Chapter 57: 50. Hence, Dubian Che confessed in the courtyard_2
Jiutiao Meijie paid no mind to him and took her seat at the head of the table.
The elegantly simple and exquisitely made white dress accentuated her superb physique, with a full bust, a waist that was slender in just the right way, and legs that bore the enviable curves all women dream of.
Her beauty was so exceptional that even other women might be tempted.
"Let’s begin," she commanded.
Kiyono Lizzi nodded, pulling out stacks of documents from her briefcase, followed by an array of arcane terms Dubian Che couldn’t comprehend.
And whenever Jiutiao Meijie spoke, Kiyono Lizzi would look to Kiyono Lin for confirmation, and only when Lin nodded would she continue with a sense of reassurance.
’Well, I, Dubian Che, am willing to call you "Lie Detector Lin",’ Dubian Che mused to himself, feeling he still had a lot to learn as he mocked the situation in boredom.
Fortunately, halfway through, the maid who brought Dubian Che some savory snacks returned, giving him something to occupy himself with.
Only to be scolded by Jiutiao Meijie while he ate.
"Keep it down," she said.
"The pastry is flaky; it’s not my fault."
Then came the murderous gaze from Jiutiao Meijie, and Dubian Che surrendered, gave up on his snacks, and with a heavy sigh, continued to listen to the two discuss incomprehensible matters.
This world was still too far from his reach; he was currently learning Spanish, which was an impressive feat in itself, even though it was self-taught.
The meeting finally concluded after a full two hours.
"Stay behind," Jiutiao Meijie ordered Dubian Che before leaving the living room by herself.
Dubian Che, cynically guessing her motives, figured she must have gone to use the restroom and had probably been holding it for a while.
On the other side, Kiyono Lin and Kiyono Lizzi exited the villa, leaving the spacious courtyard behind.
"What is the relationship between that young man called Dubian Che and the younger Miss of the Jiutiao Family?" Kiyono Lizzi asked.
"Who knows?"
"Ever since Jiutiao Meijie moved in, no man had ever been allowed in," Kiyono Lizzi looked back at the villa and then at Lin, "You could find out their relationship, couldn’t you, little Lin?"
"That’s not my duty, goodbye," said Kiyono Lin, and she turned to leave.
"Let me walk you home."
"It’s not necessary."
Back at the house, after a short wait, Dubian Che saw Jiutiao Meijie again, now dressed in a different outfit.
The two began their dinner.
"Do you always eat this late?" He cut a piece of beef with his fork and knife, putting it in his mouth.
Though he didn’t know the specifics of the meat, the fat melted at a low temperature, dissolving immediately with the warmth of his mouth.
Dubian Che relished the explosion of flavors. For a few seconds, he felt that getting into this mess today wasn’t entirely foolish.
"It depends on when I finish my work," Jiutiao Meijie replied, her lack of enthusiasm in stark contrast to Dubian Che’s delight, eating purely out of necessity.
Recalling how she usually spent much of her time sleeping, it seemed her life wasn’t easy... but that had nothing to do with Dubian Che, and he felt no sympathy.
He took a sip of juice, "Actually, I came to see you today for a reason."
"Oh?"
Dubian Che cleared his throat silently, "What do I have to do for you to consider getting back together with me?"
The living room, already quiet, became dead silent, as if in silent tribute at a wake.
"Do you like me?" asked Jiutiao Meijie with a smile.
"Of course. You’re beautiful, you have great legs, and your family is wealthy. To tell you the truth, my original goal was to become a civil servant and let the taxpayers support me for the rest of my carefree life."
"You still could."
"I am the eldest son of the Dubian Family; I must marry and have children, but you wouldn’t allow me to be with other women, would you?"
Jiutiao Meijie put down her cutlery and propped her elbows on the table, resting her chin in her hands.
She looked at Dubian Che, "Of course, forget about it for the rest of your life."
"See, that’s why the only path I see is to be with you."
"That won’t do," Jiutiao Meijie’s face remained smiling, "Even if you were with me, you’d have to take my surname and become part of the Jiutiao Family."
"Surnames are feudal and outdated, they’re irrelevant," retorted Dubian Che, who moments before had insisted on the importance of the ’eldest son carrying on the family line.’
Jiutiao Meijie laughed lightly but gave no definitive response, "Is that so?"
"Besides, we could be like Emperor Taisho and Empress Jiutiao, have four children, and then I’d be satisfied if even one of them took the Dubian surname."
"Mmm," Jiutiao Meijie hummed with apparent interest.
"Furthermore, aside from my looks, which are second to none, my physical abilities would ensure your protection at any time, not to mention my intelligence and unwavering diligence. I wouldn’t help with your work, but at the very least, I wouldn’t hold you back."
"Uh-huh," Jiutiao Meijie nodded, "Go on."
"Well, well..." Dubian Che racked his brains, finally coming up with another point, "Think about it, Meijie, if you were with someone of equal social standing, they might covet the power and wealth of the Jiutiao Family, but not me. I’m from the countryside, I have no background, and no one would back me."
"What if, while you’re bearing our four children, you seize the opportunity to usurp power?" Jiutiao Meijie said teasingly.
Dubian Che puffed out his chest, "I’m confident in my desire to live a life of idleness. Studying is just for personal enrichment, not to gain anything from it."
Jiutiao Meijie, propping her cheek with her hand, listened to him finish, then playfully tapped her cheek with her fingers, "Alright, I’ll give you a chance."
