Chapter 223: 127. Before the Cultural Festival (2)
After several days of clear skies, it suddenly started to rain.
Dubian Che woke up to the noisy sound of wind and rain, rubbed his bangs, and sweated a bit due to the stuffiness.
The low air pressure in the narrow rented room gave a faint feeling of chest tightness with each breath.
Dubian Che opened the window, and the strong wind instantly brought in the rainwater, quickly dampening the dry windowsill.
With a "snap," Dubian Che closed the window again before his clothes got wet and turned to pick up his cellphone from the table.
The time was 5:46 AM, and there was a text message from the Meteorological Agency.
"The strong typhoon No. 14 is moving northward from the East Sea, gradually shifting eastward. Early this morning Tokyo entered the range of the typhoon. Residents are advised to minimize outings, and working individuals must take care."
Dubian Che wondered whether typhoons deliberately opposed students.
On weekdays, from Monday to Friday, it always stood them up by either changing course to another region or coming and going at night, never giving students the chance to have a day off;
or it would just strike on the already restful Saturday and Sunday.
However, from the progress of the filming by the Human Observation Department, this seemed to be the best arrangement.
He hoped that the classes and clubs that were counting on Saturday and Sunday to prepare for the Cultural Festival could stay home safely, not rushing to school through the storm.
"Could this also be the will of God Kiyono?"
"But even if you can’t leave your house and have to stay home to edit the film, there’s no need to make the entire Tokyo keep you company, Kiyono."
Dubian Che looked at the luxury apartment in the distant storm and silently prayed for clear weather in his heart.
The storm continued, it seemed God Kiyono wasn’t planning to fulfill the wish of her only believer.
In that case, Dubian Che had to alter his morning workout to do push-ups at home while mentally reviewing Spanish vocabulary to enhance his memory.
After finishing his workout and showering, he received a phone call from home.
His mother said that their place wasn’t affected for the time being, however, according to the Meteorological Agency, the typhoon was going to continue moving northeast, and Iwate Prefecture was expected to face a torrential downpour by evening.
There was no food in the rental, Dubian Che mostly ate at school or out.
He read at home until noon, but hunger became unbearable, so he decided to brave the rain to get to the convenience store.
Once outside, the sound of the rain intensified, as if it were smashing down from the sky. The flimsy umbrella he bought from the convenience store gave in after just three seconds.
Completely drenched, Dubian Che looked at the bare skeleton of the umbrella in his hand and started singing in the deserted alley.
"Love is like the blue sky and white clouds, clear skies for miles, suddenly a storm... ptooey!"
He spat out the rainwater, wiped his face, and continued toward the convenience store.
Having paid such a steep price, it would be foolish not to stock up on food from the convenience store.
After all, it wasn’t his first time getting soaked in the rain.
"Sudden storms, no place to hide, always catch you off guard."
"There’s a simple question, what is love."
"Is it a kind of flavor, or an attraction, from the day I first fell in love, first it’s sweet, and then immediately there are storms."
As he sang, Dubian Che had a bad premonition.
All the way here, many shop windows were covered in tape to prevent them from shattering and causing injuries.
That was not important, the dire part was them all being closed.
’Could it be that the convenience store is also closed?’ Dubian Che couldn’t sing anymore.
He could handle a literal storm, but was he about to face a storm on the path to getting food?
When he arrived at the usual convenience store, the one that’s open 24 hours, the one that would stay open even during a magnitude 5 earthquake, it was closed.
Dubian Che went hungry all day.
Since September, he had been busy preparing for the Cultural Festival and had no time to watch the news or even chat with Kunii Shuichi and the others.
Otherwise, he would’ve known about the typhoon ahead of time and stocked up on supplies!
By evening, all TV stations aired continuous warnings, except Tokyo TV which was showing "Delicious Recipes for East Sea Style Chilled Noodles."
Starving, Dubian Che didn’t know whether he was trying to quench his hunger by watching the show or training his will, but he watched the entire program.
Early Sunday morning, the first thing Dubian Che did upon waking up: he drew back the curtains.
It was gloomy, a thick layer of rain clouds covered Tokyo’s sky, and thin threads of rain continuously fell from the clouds while the strong wind bent the trees lining the roads.
"Damn it!"
Dubian Che skipped his morning workout and went back to sleep.
During the day: reading, watching the rain, watching TV, watching the rain, sleeping, watching the rain...
By 9 PM, the rain finally lightened up.
It was a mild rain that didn’t require an umbrella, enveloping Tokyo like mist.
Having been hungry for nearly two days was no doubt like a super typhoon for a sixteen-year-old who insisted on exercising.
Dubian Che’s steps wobbled as he headed to the convenience store.
Lights shone on the streets, and although not all shops were open, many had begun their business.
As he saw the lights of the convenience store from afar, Dubian Che found even the insects attracted by the light endearing.
The convenience store was empty...
"Why are you here?" Dubian Che looked at the hat-wearing, detective-dressed beautiful girl in front of him.
The girl paused while putting two boxed meals into her basket, then nonchalantly put one back, pressed down on the brim of her hat, and turned toward the automatic checkout machine.
"Hey."
"What do you want?" Kiyono Lin turned around, annoyed, and said with a prickly tone, "Can’t you see I don’t feel like greeting you right now?"
