Chapter 101: Chapter 96: So Many Bandits Refreshed? (Extra with Monthly Pass)
Two days later.
Outside the walls of the Restorer fortress, in the wilderness, patterns resembling ripples in water appeared.
An Eastern Barbarian bandit emerged from the chaotic time-space flux, looking around carefully.
Then, more bandits arrived in this historical slice, a total of thirty or forty people!
Their eyes were all pitch-black, and their bodies faintly emanated a dark aura.
Clearly, these were demons that roamed the time-space flux, having stumbled upon this place by accident.
The leading bandit was very tall, wearing a blood-red demon mask, and wielded a large naginata, his malevolent eyes scanning the surroundings.
"How strange, this is merely a small historical slice, yet it’s unobstructed...
"And moreover, there is a familiar aura here.
"It’s a slice that has been invaded before but has been retaken by the Restorers!
"But why haven’t the Restorers sealed off this slice? Fools!"
The demon in the ghost mask let out a proud, cold laugh, like a hungry wolf eyeing a piece of fresh, fat meat.
In the historical river that connects the ancient past with reality, historical slices are like icebergs floating on the surface, existing in three different states.
One is the pristine historical slice, never invaded by any demons; one is the historical slice that has been invaded and altered by demons; and the last is the historical slice retaken by the Restorers.
Historical slices themselves are subject to a dual-barrier limitation.
On one hand, only weaker demons can enter small historical slices. On the other, pristine historical slices have barriers—demons that enter can only possess the slice’s bandits or barbarian soldiers and slowly infiltrate and tamper.
Of course, once the tampering is successful, demons can flood in and completely occupy the slice. They can even establish new demon barriers, causing difficulties for the Restorers.
And when Restorers reclaim a historical slice, they would inevitably restore the original barriers, preventing demons from moving in and out freely.
But the situation with this historical slice was very special.
It was clearly a slice that had been retaken by the Restorers, yet no new barriers had been erected?
Was this not like undefended fat meat?
If it were a reinforced state, only a very few of these demons could infiltrate, and it wouldn’t necessarily be a rewrite. But now, they could directly charge in with banners waving!
As for the Restorers, they were unlikely to be here.
For demons knew that Restorers typically fought solo, proceeding to the next target after reclaiming one slice. Even if they were to remodel a historical slice, they would at most install illusions of the natives.
Without barriers, the fighting strength of the native inhabitants was essentially negligible.
"Charge! Kill them all!"
The bandit in the ghost mask shouted, and the other bandits drew their sabers, excitedly yelling!
Their target was clear, the small city ahead!
Obviously, it was just a small county town, its earthen defenses probably weren’t very strong, and it shouldn’t be too difficult to attack.
However, just then, they saw a tall, robust soldier with a rugged face, looking slightly bewildered, coming towards them.
The bandits hesitated for a moment, two of them subconsciously reached for their longbows.
Because they assumed that this native would surely take off running to go alert others.
What the bandits didn’t expect was that the soldier not only didn’t flee, he excitedly took down the shield and long spear on his back and charged at them!
This native was insane.
That was the first reaction of the demons.
The demon in the ghost mask chuckled and propped his naginata on the ground, nodding at two bandits beside him.
This small fry was of no interest for it to handle personally.
Two bandits with fierce expressions each drew their sabers, rushing forward to vie for the kill!
At this moment, Fan Cun’s heart was pounding with excitement.
He had wandered outside the city for half the day, almost thinking he would return without success when suddenly, he nabbed a group of big fish!
Unlike Zhao Haiping and the other players, Fan Cun preferred to operate alone.
The reason was simple: he didn’t want to share the reward money with anyone else.
Facing thirty or forty bandits, Fan Cun didn’t care in the slightest, for his goal was clear: to kill two and make a profit!
Even though resurrection cost money, the bounty on one bandit was enough to cover the loss. Killing two would be pure profit, bringing Fan Cun closer to his goal of acquiring new weapons and armor.
Besides, it was probably too late to run now. Even if he could escape and return, it would be a waste of time. Better to kill two bandits and die—effectively a quick return to the city.
