Chapter 486: Chapter 486: Little Gentle Boy, Baby Boy - II
Tears welled up in Zhu Qianying’s eyes as she tousled her son’s head. Her gaze settled on Bai Xiaolu, whose head was bowed, seemingly engrossed in her textbook.
From the moment she found out about Xiaolu’s existence, she never asked Bai Shao why she chose to give birth to Xiaolu.
It was much like how she had never revealed to Bai Shao, or even her mother and Xiao Yu, her decision to have her baby boy.
She knew more than anyone that certain wounds were best handled in solitude, slowly licked and nursed in the shadows.
She didn’t ask Bai Shao how she explained Zong Zhe to Xiaolu. But she knew that Xiaolu, like her own son, was an empathetic child. They both had their share of sorrow hidden away in their hearts, unwilling to let their mothers see or feel it.
"Baby, go keep Xiaolu company," she said.
With their similar life experiences, perhaps simply being silent companions could help share the burden.
The baby boy nodded solemnly and edged back to Bai Xiaolu’s side. Instead of talking, he pulled out his own textbooks and notebooks and began to diligently work on his homework.
"Yan Xu..."
Bai Xiaolu, who had been silent for a long while, suddenly called out to him.
"Huh?!".
He raised his head hastily, leaning close to her.
"What did Aunt Ying Zi tell you about before?"
Bai Xiaolu had recently gathered some information about him from the adults’ conversations, knowing that, like her, he had not been living in the country for very long.
He, too, grew up without a father, just like her.
However, when he returned, he had such a wonderful father in Uncle Yan. But she, on the other hand, had gained only a grandfather, and still no father.
Even though Bai Xiaolu didn’t articulate it, the baby boy immediately understood her implication.
He tilted his head, pondering for a moment before answering seriously.
"My mommy simply told me that she and daddy got divorced and that daddy married another woman. However, when I came back, daddy told me that it was all a misunderstanding. He wasn’t divorced from mommy, and he didn’t marry anyone else."
Bai Xiaolu listened to him, silently dabbing at her teary eyes. After a long pause, she whispered softly.
"My mommy told me... my daddy is dead."
The baby boy was taken aback for a moment, unsure of how to comfort her as he was too young and had never confronted death before. So, all he could do was pat her back gently with his small hand.
After her confession, Bai Xiaolu kept her eyes glued to the pictures of a family of three in her textbook, with her lips pressed into a firm line.
Seeing her like this, the baby boy pushed the milk custard he brought over to her again.
"Eat it. Mommy said eating dessert can make you feel better."
The boy wasn’t sure if what his mommy had said was scientifically proven, but he sincerely hoped that after Bai Xiaolu ate this bowl of milk custard, she would immediately feel better and revert to the lively girl who would point at him and call him "Yan Xu".
This time, Bai Xiaolu didn’t decline, accepting the spoon the baby boy pushed into her hand and began to spoon the milk custard into her mouth bit by bit.
Halfway through the dessert, Xiaolu raised her teary eyes and glanced seriously at him, saying, "Thank you!"
On one side, the two children sat together. Xiaolu hunched over eating her dessert, and the baby boy quietly watched her from the side.
On the other, after serving her customers, Bai Shao came down from the second floor. Zhu Qianying pulled her aside, nodded towards the children, and recounted what the baby boy had said to her close friend.
Upon hearing her, the color drained from Bai Shao’s face.
"I understand."
She then looked deeply at her daughter but did not say anything. Turning around, she went into the kitchen to relay the customers’ requests from the second floor.
A bit later, the baby boy then sidled up to Zhu Qianying and muttered in her ear, "Mommy, Bai Xiaolu said her mommy told her that her daddy is dead. Is it true?"
Zhu Qianying’s heart jolted!
Had her friend simply said in anger that Xiaolu’s father was dead, or did she already know about Zong Zhe’s death?
Zhu Qianying was in a quandary, unsure of how she should answer to her son’s question.
Seeing her silence, the boy anxiously shook her arm, "Mommy, is what Bai Xiaolu said true?"
Zhu Qianying could only nod her head, "Yes..." but she quickly added, looking at her son’s worried face, "But remember, don’t bring this up in front of Aunt Shao Zi and Xiaolu, alright?"
The boy nodded solemnly, answering seriously.
"Mommy, I understand."
When Master Yan returned to the restaurant in the evening, the boy who he hadn’t seen for two days didn’t show any signs of excitement or even deliberately distanced himself.
Master Yan felt puzzled but as an adult, he decided not to dwell on this trivial issue.
It was only on their way home after dinner that the boy reverted to his usual clingy nature, bombarding Master Yan with questions.
Having answered a pile of questions from his son, Master Yan patted his buttock, asking, "Baby, why were you ignoring me earlier?"
Master Yan, who had rarely been ignored by his son recently, felt something was not right just for being left alone for an hour.
No wonder people say, ’one who has never had something will not fear losing it.’
The saying couldn’t be more apt in Master Yan’s current situation.
The young boy, who was initially bubbly and full of laughter, froze at Master Yan’s words. He turned to look at Zhu Qianying, seemingly reaching out for help.
Master Yan also looked in Zhu Qianying’s direction, assuming that she’d said something that upset the boy. He put away his smile and asked, "What happened?"
Zhu Qianying dwelled upon it for a moment, then decided it was best to clear things up. It would save Master Yan from unintentionally upsetting Bai Shao and her daughter in the future.
She recounted the events at the restaurant earlier in the evening. After listening, Master Yan fell silent for a while.
He let out a sigh, held up his son’s face and stared into his eyes, asking, "So, baby, were you worried that being too close to daddy would upset Xiaolu?"
His son blinked and remained silent. In the end, he could only nod.
When they got home, the boy went to take a bath while Master Yan sat in the living room, gesturing to Zhu Qianying to join him.
"Zong Zhe’s parents, even though they have several children, only have Zong Zhe as their son. If they find out about Xiaolu’s existence, I’m not sure how they will react."
Master Yan’s understanding indicated that Zong Zhe’s parents were difficult people - far from generous, ordinary citizens.
Zhu Qianying let out a sigh. "As outsiders, there is little we can do to help. I’ve said everything I needed to say Xiao Shao, and given all the warnings I could. From now on, we’ll just have to let things take their course."
It was fortunate that L City and City B were directly connected, making the travel long and challenging. As long as Bai Shao stayed low and remained careful, especially with Master Yan looking out for them, they should be able to live comfortably and without much concern.
