Chapter 229: 0227 Escape, response, come to me
When the police officers from Sabin City Police Station and the investigators from the FBI were conducting checkpoints on all roads entering and leaving Sabin City, Gap had actually already left the city.
He was placed inside a specially modified oil drum and sent out along with other oil drums. The drum had two layers, with the upper layer filled with the same liquid chemicals as the other drums and the lower layer big enough to fit an adult.
This industrial packaging drum was at least two meters high, with a diameter of over half a meter, more than enough space to fit a person.
The police and investigators did intercept this vehicle, but firstly, it had legal chemical transport permits and related shipment documents. Secondly, the driver cooperatively accepted the inspection, which caused them to let their guard down.
The police and investigators searched many oil drums but found nothing unusual, so they had to let the vehicle pass.
Once the transport vehicle left Sabin City and entered the interstate highway, it quickly disappeared from sight. Gap successfully evaded the police blockade, but he did not feel any relief; he felt the situation was much worse than he imagined.
The Ristone Group’s basic position in Sabin City had completely collapsed due to conflicts with the Governor and the Mayor, making Gap a very critical point.
He held the key secrets to the Ristone Group’s altered accounts, and if he fell into the hands of the FBI, he could easily reveal the hidden secrets in those altered records.
Would the President Neo let go of such an important person?
Or, did he really have a chance to "flee" abroad?
The long journey and the risk of crossing the border meant that any mistake at any point could bring irreversible consequences.
Not to mention that even if he did cross the border, as an illegal immigrant in another country, he could die on the streets without anyone noticing.
At this point, Gap had already started to regret. This was a habitual regret that often happened to well-educated individuals because they thought too much.
Some say that thinking is the greatest obstacle to action, and while this may not necessarily be true, it’s not completely false either. The more one thinks, the more thoroughly one complicates matters, but sometimes reality doesn’t follow the script.
As difficulties mount, one becomes more desperate, and regret is entirely normal.
The vehicle transporting the oil drums stopped at a highway motel, where several workers, already waiting, unloaded some of the drums, including the one hiding Gap.
After finishing their task, the workers left with the vehicle. It all seemed like normal work, with no one knowing that one of these drums was different from the others.
Soon after, in a daze, Gap felt the drum rolling, then being laid down, with metallic scraping sounds coming from the bottom. They were opening the drum!
He found himself temporarily confined to a room on the second floor of the motel, with someone watching from outside. Although these people claimed to escort him out of the Federation to flee abroad, from Gap’s perspective, they seemed more like they were controlling him.
The increasingly tense atmosphere made Gap restless in the room. He searched through all the drawers, but not even a handy tool, let alone a screw, could be found. They had preemptively cleaned out the room.
Sitting on the bedside in a daze, Gap suddenly and silently removed his glasses. He effortlessly took a lens out of the frame with his fingers, placed the lens convex side up on the floor, and stepped on it lightly!
A few minutes later, Neo, who was using alcohol to try to force himself to sleep, was suddenly interrupted by a ringing phone, rendering all his efforts futile.
He energetically approached the phone, waiting until it rang twice more in his hand before calmly picking up the call.
"It’s me..."
His voice remained as deep and firm as ever, unaffected by the recent situation. He hoped everyone could be as composed as he was, without panic or exposing weaknesses.
But he was destined for disappointment, as his emotions erupted within seconds, releasing everything he had been suppressing for days.
"Useless!"
"You sons of bitches are useless, do you understand?"
"You’re all useless!"
"Even dogs are more useful than you; at least they bite, while you can’t do anything right!"
He kicked over the delicate table holding the phone. It was about a foot square and four feet high (about 1.2 meters), a finely crafted phone table.
With a wooden structure and luxurious decorations, this piece could fetch around five to six hundred bucks and primarily served to hold the phone.
The phone fell to the floor with the table’s collapse, and perhaps due to some issue, the line suddenly went silent.
