Chapter 260: 142. Sports Festival (7)
October 21, Wednesday, unexpectedly cold in the early morning.
Skirts of pure black with a sheen reached the knee, slender, sturdy, fair, dark legs peeked out from underneath as girls sat in rows inside the gymnasium.
The boys, dressed in western-style school uniforms, couldn’t stay still for a second, eagerly perched on the shoulders of those in front, craning their necks in all directions.
"Silence!" the PE teacher bellowed, and everyone immediately sat up straight with proper posture.
The principal, whose hair had turned gray but still looked vibrant, stood on the podium.
He pulled out a sheet of paper from his old-fashioned suit pocket, slowly unfolded it, glanced at the note, and said a few words.
"In this fruitful season of autumn, we at Goda High School, filled with joy, welcome the 56th sports festival with high spirits..."
As the boys and girls seated together got to know each other better, the principal’s speech, which was apparently short on paper, seemed lengthy when spoken, but finally, it was nearing an end.
"...Before the sports festival begins, I want to mention one thing: our school’s third-year student, Mayi Asuka, achieved the remarkable feat of coming third in the recent national mock exams."
Mild applause sounded from below in response.
"Also, first-year student Dubian Che, has taken the first place in the country, let’s give him a round of applause!"
The principal led the applause, which at last warmed up a bit.
"Therefore, before the sports festival starts, I would like to invite Dubian Che as the student representative to give a speech, Dubian Che."
"Present!" Lin’s resolute voice echoed in the gymnasium.
The boys showed signs of despair.
"Isn’t this supposed to be the opening ceremony of the sports festival?"
"You’re wrong, it’s actually the entrance ceremony."
"It’s one thing to let someone make a speech, but why him? Shouldn’t it be a third-year senior?"
"The Jiutiao family’s son-in-law, who else could it be but him?"
"I’m so jealous of this guy, not only does he have a pretty, rich girlfriend, but he’s also handsome, and he excels academically, number one in the country! I heard he’s also a key player in the Wind Instrument Club that made it to nationals?"
"It’s because he’s handsome, academically skilled, and good at music that he could get a girlfriend like Jiutiao, right?"
"It’s disgusting, how can someone be so talented!"
The girls, on the other hand, were unperturbed.
Ever since the Cultural Festival’s "400 Kilometers from Iwate Prefecture to Tokyo" aired, their interest in Dubian Che, the girl-beater, had faded.
In its place was the image of a somber Dubian Che under the sun, eyes closed, playing the oboe, always gazing with those clear eyes towards Iwate Prefecture with deep affection.
Besides, sitting here quietly admiring a handsome young man was certainly more comfortable than sweating out on the field.
Amidst the mixed feelings of the audience, Dubian Che stepped forward at a leisurely pace.
With a face of striking handsomeness and poise, he manifested the confidence of taking the national number one spot.
’Just like a quote from Orison Marden: Some people possess a special magic power, they always believe in their own abilities before they start anything, overcoming all hardships and obstacles, until victory.’
Dubian Che, was just such a person.’ - inner monologue from Dubian Che.
After all, among the students of Goda High School, probably only he would go out of his way to read "Deng’s Success Study" and know of the quote by Orison Marden.
Maybe not.
Whenever, wherever, be wary of Mr. R—this quote is written on the back of his notebook.
While lost in his thoughts, Dubian Che had already ascended the stage.
He bowed to the principal, to the teachers lined up against the wall, then approached the podium.
"Hello everyone, I am Dubian Che from Class 1-4."
"I thank the principal for giving me this opportunity to speak. Reflecting on my arrival in the vibrant cherry blossom season this spring, I, just like everyone here, sat below and watched as the freshman representative, Kiyono Lin, made her speech."
"Since that time, I’ve been thinking: Why isn’t it me standing there? What makes me any less qualified?"
"Later I found out the person in question was the young miss of the Kiyono family."
Laughter erupted from below.
Kiyono Lin, hugging her knees, remained impassive, her obsidian eyes fixed intently on the podium.
"Of course, that’s a joke. Before joining the club, I didn’t know Kiyono."
"To save money, I took a JR train to Tokyo, with many transfers, I ended up at the wrong platform. When Kiyono was scheduled to speak as the freshman representative, I was probably eating a bento at the station."
Laughter rose again.
"I’ll stop talking about Kiyono now, else someone will say this new freshman representative is too arrogant, constantly mocking the former one."
"Before coming onstage, the principal asked me to share some learning experiences, which I’ve prepared and am happy to share with all of you."
The crowd finally paid attention, as after all, it was an academic high school and everyone had an innate desire for effective study methods.
"I earned the national number one spot simply by being clever, that’s all."
Dubian Che left the podium, bowed to the audience, and turned to leave the stage.
The gymnasium fell silent.
"Clap clap clap." The crisp, monotonous applause came, as Mayi Asuka, with a light smile.
Then, the girls started clapping too, some standing up, trying to catch another glimpse of Dubian Che before he returned to his seat.
The boys jeered at each other, mouths saying ’this guy is so full of himself,’ while their hands reluctantly clapped along with the crowd.
By the time Dubian Che had returned to his seat and was being playfully beaten up by the boys in his class, the disciplinary teacher picked up the microphone.
"Next is the school hymn chorus, everyone please stand up."
The members of the Wind Instrument Club, already holding their instruments, stood up "whoosh," aiming their instruments at the students like weapons.
After everyone slowly stood up, the Wind Instrument Club Minister, Komatsu Misaki, lifted her conducting baton.
