Chapter 183: 112. Cultural Festival (1)_2
"The band, the band, didn’t I just say? Just by doing this, I swear upon Shibuya Station, no, the whole Shinjuku District, our club can absolutely take first place in the ’Best Activity’ votes at the Cultural Festival!"
Kiyono Lin clapped the hardcover book shut with a "snap" and gave him a chilly look, "Didn’t I just mention? I don’t like standing on stage."
"So... Goda Miss Campus Beauty Contest? I can swear upon the whole of Tokyo for this one. If it’s not popular, I’ll immediately let loose a torrential downpour capable of flooding the entire city, transforming the entire Kantou Plain into..."
"Next." Kiyono Lin cut him off emotionlessly.
"A stage play? ’Romeo and Juliet’? I’ll direct, write the script, handle the props, and you and Meiji will be the leads. This is big! I’ll guarantee with my hometown Iwate Prefecture that no one could resist two beautiful girls whispering sweet nothings to each other!"
Kiyono Lin didn’t immediately object, but instead rested her chin in her hand, smiling lightly, "If you can persuade Jiutiao Meiji, I have no objections."
"...Let’s consider that a backup plan."
"Anything else?" Kiyono Lin lost interest, glancing at the hardcover book in her hands.
Dubian Che racked his brains; maid cafés, haunted houses—everything was excluded.
"With things as they are, we can only rely on the power of the club president now!" Dubian Che clenched his teeth, "Let’s make a movie!"
"A movie? You can convince Jiutiao Meiji?"
"Even if she doesn’t star in it, it’s not a problem. The Wind Instrument Club has a full eighty-six background players, plus Kunii Shuichi and Saito Keisuke, we’ve got more than enough people! Although we lack the power of the president, we can definitely make a movie that transcends ’The Adventures of Asahina Mikuru’! Maybe it could even be screened in Shinjuku District theaters and make a fortune!"
"’The Adventures of Asahina Mikuru’? A movie made by high schoolers? Is it any good?" Kiyono Lin asked, skeptical.
"It’s not a matter of good or bad, it’s, it’s, it’s really that kind of rare film, which encapsulates the secrets of the world within it." Dubian Che wasn’t lying, but he wasn’t entirely honest either.
"Can it really have that much depth?" Kiyono Lin mused.
"Absolutely. Although it hasn’t been shown in movie theaters, it’s quite famous among youths. With that in mind, doesn’t it seem valuable to transcend?"
"We also have to focus on the national competition; we probably won’t have so much time to make a movie."
"What’s the problem! Anyway, members of the Wind Instrument Club also have to participate in their own class activities. There’s no chance of ensemble practice before the end of the Cultural Festival, and neither of us need to train. For leading and supporting roles, couldn’t we just find people willing to help out as extras?"
Kiyono Lin thought for a moment and then nodded in agreement.
"That’s great!"
This is more like it! A youthful romantic comedy should be just like this!
Let those outmoded and boring surveys go to hell!
"I have one condition."
"I’m okay with ten."
"Ara, you’re so polite? Then let’s make it ten."
"Hold on, hold on, your answer is too weird. I was just being polite!"
Kiyono Lin smiled beautifully at the corners of her mouth, taking mercy on Dubian Che, "My condition is that I will direct and write the screenplay."
"You don’t want to be the lead actress?"
"Not interested." Kiyono Lin pulled out a brand-new notebook from the drawer, "Now that we’ve decided to make a movie, the first thing we have to do is...."
"Settle on the script, cast, and borrow equipment?"
"No. Watch ’The Adventures of Asahina Mikuru’ first."
"Kiyono." Dubian Che took a deep breath.
"What?"
"I’m the kind of person who likes to blabber nonsense, say strange things, and tease you. But there’s one thing I hope you remember: no matter what I say, deep down in my heart, I’ll always be your forever friend."
"Why spout something that gives people the chills all of a sudden?" Kiyono Lin clutched the hem of her pleated skirt, revealing a pair of slender white legs beneath.
"Nothing. Just thinking that making a movie might not be so reliable after all. There’s a feeling we won’t have enough time to make a satisfying movie in one month."
"Of course a normal movie wouldn’t be possible, but twenty to thirty minutes is no problem at all, ’The Adventures of Asahina Mikuru’ is longer..." Kiyono Lin suddenly realized.