Neo picked up the phone and continued venting his rage, behaving like an enraged and foolish gorilla intent on destroying the world. He beat the receiver violently, seemingly trying to hang it back up, but he only kept smashing it down and picking it up again.
Finally, using all his might, he hurled the phone to the ground, putting an end to the brief life of the thousand-dollar telephone made from special materials.
Perhaps because the phone was completely destroyed, the phone on the other side of the hall rang again. He glared at the telephone and quickly walked over.
Just as he picked up the phone, a woman’s shadow appeared on the second-floor corridor, followed by a questioning voice, "What happened, dear? I heard some noise."
The fierce look in Neo’s eyes gradually faded. He calmed down his emotions, his voice not much different from before, "Nothing, something fell. The maid will take care of everything."
After the shadow upstairs disappeared, he put the receiver to his ear and listened to the person inside apologizing for his stupidity.
Yes, Gap actually ran off under tight security. The guards said he got hold of something sharp from somewhere and escaped while they were dozing off.
One of the guards spotted him but got his face slashed, ultimately allowing Gap to successfully escape.
And all of this was because the guards were too careless. They did not quite believe a bookish guy could escape right under their noses, nor did they believe this bookish guy had such courage.
After a moment of silence, Neo glanced at his bleeding left hand and his voice became somewhat colder, "I don’t want to see him again, nor hear any news about him. Understand what I mean?"
After hanging up the phone, Neo called the maid to bandage his wound. A little later, he made a call to a friend of his.
It’s time for those who owe him favors to repay him!
The next morning, Lynch received a call from Vera, hoping he could come over.
Such a request Lynch naturally wouldn’t refuse. It must be said that during the time Vera worked for him, she managed his accounts very clearly and responsibly. He could trust the work to this woman rather than other ambitious or thoughtful men.
When Lynch arrived at Vera’s house, he noticed someone watching the place, but these people were not the police, nor those investigators. They were not official people.
As for how he knew... in the Federation, everyone can clearly distinguish who is the police, who is an investigator, and who is a bad guy!
Upon entering the house, Lynch noticed something was amiss. Logically speaking, with Gap missing, the police should be treating this place as important, if not monitoring it 24/7, at least leaving some police officers here.
If Gap suddenly returned, they could immediately control him, but from the current situation, there were no police here.
Coupled with the people outside, some things had already changed.
After sitting down, Vera expressed her concerns, "Until this morning, there were still police guarding here, but just a while ago, they suddenly all left, and more people appeared outside. I’m a bit worried."
"Where’s your mother?" Lynch looked around and asked, remembering that Vera’s mother was recently staying here to help take care of Vera.
Vera explained, "She went back to take care of the kids."
It’s very common for both spouses to work. Sometimes they send their kids to full-day daycare or kindergarten, but often they let their parents take care of them. Paid people never care as well as relatives.
For several consecutive days, the old woman was here, and Vera’s father was going crazy, so they had to let the old woman go back first.
The house currently only had Vera, and it was very normal for her to feel uneasy. Anyone would feel uneasy at this time.
Lynch thought for a moment, then stood up and extended his hand, "If you don’t mind, you can stay at my place for a few days."
This invitation was a bit sudden, but Vera had no other choice.
Go to her parents’ place?
What if it endangers the kids?
Go to her siblings’ place?
They have their families, and they are not related to this issue.
In the Bail Federal, sometimes relations between relatives are not as close as between friends. At least friends interact more often, while relatives see each other rarely, except during the few pitiful annual holidays.
Go to Gap’s parents or siblings?
Gap is not a local; he is an outsider settled in Sabin City, employed by the Ristone Group.
A semi-housewife who not long ago had little social interaction, she didn’t have a large social circle, and Lynch had become one of her few choices.
Vera quickly agreed, perhaps feeling safer with Lynch. After packing her things, she left with Lynch’s car. Jack, who was driving, soon noticed someone following them and informed Lynch.
In the back seat, Lynch could clearly feel Vera becoming tense. She kept looking back and tightly held Lynch’s hand.
