Chapter 153: 101. Leisurely and Scorching Summer Sounds_4

Dubian Che glanced at Yuzao Haomei whose shoulders were still shaking and felt bad about it.

Making a girl cry really isn’t something a man should do.

When the car reached its destination and they got out, Dubian Che apologized to her with red eyes.

Yuzao Haomei said nothing and walked straight to the truck to retrieve her trombone.

Dubian Che, helpless with women, followed and helped her unload her instrument.

The group, each with their own instruments, followed the staff to the prep room and tuned with a tuner.

"Is everyone in tune?" Suddenly, the impeccably dressed Kiyono Lin in a sleek black suit, looking like a beautiful youth, entered the room.

Her snow-white, translucent skin was even more sanctified against the black of her suit, and though it was summer, her well-dressed appearance didn’t give off any sense of heat.

Her jet-black hair, shiny as 0.5 mm lead powder, tied in a ponytail, swinging with her movements, her slender and fragile figure, and her handsome face had a fatal attraction to girls.

Girls from the Wind Instrument Club who usually didn’t like her were now blushing and whispering to each other, "So handsome!", "I could die!" or exclaiming in surprise, "How come I never noticed before!"

There were even absurd lines like "Even handsomer than Scum Dubian," which were obviously lies at first hearing.

The attention of everyone made Kiyono Lin involuntarily look down at her outfit and then, without much concern, she asked again, "Is everyone ready?"

"Ready!"

"Sorry, I’m not yet!"

"Hurry up," said Kiyono Lin, "We need to rehearse the beginning a few more times before we go on stage."

"Yes!"

Everyone knew that if the first note of a brass instrument was off, it was nearly impossible to recover. No one objected to Kiyono Lin’s suggestion.

Dubian Che played a teasingly long note on his oboe and said to Kiyono Lin who looked over, "You look sharp, Mr. Kiyono."

Kiyono Lin glanced at him with an ’are you done yet’ look, and turned her gaze elsewhere, but the corner of her mouth lifted in a barely visible arc.

"This handsomeness, among all the guys who have met me, except for myself, no one can match you. I, Dubian, hereby claim you as the handsomest!"

Kiyono Lin couldn’t handle him and scolded irritably, "Instead of spouting nonsense, you’d better prepare yourself."

"How heartless! Do you know how hard it is to get my approval?"

Kiyono Lin tapped her arm impatiently, about to speak, but saw Dubian Che already with the reed of his oboe in his mouth, posing as if he didn’t want to be disturbed while practicing.

She pinched the bridge of her nose, unable to do anything with him.

"The contestants from Tokyo Metropolitan Goda High School, your time has come."

After the staff’s notice, the hopes for the practice session to never end were dashed.

Before going on stage, Kiyono Lin looked at everyone, "Don’t be nervous, just perform at the level we practice at, and I assure you: we will definitely make it to the Kantou Competition."

"Yes!" the group responded loudly, both nervous and uneasy.

"Mr. Dubian, do you have anything to say?" Kiyono Lin suddenly asked.

Dubian Che pointed at himself, "Me?"

"Yes," Kiyono Lin nodded, "You’re the key soloist, say a few words to everyone."

"Well..." Dubian Che was about to roast the group to fuel their hateful energy, but he was stopped by Kiyono Lin’s stern look.

"Uh... I don’t have much to say," Dubian Che hesitated, "I’ll sing a song for everyone instead."

Before anyone reacted, Dubian Che began to sing with the voice Kiyono Lin had deemed hopeless.

"Shibuya Hills, the crows flying over the school, our alma mater, Goda."

Whether they hated him, liked him, or ignored him, all members of the Wind Instrument Club sang along to Goda High School’s anthem.

"Goda!"

"Good luck!"

The group ascended the stage, each taking their position in their trenches.

"Up next, performance number thirty-three, Tokyo Metropolitan Goda High School."

"The piece to be performed is ’Prosperous Four Seasons’ composed by Kawashima Akira, conducted by Kiyono Lin."

As the announcer’s voice faded, the bright lights flooded the entire stage.

Kiyono Lin bowed to the audience, and as applause erupted, so did murmurs of "Such a young conductor; it’s the first time seeing one."

Kiyono Lin looked up and stepped onto the conductor’s podium.

At the same time, the audience quieted, all extraneous noises vanished instantly, and every gaze was fixed on the stage.

In this silence, an unbelievable fervor filled the concert hall.

Kiyono Lin lifted her baton, and everyone raised their instruments. She looked at each face in Group A, and each one looked back at her.

Finally, she set her gaze on Dubian Che.

Their eyes locked, and in that moment, she brought down her baton.

The melody of the flute solo layered upon itself, and the music sheet read, ’Crescendo the notes!’

Then the deep, rich tones of the tenor horn pulsed through the air; the score said, ’Listen to the melody! Listen to the melody! Listen to the melody!’

The tenor horn caught up with the pace of the piece, marked with ’Tend to lower pitch!’

’Watch the conductor!’ ’Make Scum Dubian look good!’ ’The third day of being mocked’...

The notes scribbled on the music sheets had become dense, obscuring the sheet itself; the tune was now memorized by heart.

With June and July passing into summer, even the initial notes had started to fade.

Kiyono Lin’s hands came together, and instant silence filled the concert hall.

She slowly waved the baton, and the oboe solo began!

A soulful and clear sound that was paralyzing burst forth!

Everyone involuntarily swallowed, sat up straight with trembling hearts and goosebumps.

At that moment, no one in the Wind Instrument Club cursed Dubian Che for making a mistake.

A scorching nervousness seared through their throats.

Yuzao Haomei, Hanaoka Asako, Mayi Asuka, Komatsu Misaki, Miyazaki on the saxophone, Ishiyama on the flute... all had one thought:

To the national competition!