An Eastern Barbarian’s saber had already slashed towards Zhao Haiping, it had taken the lead over another bandit by nearly an entire body’s length, clearly aiming to grab the reward of killing him.
For that saber strike, it felt very confident.
However, Fan Cun seemed to have guessed exactly how it would attack; the spear in his hand thrust out at an extremely tricky angle and pierced through the bandit’s chest first!
The Eastern Barbarian’s saber cut through the air, falling a few inches short in front of Fan Cun’s chest, hacking at nothing but emptiness.
Another bandit, upon seeing this, was shocked and quickly sprang forward, his Eastern Barbarian saber also slashing down toward Fan Cun!
But Fan Cun didn’t withdraw his spear; instead, he continued to press forward with the impaled bandit, his left hand raising his shield high to meet the oncoming saber of the other bandit.
Both bandits clearly didn’t expect a regular native of this historical slice to be so fiercely brave, and for a moment, they were utterly stunned, their sabers ineffective against the shield.
Fan Cun let go of the spear in his right hand and once again charged at the second bandit, raising his shield and tumbling into a scuffle with him!
The bandit tried to counterattack, after all, Fan Cun was unarmed at that moment, but before he could react, he felt his opponent reach to his waist, and the short blade at his side disappeared.
Then, the bandit felt a chill in his chest and, glancing down, saw his own short blade already in the hands of his opponent, stabbed into his chest!
The bandit’s eyes were filled with confusion.
Why... did this native seem to know the location of the short blade even better than me?
The motion of drawing the blade was so familiar as if it had been practiced countless times.
Enraged, the bandit leader wearing a ghost mask strode forward quickly, his large scythe-sword swinging down at the unsuspecting Fan Cun!
The strike was so powerful that Fan Cun’s infantry armor offered little protection, and he was cut down instantly.
But before he was hit, he flicked his right hand, hurling the short blade he had grabbed!
The bandit leader instinctively dodged, but soon realized the blade wasn’t thrown at him.
Looking back, he saw the bandit who had been pierced by the spear and had not yet died, now clutching at his throat and slowly falling to the ground.
The bandit leader looked furiously at Fan Cun, who lay on the ground, and saw the dying Fan Cun not showing any pain, but instead, a wild joy.
"Wait for me, you bastards! He who runs is a grandson!"
Fan Cun died with satisfaction.
...
A moment later, Fan Cun resurrected in town.
"Get some strong guys over here quick, there’s money to be made outside!"
Fan Cun ran out excitedly, shouting as he went.
The other players were somewhat confused, but after hearing him shout a few times, they caught on.
"What? A big wave of bandits has appeared outside the city? More than thirty?"
"Really? Weren’t there only a few scattered bandits that appeared before? How come there are so many this time?"
"There must be a mini-boss, right? Isn’t this a fortune?"
"Hurry up, let’s go!"
The players all got excited, and soon, dozens followed Fan Cun out of town, eagerly running towards the outskirts.
Because if they were late, others might snatch up the opportunity!
Up to now, Order Restored Fortress had been open for two days, and most players who liked to battle had participated in several demon-hunting activities, but the demons encountered were almost always just two or three at a time, and the appearance seemed purely random, hard to predict, leaving many players somewhat disinterested.
Sometimes a half-day would be wasted wandering outside without running into a single bandit, which felt like a waste of time, not as profitable as earning money through labor within the city.
But now, with more than thirty bandits, it was as if money had fallen on the ground, why not hurry and pick it up?
The armor and weapons sold by the town’s blacksmith were quite expensive; without some unexpected windfall, how could one afford them?
...
More than thirty bandits had already reached the outskirts of Shangdu.
The tall bandit leader, wearing a ghost mask and wielding a large scythe-sword, hesitated.
Because it still remembered the strange smile of the native just before he died, making it feel something was eerie about everything in this historical slice.
Could it be that there was a particularly fierce native in this historical slice?
Now that the native’s phantom was gone, it didn’t seem quite right to withdraw.
"Prepare to attack, kill them all!"
The bandit leader raised his scythe-sword high, pointing in the direction of the county city.
But at that moment, it saw a group of players, full of joy, rushing out from the county city, not only failing to retreat but also smiling as if brimming with the joy of a bountiful harvest!
