Chapter 209: 123. Executive Committee (1)
September 5th, Saturday.
Dressed carefully in her blouse and pleated skirt, Kiyono Lin sat on the bed pulling on her knee-high socks and adjusting them to a comfortable position before she took her backpack and SLR camera and left the apartment.
Her backpack was a bit heavy; it contained "Storyboard Script Design" and "Grandmaster Shots — 100 Advanced Techniques for Shooting Blockbusters on a Low Budget."
The morning air was cool, yet despite it being autumn, the temperature hadn’t dropped just yet, which didn’t feel cold but instead was refreshing.
She hadn’t gone to school; she had woken up earlier than usual and headed near Shibuya Station in search of potential filming locations.
As she brushed past people walking their dogs and captured a motorbike laden with goods nearly tipping over as it turned a corner, Kiyono Lin smiled.
She had anticipated that the heavy load along with the speed might cause a spill!
She had captured a decent slice of life scene.
Stepping outside and already hitting paydirt, she approached a narrow alley with a keen expectation. The alley was an uphill path with dense steps, flanked by a residential area where the scent of fried eggs hung in the air.
Voices came from across the alley where a few elderly people were exercising in the morning.
Because the path was really narrow, she had to stand amidst the potted plants of a homeowner’s garden to let them pass.
The elderly smiled at her kindly.
"Nowadays, girls still know how to be polite."
"That’s right, that boy is so ill-mannered."
"Didn’t he say he’s from the countryside? From a place just like Hokkaido."
Watching the energetic seniors capable of judging others disappear around the corner of the alley, Kiyono Lin continued to ascend the steps.
Upon exiting the alley, the view suddenly opened up to reveal a shrine.
A flock of pigeons pecked at offerings in front of the sailor’s quarters; the stairway alley she had climbed was to the left of the shrine.
With the idea that this place might just make a good filming spot, Kiyono Lin headed towards the shrine and only when she got closer did she notice another long flight of steps directly in front of it.
At the topmost corner of the steps, a sweaty young man sat, sipping from a bottle of Ramune soda.
Kiyono Lin couldn’t help but smile, capturing the scene with her SLR.
His profile bathed in the morning sun, devastatingly handsome enough to take one’s breath away; even the normally grimy sweat seemed endearing.
With the shot taken, she strolled over and gazed down at him from on high.
"Good morning."
The boy remained seated, his upper body turned towards her, his head tilted slightly upward, "To suddenly hear such a nice voice, I thought a shrine maiden had come out from the shrine, but it turned out to be Lord Kiyono."
While saying this, the young man’s gaze kept drifting towards her skirt, so Kiyono Lin chose to sit down.
Making sure she wasn’t exposing anything, she sat on the steps at a distance that maintained some space between them.
"The old people I passed just now were talking about you," she said with certainty.
"Old people? What old people?"
A lie. After making this subconscious judgment in her mind, Kiyono Lin continued, "Three elderly ladies, probably over sixty."
"I didn’t see anyone." The boy looked puzzled, "The shrine priest said that lately the pigeons haven’t been eating well; it might be because there have been spirits roaming nearby. Kiyono, you haven’t seen something you shouldn’t have, have you?"
"I suddenly feel like drinking vegetable juice."
"Can you go get it yourself this time? I’m really tired, look at all this sweat."
"If you plan on being someone who doesn’t keep promises, it’s all the same to me if I go."
"...You’ve got a point."
The boy stood up, supporting his knees, and walked to the vending machine to buy the vegetable juice.
This was his punishment for lying just now.
Kiyono Lin looked out into the distance, where utility poles crisscrossed the narrow street, fresh green leaves peeked out from the residential area, two girls in Kendo uniforms chatted as they walked towards the station.
On the wide-angle mirrors at the corner, a red taxi with an ’Adachi’ license plate plate could be seen driving into the distance.
"Here."
"Thanks." Kiyono Lin saved the video and placed her SLR on her knees, taking the vegetable juice handed to her by the young man.
They both watched the distant scene silently for a while until the boy finished his soda first, breaking the silence.
"Why are you here? Stalking me?"
Kiyono Lin’s lips released the straw she had been lightly biting, "Before you say that, could you refrain from your criminal behavior and stop staring at my legs?"
"What are you talking about? I’m just wondering why this part of your sock is wet."
Though not entirely truthful, it wasn’t a lie either.
Following his gaze, Kiyono Lin saw some faint water stains on her knee-high socks, barely visible unless one looked closely.
It must have been when she was making way for the elderly and accidentally brushed against a watered plant pot.
"Thanks for letting me know, but please keep your disgusting gaze off me."
"Who cares, really. I’m leaving."
The young man got to his feet, dusted off his behind, walked down the steps, and disappeared into the mouth of the alley.

After going home and taking a shower, Dubian Che changed into his school uniform and took the train to school.
Even though it was a Saturday, whether it was for club activities or the Executive Committee, he had reasons he couldn’t avoid attending.
Was it possible he had become less happy since obtaining the system?
He had a lot of money and a beautiful girlfriend, yet it had been so long since he spent weekends out with friends, was unable to earn reassuring money from part-time jobs, and couldn’t even go home during the summer holidays.
Dubian Che glanced at the system that he almost always ignored; it had been minimized into a transparent button.
Hoping it would sense his mournful mood and then be a bit more sensible next month, conjuring up useful items and skills.
