Chapter 389: My love, always here, the 389th

Cheng Ye watched her, waiting patiently for what she had to say next.

"Because, he and I, we never divorced!"

Zhu Qianying assumed she would see a surprise, or shock in Cheng Ye’s eyes.

However, Cheng Ye’s eyes reflected nothing but calm, as if he had anticipated this all along.

After exchanging glances for a while, Cheng Ye finally spoke.

"I know!"

When he first met Yan Han, Yan Han had mentioned that he had never divorced Zhu Qianying.

But at that time, Cheng Ye didn’t believe it.

He assumed it was just something Yan Han said to scare or deceive him.

Yet after overhearing their conversation in the restaurant, and considering Zhu Qianying’s current admission, he now almost confirmed that Yan Han’s initial claim of "never having divorced" was true.

Yet, whether or not they had divorced, or remarried, was immaterial. The crucial factor was Zhu Qianying harbored no feelings for Yan Han!

This was what Cheng Ye truly cared about.

Marriages can be dissolved, and divorcees can reunite, but once feelings are lost, rekindling them is not so easy!

"Ying Zi, in about half a year, I’ll shift my work focus back domestically. Then, we can fight side by side, just like before!"

Cheng Ye didn’t plan to burst the bubble of Zhu Qianying’s and Yan Han’s faux marital relationship. He just wanted her to understand one fact - regardless of where she went, he would follow her.

Then, despite feeling slightly apprehensive, he gathered the courage to grasp her hand, interlocking their fingers and enclosing her hand tightly within his.

Zhu Qianying’s attention was instantly drawn to her hand. After responding absentmindedly, she attempted to pull her hand free. After a couple of attempts, she finally managed to extricate her hand from his grip.

Whether she was considered virtuous or conservative, she was never comfortable with such intimate and ambiguous contact with the opposite sex.

Even with the likes of Xing Bailun before, the most she ever did was occasionally link arms or lean on their shoulders. Handholding, however, was something she rarely engaged in.

Xing Bailun and the others seemed to understand her boundaries - they maintained respect for them despite their close friendship, adhering to the set boundaries and never overstepping them.

Cheng Ye, obviously, had crossed that line now.

"Cheng, in terms of work, we’ve always been on the same page."

Zhu Qianying held up her cup and looked at Cheng Ye resolutely.

Cheng Ye nodded, "I know!"

"But I hope that you understand - my support for you isn’t restricted to work, emotionally, I will always stand by your side too!"

Her words weren’t quite clear. Zhu Qianying could have pretended not to understand, but she chose not to feign ignorance in this matter.

"Cheng, I appreciate your kindness and care immensely over the years, but I just can’t give you what you want."

When it comes to feelings, ambiguity often cuts deeper than a clean break.

Cheng Ye understood her implication. His contemplative gaze once again landed on her bare ring finger.

"Ying Zi, I understand that you cannot give me what I desire, but you haven’t given Yan Han anything either, have you?"

With that being the case, his and Yan Han’s situations were actually the same.

"I don’t expect you to promise me anything. I just want to compete on an equal footing with Yan Han."

Just as Zhu Qianying was about to respond, instrumental music began to resonate from the small stage before them.

While she looked toward the stage, Cheng Ye suddenly jumped off his bar stool, walked briskly towards the stage, and with a single leap, he deftly made his way onto the stage.

Under Zhu Qianying’s surprised gaze, Cheng Ye grabbed the microphone off its stand.

"Tonight, I want to dedicate a song to the woman I love. My singing might not be pleasing, I might even go off-key, but the lyrics are a reflection of my heart’s sincerity, just like my feelings for her!"

The crowd below erupted into applause and cheers!

Amidst the cheering, her colleagues teased, "Ying Zi, just say yes to the boss!"

That’s when Zhu Qianying realized why the bar was so quiet tonight.

It wasn’t due to an incident or accident. Cheng Ye had booked the entire place!

The prelude slowly began amidst the cheers and applause, and Cheng Ye’s slightly harsh voice resonated within the accompaniment of the music.

The song was a very classic love ballad. As he said, his singing wasn’t exactly pleasant and he did go off-key a few times. But he sang with such passion and sincerity.

Not being moved by his performance would’ve been a lie.

However, other than being touched, Zhu Qianying couldn’t reciprocate much else.

And she knew all too well that Cheng Ye wanted more than just her to be moved by his performance.

"Ying Zi, doesn’t our boss looks good?!"

A voice suddenly came from behind. Leaning on the table with her chin in her hands, one of Zhu Qianying’s assistants, a young girl in her early twenties, was gazing at Cheng Ye on the stage in fascination.

Zhu Qianying patted her head and smiled, "If you think he’s good looking, then pursue him!"

The assistant turned around, smiling at her, "Ying Zi, some people are meant to be admired from a distance. We all know where the boss’s heart resides. It’s with you."

Zhu Qianying managed to squeeze out a smile in response, picked up her wine glass, and took a sip.

Cheng Ye’s heart was with her.

But her heart?

Where did it reside?

Generally, she actually knew the answer.

Or rather, she’d always known the answer, just unwilling to confront it.

At the end of the song, Cheng Ye didn’t continue. He returned the microphone to its stand and descended from the stage.

Zhu Qianying’s assistant, understanding the situation, had already slinked off. Cheng Ye sat down back, taking a sip of his drink before locking eyes with her, asking,

"Did you like it?"

Zhu Qianying did a little clap, "It was nice!"

Cheng Ye winked at her, "Nothing else?"

Zhu Qianying shrugged, shaking her head, "Nope, nothing else!"

Cheng Ye didn’t seem particularly disappointed, he nodded and sighed lightly, "Ying Zi, I won’t push you. I just want you to know, my love is always present."

Zhu Qianying couldn’t continue the playful charade with him any longer. After remaining silent for a bit, she finally spoke.

"Cheng, I’m not worth it. Even if there wasn’t Yan Han, or anyone else, you and I are suited to being nothing more than good friends and workmates."

Even after hearing his song, she was touched, but Zhu Qianying was as resolute as ever!

There’s no concept of owing in matters of the heart.

Zhu Qianying just hoped that Cheng Ye would stop harbouring unrealistic expectations of her.

Feelings are just like kites, and expectations are like the controlling strings.

The higher the expectations, the higher the kite flies.

But when expectations turn into disappointments, the string breaks, and the kite falls.

She understood better than anyone the extent of the pain of such a fall from great heights.

In this life, she didn’t wish to experience it again. At the same time, she hoped Cheng Ye wouldn’t have to taste it either!

She couldn’t give him much, so all she could do was to try to cut the strings while his kite was still fluttering at a lower altitude.