She let go of her skirt, her icy gaze shooting towards Dubian Che, "What’s the deal with that movie?"
"Kiyono, Kiyono, Miss Kiyono, I apologize for all my mistakes, but please continue with the movie! My whole life is bet on this event!"
"Mr. Dubian’s life really isn’t worth much, is it?" Miss Kiyono said with a cold laugh.
"I was wrong." Dubian Che was quite practiced at apologizing by now, his tone especially insincere.
"I’ve decided, the movie’s name will be ’Dubian Che’s Adventure.’"
"I don’t have any superpowers at the moment! And besides plagiarism, at least change it up a bit!" Dubian Che hastily said.
Kiyono Lin ignored the wailing Dubian Che, lost in thought, and said, "As for the script... An entity from another world, for some reason, reincarnated into this world and became a boy named Dubian Che."
"... Miss Kiyono."
"What? Not bad, right?"
"Could you please not have powers weirder than mine? It’s quite a blow to me."
"I’ve just mentioned the beginning. I haven’t really thought through the actual unfolding of the story. You can completely wait until the movie comes out and then worship me."
"No, I’m already a follower of the Kiyono Divine Sect. Please grant me the power to change the world, instead of pondering how to handle girls at school all day."
"Then let’s make you into that weird Card Face to Fight. The setting is in Shinjuku District? No, since it involves superpowers, it’s better to have more locations. However, this brings up the issue of funding—looks like we need to seek sponsorship."
Kiyono Lin looked up at Dubian Che, who was praying to her with his hands clasped around fruit taken from the refrigerator.
"What the hell are you doing? Forget it. Congratulations, Mr. Dubian, your looks may finally be of use."
In the afternoon, Komatsu Misaki distributed the music scores for the School Festival performance.
They were the opening theme "Red Lotus" from "Demon Slayer," the ending theme "unlasting" from "Sword Art Online," and the opening theme "Red Lotus Arrow" from "Attack on Titan."
Two competition tunes, plus these three popular anime songs, along with introductions and breaks, added up perfectly to thirty minutes.
For Dubian Che, an afternoon was enough time to practice his part well, with his main focus on the movie that Kiyono Lin was about to start shooting.
After all, it was his suggestion. Even though the script wasn’t what he hoped for—"The Lovey-Dovey Affairs of Kiyono Lin and Jiutiao Meijie"—he still had to take it seriously.
Before the Academy Festival ended, the Wind Instrument Club’s practice would finish at five in the afternoon, and whether to stay and continue practicing was up to individual willingness.
Kiyono Lin and Dubian Che both left promptly at five, beginning to prepare for the Human Observation Department’s School Festival activity.
They went to the riverside where Dubian Che often practiced the oboe.
It was summer, the surroundings were filled with thriving weeds and unnamed wildflowers blooming everywhere. Reeds, almost the height of Kiyono Lin, swayed comfortably in the evening breeze by the riverbank.
The two sat on an old bench.
"What kind of place did you choose?" Kiyono Lin said with some dissatisfaction.
"This place is good, isn’t it? Quiet, with a wide view."
"There are mosquitoes."
"No problem," Dubian Che said indifferently. "They all know me; they won’t suck my blood anymore."
"I’m talking about me."
"That is a problem. Your blood looks very tasty," Dubian Che agreed, nodding.
"How would you know?"
"Your legs make one want to take a bite at first glance. Don’t you ever feel that impulse when you take a shower or look in the mirror?"
"No, I don’t have such impulses at all," Kiyono Lin said, her gaze icy as she stared at Dubian Che who was sizing up her legs.
"You’re lying, right? Indeed, Miss Kiyono, you are very strange, different from ordinary people."
"Dubian Che, I will make sure to treat you well in the script," Kiyono Lin said deliberately.
"... Can I refuse the role? Usually, the real protagonists are the ones rushing around in the background."
"What do you think?"
"Yes!"
Kiyono Lin let out a cold laugh. "I will make you perform your favorite transformation move. The location will be Shibuya Station, in front of the Shibuya 109 building."
Shibuya Station, the Island Country’s station with the highest passenger traffic;
Shibuya Crossing, the world’s busiest intersection.
"There’s a coffee shop nearby that overlooks Shinjuku, with a classy environment. How about we go there? My treat."
