Chapter 174: 109. Kantou Tournament (1)
On the third day of intensive training, after the ensemble practice was over.
"That’s it for today’s training. When you all head back today, you’re free to go straight home."
"Yes!"
Kiyono Lin looked around, her gaze settling on Dubian Che, whose eyelids kept drooping.
"Tomorrow will continue to be high intensity, so it’s best to stay at home and rest well. With only five days left until the Kantou competition, we can’t have anyone dozing off during practice."
"Yes!"
"Mr. Dubian?"
"There’s a reason I’ve been nodding off all day." Dubian Che lifted his foot, pointing to a mosquito bite, "Last night there was this mosquito that kept ’buzzing’, and I had to..."
Before he could finish, Kiyono Lin had already looked away: "Dismissed."
"..." Dubian Che had forgotten this woman could see through lies.
’NPCs have skills even more amazing than players, I definitely got something wrong here,’ he complained inwardly, perking up to start packing up the music stands and chairs.
Carrying instruments, packing up luggage, the Wind Instrument Club took the school bus back to Shinjuku District, concluding the three-day, two-night intensive training.
Even as someone who was accustomed to staying up late and getting up early, and maintained regular exercise, Dubian Che felt a wave of fatigue when he had only gone to the girls’ dormitory for a while the night before and had crawled around on the floor. When he got home, he kicked off his shoes casually, entered the genkan, turned on the air conditioning, and sat down on the floor with a satisfied groan.
The two goldfish he had caught during the summer festival activities were now dead in the fish tank, their bellies swollen and turned upward.
Dubian Che stared at them for a while, then leisurely took out his phone and snapped a picture to send to Jiutiao Meijie.
[They’ve passed away]
[Got it]
Five days passed quickly, and soon it was the afternoon before the day of the Kantou competition.
Training ended early in preparation for tomorrow’s competition.
When Dubian Che returned to his rental place, he received a delivery from his hometown: a duck.
The duck had been raised by his dad in the rice paddy; the original plan was to kill and eat it when he came home, but because of the Wind Instrument Club, he ended up spending the entire summer in Tokyo.
"Ducks that eat weeds and pests are all killed, I guess it’s almost time to harvest the rice," Dubian Che muttered to himself, staring at the duck tied up with string.
Suddenly he felt a headache coming on; starting from scratch to kill a duck was a very troublesome matter—draining the blood, plucking the feathers, and so on.
But it wasn’t realistic to either raise the duck or sell it.
After some thought, Dubian Che took out his phone.
"What’s up?" Jiutiao Meijie’s voice came over.
"My folks sent me a duck from home, do you want to come over for dinner tonight?" Having a guest would give a host the momentum to fuss over the kitchen.
"A duck?" Jiutiao Meijie was taken aback for a moment, "Why send that over? Don’t they have it everywhere?"
"Rice paddy duck, it’s more unusual for the average Tokyo resident, right? So, you coming or not?"
"You really want me to come over to your place for that?" Jiutiao Meijie’s tone was contemptuous yet flirtatious.
"Hey, hey, don’t get the wrong idea. It’s purely because I absolutely don’t want to deal with the duck by myself. If you come over for dinner, then I’ll have the drive to cook."
"Is that so?"
"Of course. Without guests, who would bother killing a duck? I absolutely don’t have the sleazy thought of ’if my girlfriend agrees to come over for dinner, it means she agrees we can do that kind of stuff’!"
Jiutiao Meijie’s laughter on the other end of the phone made it clear she didn’t believe a word Dubian Che said.
Truly headache-inducing.
If it were Kiyono Lin, she would definitely know that Dubian Che was a hospitable host without any inappropriate thoughts.
"Fine, I’ll come over at eight. Make it clean."
"Clean? Meiji, I’m really not some lecherous scumbag, I..."
"I was talking about the duck."
"Ah? Oh."
The phone hung up to Jiutiao Meijie’s laughter, and she seemed to be in a good mood. Had she recently closed a few deals, making a few billion dollars?
Dubian Che thought of Ying Sida, who had given him a Lamborghini the first time they met; the lives of the wealthy were unimaginable.
Since Jiutiao Meijie had agreed to come for dinner, Dubian Che decided not to be lazy, boiling water to prepare to kill the duck.
He couldn’t cook, so he planned to make duck soup for hotpot.
He asked his mom for the steps to make the soup and began simmering the duck carcass in the pot, then went out to buy other ingredients.
On the afternoon of August 24, it was extremely hot outside.
The asphalt roads and residential roofs shimmered under the sun, and the few pedestrians on the street stuck close to the shade as they walked.
Dubian Che finally stumbled into the mall, breathing a sigh of relief as sweat drenched him.
He stood for a while in front of the air conditioner vent before wandering over to the vegetable section of the mall.
High-grade Wagyu beef, shiitake mushrooms, leeks, crown daisy, baby cabbage, enoki mushrooms, selection aplenty but in modest quantities.
Remembering that Jiutiao Meijie liked salmon, Dubian Che placed the mall’s most expensive plate of salmon into his basket.
Finally, grabbing a bottle of orange juice and paying the bill, he headed back to the rental house drenched in sweat again.
In this weather, cooking alone really wasn’t appealing, let alone slaughtering a duck.
After a shower and changing his clothes, seeing that the time was about right, he began rinsing rice, cooking, and arranging dishes.
Once it was dark, before Jiutiao Meijie’s arrival, he bought a camping gas stove from the shop.
He placed the gas stove on the low, round table, set the simmered duck soup pot on top, and the other dishes conveniently filled the round table.
Holding his phone high, he found the right angle and took a photo, sending it to both his mom and Jiutiao Meijie.
Dubian Che turned on the TV, and while sipping orange juice, watched an NHK documentary about harsh weather at the northernmost tip of Hokkaido—a luxury he allowed himself after having too much money to know what to do with, paying for the subscription.
