Chapter 705: Baby Boy Goes Missing. Five

Chapter 705: Chapter 705: Baby Boy Goes Missing. Five

Even though she’d taken a small dose of medication, Zhu Qianying still slept poorly that night.

Yan Xu had taken half a sleeping pill himself, knowing that in situations like this, he needed to rest well when he could so that they would have the strength to continue searching for their baby boy the next day.

Despite taking the sleeping pill, he didn’t sleep deeply. Through the haze of his light sleep, he felt the person in his arms moving restlessly throughout the night.

Sometimes, he even faintly heard her sobbing. Half-asleep, he’d reach over to brush her tears away. It seemed like he always touched upon a cold, damp patch.

It was just after five in the morning, and with the sky barely bright, Yan Xu woke up. He could faintly recall the events of the night before and let out a silent sigh.

Quickly washing up and dressing, he bent down to scoop Zhu Qianying into his arms, "Baby, it’s dawn..."

His lips met hers, gently comforting her. The truth was, she was not the only one who drew strength from his touch.

Holding her in his arms like this, feeling her warmth and breathing in her scent, it boosted his own strength.

He felt grateful that despite everything that had happened, she didn’t fight, or make a scene, or even complain about anything. She just quietly kept him company, calmly facing everything that was going on.

But, surely, she must have been suffering tremendously on the inside.

After all, their son was a piece of her own flesh that had fallen from her body,. They had depended on each other for years, and when they could almost see their happy life beckoning them, such a disaster had happened.

To say she was not in pain would be a lie.

However, she also understood that crying, making a fuss, or demanding answers wouldn’t solve anything at a time like this. In fact, it might even make things worse. That was why she held back her sorrow, only allowing herself to cry in her sleep.

Zhu Qianying stirred in his embrace. She hadn’t been sleeping deeply and snuggled against him before opening her eyes and instinctively kissing him.

Opening her eyes, she looked at the faintly glowing sky outside the window and sat upright at once.

"Time to leave, right?"

As she spoke, she got off the bed and made her way barefoot into the bathroom.

"Let’s follow Star this time!"

Yan Xu thought about it all night, and he felt that they should trust Star more.

Zhu Qianying nodded in agreement, swiftly got dressed, and walked out the door.

A few teams were gathering in the restricted area. Yan Xu shared his thoughts with He Ju, who expressed his support.

Because the search area had expanded, He Ju had called in a significant number of police officers overnight. The Ji brothers took a team, Ke Kai and the retired soldiers Yan Xu had brought divided into two more teams. In addition to Yan Xu and Zhu Qianying’s team and the one led by He Ju himself, there were now five search teams in total.

Zhu Qianying and Yan Xu didn’t follow the route they had taken the previous night. Instead, they led Star to the entrance of the restricted area and waited there. Just like the day before, Star was restlessly circling at the entrance, giving a low whimper of anxiety.

Yan Xu squatted down to hug him and tenderly stroke his head.

"Star, your daddy has lost his way. You must be a good boy and sniff carefully. Help your grandparents find your daddy."

At this point, Yan Xu was willing to place his faith in a dog as long as there was hope.

Zhu Qianying’s heart ached as she watched Yan Xu’s sincere reaction.

This was when she understood why people on the brink of death would suddenly turn to Buddhism or latch onto nonsensical ramblings of charlatans.

Just like her right now, if a charlatan came over and claimed that he could show them the way for a fee, even if she knew he was spouting nonsense, for that sliver of hope, she was sure she would pay the money.

So, it was not at all strange for Yan Xu to put his hope in Star!

Star whined and pressed against Yan Xu, an expression of extreme sorrow on its face. It seemed as though Star understood what Yan Xu was saying.

Yan Xu stroked its fur to soothe it, then rose to his feet to signal the officers in his team that it was time to set out.

Star circled the spot anxiously a few more times before trotting ten meters toward the dense forest. Just when Zhu Qianying and Yan Xu thought he was going to keep going, Star paused, turned around, and walked back to the entrance of the restricted area. After sniffing the ground there for a while, it began pulling at Yan Xu’s trouser leg, leading him down the mountain.

Although Zhu Qianying and Yan Xu were surprised, they led their team of officers in following Star down the mountain.

Star proceeded slowly, sniffing the ground as it went. The search and rescue team leader, who had been walking down the mountain road for two or three hundred meters, couldn’t help but remind Yan Xu,

"Mr. Yan, Star might just be picking up the scent of Yan Xu on his way up the mountain."

Zhu Qianying and Yan Xu were not fools. They understood this possibility, but Yan Xu chose to believe in Star’s judgement.

Even so, he glanced over at Zhu Qianying for reassurance and asked,

"What do you think, Ying’er?"

Zhu Qianying pointed at Star, who was still sniffing around diligently, "I believe in Star..."

After all, the other four teams were following the search route, while only their team was following Star’s lead. Zhu Qianying understood that their choice to trust Star was, in essence, a gamble.

The team leader had no objections because he also believed that sometimes, familial bonds could indeed create an intuitive connection.

As the parents, if they had such firm belief in this, then it was worth giving it a try.

Star, without concern for the humans’ doubts and skepticism trailing behind it, continued along its way, dedicatedly sniffing the path. Thus, they were led a further two or three hundred meters by Star.

By now, they were already five or six hundred meters away from the edge of the restricted area.

Yan Xu held Zhu Qianying’s hand all the way, both of them holding their breaths and quietly walking behind Star.

Every now and then, there was a small forked path leading deeper into the forest on this downhill trail. Each time Zhu Qianying and Yan Xu came across these paths, their hearts tightened.

However, Star ignored all the forks and continued to guide them straight down the mountain.

Finally, after they had walked a while, Star stopped. There were no forks around this point, and yet Star became restless and started to lead Yan Xu into the shrubs.

Hope flashed in Yan Xu’s eyes as he and Zhu Qianying briskly walked into the undergrowth, following Star.

The officers, of course, quickly followed suit.

Star initially did a small jog since it was still sniffing around. However, after they had covered a few meters into the undergrowth, Star began to run.

Zhu Qianying and Yan Xu, surprised and elated, shared a glance before picking up pace to catch up with Star.

Star was running, barking all the while. Its barks started softly but grew louder over time. Picking up on Star’s urgency, Zhu Qianying and Yan Xu quickened their pace.
