as though she were his world.

But Lin Chengdu was a man with grand ambitions and a fiercely independent streak. He was unwilling to rest on his laurels or take over the family business; he was determined to build his own empire with his own abilities, entirely independent of the Lin family.

In the beginning, Chu Ge wholeheartedly supported him. She became the backbone of their household, dedicating all her youth to Lin Chengdu’s dreams. Lin Chengdu, indeed capable, founded Chutian Entertainment from scratch and steadily grew it into a successful business.

As his career flourished, he became busier, often staying away from home. Given the nature of his entertainment company, he was surrounded by beautiful women, and the media frequently ran speculative gossip about the stars under his banner, often with little basis in fact.

These rumors gradually eroded Chu Ge’s confidence. She saw herself as aging and unattractive, and she began to believe that Lin Chengdu had fallen out of love and had found someone else outside their marriage.

Perhaps seeking to regain Lin Chengdu’s attention or simply driven by her own wounded pride, Chu Ge initiated arguments on the rare occasions when he was home.

At the same time, Lin Chengdu’s company was facing challenges, and he was already exhausted from working tirelessly day and night. Coming home only to be misunderstood by his spouse further frayed his patience, and he could no longer tolerate the whims she used to have.

A marriage filled with misunderstandings, irritability, and a lack of communication—it was only natural that it would culminate in divorce. Looking back, though, it’s hard to pinpoint who was truly at fault.

Chu Ge, proud as she was, believed that leaving Lin Chengdu would lead to a better life for herself. Ignoring her family’s pleas, she left without a backward glance, throwing herself into her career abroad. It wasn’t until she learned that Lin Qin had developed social anxiety that she hastily returned to the country.

Lin Chengdu, on the other hand, was also extremely prideful, with an ego too big to admit his mistakes. For this reason, they both kept dragging things on. Years had passed, but everyone could see that the feelings between them hadn’t faded.

Lin Qin, perceptive as he was, quickly grasped the core issue between his parents. If they no longer had feelings for each other, Lin Qin wouldn’t have cared. Let them waste their time however they wanted. But in reality, the love between them was just as strong as ever, and watching them squander time like this was simply maddening.

Lin Qin sat on the sofa, pondering for a long while. Finally, he looked at Lin Chengdu and asked, "Dad, why didn’t you just tell Mom the truth just now? You clearly haven’t let go of the past."

Lin Chengdu’s face flushed red. He stiffened his neck and said, "What are you talking about? I told her the truth!"

Lin Qin pressed further, "Do you think Mom’s beautiful now?"

Though Lin Chengdu liked to argue with Chu Ge at every turn, even he couldn’t deny the fact—his ex-wife was stunningly beautiful and incredibly charming.

He turned his head away, refusing to respond.

"I think Mom’s really beautiful," Lin Qin said with a sly smile. "And I bet there are tons of people chasing after her now."

"Impossible!" Lin Chengdu instinctively retorted. "She’s an old woman now! Who would be chasing after her?"

Right at that moment, Chu Ge walked out of the kitchen and caught his last sentence. She let out a heavy snort. "Hate to disappoint you, but this ’old woman’ is way more in demand than you, ’old man’! The line of people chasing me could stretch from my office all the way to the airport!"

Lin Chengdu sneered, "Keep dreaming!"

"Lin Chengdu, you—!" Chu Ge slammed the bowl down on the dining table. She was ready to retort when a flirtatious smile suddenly softened her face. Running her fingers through her big waves of hair, she said, "If it weren’t for our precious son being here today, I wouldn’t even bother having dinner with an old man like you. Do you know how many young, handsome men are begging to take me out to eat?"

Lin Chengdu’s veins throbbed with rage. "Don’t you dare!"

"Why wouldn’t I dare?" Chu Ge chuckled devilishly. "Having dinner with young men is far more interesting than eating with you, old man!"

Clearly, Chu Ge was holding a grudge over being called an "old woman" earlier.

Satisfied with how Lin Chengdu’s face darkened, Chu Ge knew that he still cared about her. But she continued to prod him, "And besides, why do you think you have the right to control me? Are you my husband? My boyfriend? I’ll eat with whoever I want—you don’t get to control me!"

At a loss for words, Lin Chengdu turned to Lin Qin, who was doing his utmost to make himself invisible. Feigning seriousness, he said sternly, "How could you tolerate your mother saying such things in front of you? Even if she’s shameless, I feel ashamed on her behalf!"

Chu Ge also turned to Lin Qin. "Sweetheart, you’d be happy if Mommy found someone who could accompany her for the rest of her life, wouldn’t you?"

Lin Chengdu immediately fixed his gaze on Lin Qin, eyes narrowing menacingly.

Lin Qin, caught in the crossfire: "..."

I’m small, helpless, and innocent. I don’t know anything. Truly, I don’t!
