Chapter 89: Chapter 89: Homecoming (Third Update)

Sun Xiajuan chased after him, calling out from behind. She grabbed his arm, insisting he couldn’t leave, but the man shook her off with a quick move. Sun Xiajuan was both angry and hateful, but in the end, she couldn’t hold it in any longer and ran off covering her face, crying.

This farce blew over quickly, much like a gust of wind—fast to arrive and quick to go.

Yang PeiMin felt it was a bit absurd herself, her aggressive tendencies had burst forth.

But when she looked at Pan Shuiqin, she was somewhat worried, "Cousin, your elder sister-in-law is Sun Xiajuan’s sister-in-law? She’ll definitely go back and tattle, and I’m afraid it might bring trouble for you."

Pan Shuiqin waved her hand, apparently not taking it seriously, "At most they’ll say a few words. I can handle it. It’s not like a few scoldings will take a piece of flesh off me."

After saying this, she let out a relieved laugh, "That girl’s got it worse though, her prospective match just slipped through her fingers."

While Shen Yiguang went to open the car door, Pan Shuiqin quickly leaned in close to whisper in his ear, "Your man is something else. You’ve got to keep an eye on him in the future, be careful or you’ll end up sold off by him and helpfully counting the money for him."

Yang PeiMin gave her an amused look and rolled her eyes.

After Pan Shuiqin had gone back,

Shen Yiguang’s expression was calm, and his feelings were unreadable, but Yang PeiMin, trusting her intuition as a woman, felt that he was probably angry.

Yang PeiMin moved closer to him and took the initiative, "Shen Yiguang, I’m really sorry about today. I must have looked awful fighting, didn’t I?"

She thought that few men would like a shrew.

It was nearing lunchtime and the little road was rather empty. They were still more than ten meters away from the Shen family house. Shen Yiguang took her hand without stopping, his gaze fixed straight ahead, leaving Yang PeiMin looking at a chiselled, tough side profile that was both cool and stern.

"I’m not angry that you got involved in a fight, I’m angry that you put yourself in danger," he said after a moment, then he turned to look at her briefly and added, "In a situation you can’t fully control, provoking the other person is very unwise."

"If I hadn’t seen something was off from a distance and run over, do you realize what could have happened?" His voice was sharp with the last sentence. The thought of that man’s fan-sized hand almost striking his wife’s delicate face filled him with an uncontrollable rage.

But it wasn’t the right time to escalate the situation then and tarnish his wife’s reputation; they would settle this matter later on.

Yang PeiMin was oblivious to her husband’s grim plans and hung her head in shame, "I know I was wrong." Indeed, she had been too impulsive.

Shen Yiguang squeezed her hand, "Although you were wrong, you weren’t completely at fault. One thing is praiseworthy; you knew to call for your man’s help in danger."

A hint of a smile appeared in his eyes as he looked at her.

Yang PeiMin nodded in agreement and decided to compliment him as well, "At that moment, you were like a hero, descending from the heavens, clearing away the darkness ahead, bringing dawn to the land."

Shen Yiguang suddenly coughed.

As they stepped into the Shen family courtyard, Shen Yixiang came out to greet them, a complex expression on her face. She approached them and whispered, "There’s someone here, that old hag said she wants to see brother." After saying this, she pursed her lips, showing her discontent, "Brother, don’t go see her. That old hag is up to her tricks again."

Yang PeiMin was curious about the "old hag" she mentioned.

Shen Yiguang nodded and consoled his sister with a couple of words, "I know. Just don’t show your thoughts, I’ll go have a look."

Then he turned to Yang PeiMin to explain, "It’s my grandmother."

Shen Yixiang looked at Yang PeiMin and pulled a face, "Sister-in-law, be careful later. That old hag specifically asked to see you, the new granddaughter-in-law. She’s gotten better at playing the victim over the years. Don’t get yourself wrapped up in it, so as not to harm our family’s interests."

Shen Yiguang patted her on the back of the head, "That’s enough."

Shen Yixiang puffed up her cheeks but said no more.

Shen Yiguang gripped Yang PeiMin’s hand and entered the main house.

Sitting on the kang bed like the master of the house was his Uncle Shen.

At that moment, he was pulling a stern face, his eyelids drooping, but occasionally a sharp gleam flashed from within them. Had Yang PeiMin not known in advance that he was Shen Yiguang’s uncle, she might have mistaken him for a debt collector.

Shen Yiguang called out, "Uncle."

The man grunted an acknowledgment from his nose.

He then shifted his gaze onto Yang PeiMin.

"Is this the new bride you’ve married?"

Shen Yiguang didn’t answer, instead instructing Shen Yiyue to bring a cup of water for his sister-in-law.

With a slap, Uncle Shen, Shen Daniu, struck the edge of the kang.

"How disrespectful, not even greeting your elder. What kind of upbringing is this?"

Unmoved, Shen Yiguang especially instructed Shen Yiyue to add some brown sugar, "Your sister-in-law just took a tumble, and it was a bad one. She still hasn’t caught her breath."

Chen Guizhi, on the other hand, seemed anxious, frightened to the point of standing off to the side, not daring to sit.

After glancing at her son again, her mouth twitched, but she ultimately couldn’t say anything.

Shen Erniu was like a statue, completely isolating himself from the outside world. He sat at the corner of the kang on his own, puffing on a water pipe in silence.

Shen Daniu was infuriated by this family, his few whiskers above his lip nearly standing on end.

"Alright, your family has grown prosperous, looking down on this uncle of yours. You’ve forgotten your roots."

Yang PeiMin sipped her water, using the large porcelain bowl, the size of her face, to shield the smirk on her lips. She found the situation somewhat amusing.

After Yang PeiMin drank some water, Shen Yiguang then asked her to go and cook with the two younger sisters.

It was only after Yang PeiMin left that she heard Shen Yiguang speaking with Uncle Shen inside.

Shen Yiyue explained to her, "Uncle came over saying that grandma is sick, wanting big brother to go see her."

As Yang PeiMin appeared to listen intently, Shen Yiyue continued, "When you married big brother, they didn’t come, they are still angry about big brother not helping cousin Red Army with his trouble."

She then explained about cousin Red Army’s issue. Shen Hongjun was Uncle Shen’s youngest son, working as a scorer in the production team. He was reported for abusing his power, not only criticized by the big team by name, but also tasked to travel thousands of miles away to repair a river channel. Naturally, Uncle Shen’s family was vehemently opposed to him going. Everyone knew the work was hard and dangerous, and there were even rumors of people being buried alive.

So, they wanted Shen Yiguang, the most accomplished family member who had significant influence in the team, to speak up on their behalf to prevent cousin Red Army from being sent away.

Because he didn’t agree to their demands, they put on an angry front, not even attending his wedding ceremony.

Shen Yixiang interjected with a sneer, "It’s better that they didn’t come. More peaceful that way."

"Isn’t it that they didn’t come? Now they show up again, what’s that about?"

Shen Yiyue glanced at Yang PeiMin, murmuring, "Seems like they must need big brother’s help with something again."

Shen Yixiang spat, "The nerve they have! If they dare ask, watch me spit right in their face!"
