Chapter 954: Chapter 951 Noob Teammate
On the other side, Yan Bo hailed a cab to send Tao Jia back to the hotel.
On the taxi ride, Yan Bo asked Tao Jia.
"Jiajia, did you and Xiao Hua really just go to the crystal store earlier?"
Yan Bo wasn’t a fool; when Tong Xiaohua had left with Tao Jia from Yanhuang, Tong Xiaohua was perfectly fine.
But looking at Tong Xiaohua at the Cantonese restaurant, she didn’t seem like someone without troubles.
She claimed it was because of the casino matter, but Yan Bo knew right away that was just a superficial excuse.
Tao Jia only found it odd, "Yes, she took me directly to that store, we picked out quite a few accessories, and she even paid the bill. Then we headed back to pick you up. What’s wrong?"
It wasn’t strange Tao Jia hadn’t noticed anything unusual; after all, she wasn’t familiar with Tong Xiaohua, and they had only spent a few hours together at most.
"So what did you two talk about during that hour and a bit?"
If nothing odd had happened, then the problem must have been with the content of their conversation.
Yan Bo was very aware of both Tong Xiaohua and Tao Jia’s personalities; the two of them were like two extremes.
Tong Xiaohua was extremely cautious and wouldn’t open up easily, similarly, she wouldn’t pry into other people’s affairs.
Meanwhile, Tao Jia was the kind of person who had no filter and could chat with anyone all day long.
Tao Jia glanced at him sideways, "Yo, are you afraid I corrupted Xiao Hua or something?"
Although Tao Jia was carefree, when she acted spoiled, she could also be quite a hassle. After all, growing up in such a family background, she had always been pampered and protected, so being a bit willful was normal.
Yan Bo sighed helplessly, "Jiajia, don’t make trouble! Something’s off with Xiao Hua, I asked her, and she said it’s nothing, but I want you to think back and tell me if she took any calls or talked about any upsetting issues earlier."
Yan Bo understood Tong Xiaohua’s stubbornness; if she didn’t want to talk, there was no chance of prying anything out of her.
But he couldn’t just watch her being downhearted, when she was upset, so was he.
Tao Jia then put away her playful smile, rested her chin on her hand, and thought seriously for a moment.
"In the crystal store, she mentioned something about having bought a necklace and earrings before. Later, on the car ride... I just talked to her about some of the fun little things you and I did back in Capital City, that’s all."
Yan Bo furrowed his brow, faintly grasping the crux of the issue.
"You talked to her about our matters? Did she mention anything about our families?"
Tao Jia was puzzled, "Our families? You mean how my parents and your parents want to set us up? I didn’t mention that, how could I possibly bring up such a thing!"
Tao Jia thought back carefully, "I just told her about your leading position among us youths from aristocratic families."
It should have been something to be proud of, yet Yan Bo’s frown deepened.
Then, Tao Jia seemed to recall something else, "Oh, right, she did ask me a question, ’The Yan Family you’re talking about, is it that Yan Family?’ I found it strange. Could it be, you’ve never mentioned your family background to her?"
It wasn’t until then that Tao Jia remembered this peculiar matter.
At this moment, her expression was a mix of innocence and confusion, whereas Yan Bo, it seemed, had understood where the problem lay.
Tong Xiaohua was certainly in a daze because of the issue with his family background.
However, what he couldn’t confirm was whether she was upset that he had deceived her?
Or was it simply that she was having trouble accepting his background all at once?
Yan Bo was extremely anxious, but he couldn’t just abandon Tao Jia, and besides, he didn’t want Tao Jia to know or get too involved in his affairs with Tong Xiaohua.
Of course, it’s not that he didn’t trust Tao Jia as a person, but rather, he didn’t trust her mouth.
Yan Bo secretly regretted having brought a noob teammate on board. On the surface, however, he remained calm and accompanied Tao Jia back to the hotel, saw her to her guest room, agreed on a time to pick her up for dinner later that night, and then left.
The hotel where Tao Jia stayed was just a few minutes’ walk from Yanhuang.
All the way back, Yan Bo pondered how to explain things to Tong Xiaohua. Once in the office, fearing that she might not pick up his mobile phone, he directly dialed her from the landline.
At the Tong Family home, Tong Xiaohua was still in the living room with her parents. Hearing the phone ring and seeing it was an unfamiliar landline number, she hesitated for a moment before answering.
"Hello, who is this?"
"Xiaohua, it’s me!"
The two of them had always talked on their mobile phones, so Tong Xiaohua didn’t recognize Yan Bo’s office number.
Now, hearing Yan Bo’s deep voice come unexpectedly through the receiver, Tong Xiaohua’s heartbeat also went offbeat without warning.
Normally, she would answer Yan Bo’s calls with nothing to hide.
But today, she felt strangely guilty for no reason. She glanced at her parents, stood up, took the phone, and hurried to her bedroom.
"Mm, what’s up?"
She answered in a suppressed voice and casually closed the door behind her.
"Xiaohua, about my family’s business, I want to explain something to you."
On the other end of the phone, Yan Bo had no intention of beating around the bush. In this matter, he had always had his own considerations and never meant to keep Tong Xiaohua in the dark forever.
Before his mother’s birthday, his plan was to take Tong Xiaohua straight to his home so that both his parents and Tong Xiaohua could see for themselves the people and the family circumstances without needing further explanation.
However, after his parents had clearly shown their opposition, he decided to put it on hold and do his best to communicate with his parents first. Once they accepted, he would then bring Tong Xiaohua home.
He thought that this way, he could avoid hurting Tong Xiaohua.
But plans can never keep up with changes, and now that she knew, it was necessary for him to clarify everything first to prevent her from overthinking.
Tong Xiaohua’s heartbeat quickened even more. Deep down, she was actually resistant to the truth Tao Jia had told her.
She even hoped that Yan Bo would tell her that everything Tao Jia had said was false.
She wanted him to tell her that he wasn’t the son of some senior official but just a minor son from a little official’s family.
Yet, on the other hand, she was very aware that what Tao Jia said was true.
Because on her way back, as she slowly recalled Yan Bo’s every action and the respectful way the people around him treated him, it had practically spelled out his prominent background.
"What do you want to explain..."
Tong Xiaohua sat cross-legged at the edge of the bed on the carpet, her mind still a tangled mess.
From an aristocratic family, from a gangster’s family.
In her eyes, they were like water and oil, naturally incompatible existences.
Even if you mix the two substances in a bottle and shake them vigorously, once they settle, the layers will still separate neatly.
Tong Xiaohua pressed her hand to her face, which was still cool to the touch.
"Xiaohua, I never intended to deceive you. To me, my family is no different from an ordinary family, and actually, I was planning to take you straight to my place..."
