Chapter 1112: Chapter 1109: Xiao Lizi and Baby Boy. Extra (70)
After dinner, the organizer said they had arranged transportation to take all attendees for a tour around D City, but Bai Lu excused herself saying she wasn’t feeling well and stayed back to rest in the hotel.
Bai Lu returned to her room and got busy with her research project on her laptop.
Bai Lu was a highly self-disciplined person, and even though she was on a business trip, she always kept her research project moving forward, not allowing her travels to slow her down.
Around nine o’clock, Yan Xu sent a video call request.
Bai Lu was somewhat surprised but quickly accepted.
On the mobile phone screen appeared Yan Xu’s handsome face, "You have to attend a meeting tonight?"
Bai Lu swept her mobile phone’s camera across her laptop screen, "A group of seniors are teaming up to visit D City’s famous historic sites, and I am working overtime alone in the hotel."
Yan Xu looked at her intently for a few moments, "So, you haven’t found a single senior you can get along with?"
Bai Lu curled her lips, "No tablemates, not sure about the others. If every three years really marks a generation gap, then I’m separated from them by at least ten gaps."
Yan Xu’s lips curved slightly, "Haven’t you ever attended a seminar like this before?"
Bai Lu said, "That’s not the case, but before I either attended with the Dean and Director or it was all young people. This is indeed the first time I have attended a meeting without any of my own people or peers."
Yan Xu consoled her, "No worries, maybe from tomorrow when the topics shift back to professional fields, there will be common ground for conversation."
Bai Lu actually found this reassuring, "Right, after the formal meetings, I will be able to understand everything they talk about."
The two chatted for almost half an hour like this. Seeing that it was about time for Yan Xu to sleep, they ended the video call—one went to sleep, and the other, continued to work.
The seminar was divided into two stages. For the first two days, experts and academicians from various subfields both domestic and international gave lectures. In the last three days, attendees took turns presenting and having discussions.
As a participant, Bai Lu had prepared the content of her own presentation before coming.
During the lectures by experts and academicians in the first two days, Bai Lu listened intently. After all, these were world-class top experts, and the content and direction of their lectures were absolutely cutting-edge.
Therefore, Bai Lu’s first two days were quite fulfilling. Although she still inevitably faced pushy introductions to someone’s son or someone’s colleague during meals and during idle chatter, overall, she felt more at ease than on the first day.
However, on the afternoon of the third day, the lecture content of a man in his fifties left Bai Lu frowning in her seat.
She resisted the urge to confront him on stage and decided to send Yan Xu a message first.
"Yan Xu, there’s a senior in his fifties at the conference whose lecture content mostly comes from a paper I published when I was a student. Should I go up and expose him?"
If Yan Xu hadn’t been there, Bai Lu, with her straightforward nature, would probably have already stood up to expose the senior’s misconduct.
"No need, you should go directly to the person in charge from the organizer and tell them the truth. As for how to handle it, leave it to them."
Bai Lu thought it over and it seemed like a more prudent approach.
She crept out of her seat and found the person in charge in the staff’s studio.
The person in charge was a middle-aged uncle, who was surprised to see her come in.
"Doctor Bai, is there something you need?"
Bai Lu glanced at the few other people present, "Director Li, may I have a word with you in private?"
Director Li took her into the conference room, and Bai Lu explained the situation truthfully.
"What you’re saying is, the content of Professor Zhang’s current lecture comprises mostly of the papers you published while studying abroad?"
Bai Lu nodded, "Yes, they can be found on our school’s website."
Director Li walked out with a serious expression and soon returned, handing Bai Lu a laptop.
Bai Lu logged onto the school network and pulled up her paper.
Director Li printed the paper and compared it with the first part of Professor Zhang’s presentation, confirming that it was as Bai Lu had said.
Director Li furrowed his brow, "Doctor Bai, we need to have a meeting to discuss this matter; rest assured, it will be dealt with seriously."
With his assurance, Bai Lu felt at ease and continued to attend other elders’ presentations.
However, by evening, after all the presentations had finished for the day, the organizers had not shown any reaction or feedback.
Bai Lu thought that perhaps the organizers would address the issue tomorrow?
That evening, while video chatting with Yan Xu, when he asked about the situation, she responded the same way.
Yan Xu didn’t say much, but the next day, not long after the conference started, Yan Xu sent her a message.
"How is it going, have the organizers responded to you yet?"
Bai Lu replied, "No, not yet. Today’s sessions are proceeding as scheduled, and right now, the first professor of the day is giving a lecture."
Yan Xu: "Hmm, just be careful, then."
Bai Lu took Yan Xu’s words as casually spoken and didn’t think much of them.
It wasn’t until she was cornered in the corridor by Professor Zhang on her way back to her room after dinner that she suddenly realized Yan Xu’s words were not casually spoken; they were a real reminder for her to be careful.
"Professor Zhang, what’s the matter?"
Bai Lu’s room was at the very end of the corridor, which had windows. The man in his fifties kept advancing step by step, while Bai Lu steadily retreated, her back pressed against the window glass.
There was heating in the hotel, but it was the middle of winter outside, so the icy glass, through Bai Lu’s thin clothes, made her shiver.
"What? Feeling guilty? Scared?"
Professor Zhang’s tone was fierce, his face slightly distorted.
Bai Lu frowned, wondering whether to use the self-defense move Yan Xu had recently taught her to deal with this detestable old man.
"Professor Zhang, I don’t understand what you’re talking about."
One of her hands was in her coat pocket, inside of which was her phone.
She tried to buy time while unlocking her phone to call for help.
The old man was tall and imposing, his eyes bulging as he glared at Bai Lu.
"Still pretending? Are you saying you didn’t report to the organizers that my lecture manuscript plagiarized your thesis? What’s the big deal? Do you believe that with just a word from me, you could disappear from the medical circle?"
His arrogance was so extreme that it made Bai Lu laugh!
"Professor Zhang, what you did can’t even be called plagiarism; it’s outright lifting my work as if it were your own! As for making me disappear, that depends on whether you have the ability!"
Let’s not even mention her parents’ social status or the significant donations they make to the society’s support projects each year; just by the positions her uncle, aunt, and her mentor Director Luo hold in the medical circle, does he really have the clout to make her vanish?
And the old man, obviously, hadn’t grasped Bai Lu’s background and hadn’t even looked at the author when he was copying.
"Look at that attitude; aren’t you just a little doctor? I, Zhang, have patients booked until next year; why would I need to copy your discordant piece of junk?"
