Chapter 1100: Chapter 1097: Xiao Lizi and Baby Boy. Extra (58)
Director Luo treated everyone to dinner, booking a large private room for the dozen or so team members, himself, and his assistant. Among these people, Bai Lu was the youngest.
Half of the team members were old enough to be Bai Lu’s parents, and the remaining half were close to or over thirty years of age. Added to that, Bai Lu’s own cheerful and generous nature meant that outside of work, everyone doted on her as if she were the group’s pet.
"Xiao Bai, when are you free to come over for a BBQ?"
Dr. Shao, the oldest in the group at nearly fifty, laughed as he tried to tempt Bai Lu with gourmet food.
Dr. Zhang, who was fast approaching her thirtieth birthday, poured Bai Lu some tea while reminding her.
"Xiao Bai, you absolutely mustn’t agree. Every female doctor under twenty-five in the hospital has been lured in by Dr. Shao with the same excuse."
Bai Lu made a knowing face, chuckled and thanked Dr. Zhang for the reminder. Then she said to Dr. Shao with a smile, "I have already dedicated every second of my personal time to the great cause of research, so thank you, Dr. Shao!"
Dr. Shao glared at Dr. Zhang, then reminded Bai Lu, "Xiao Bai, don’t forget, Dr. Zhang is also single."
Bai Lu immediately surrendered with her hands up, "Please, dear brothers, sisters, uncles, and aunts, spare me, I’m still young!"
Everyone was amused by Bai Lu and turned the conversation to other matters.
Somehow, the chat turned to the military officer who had been brought in for emergency treatment a few days ago.
"Tsk, he sure has a strong will to live. Several of his organs were hemorrhaging, and to top it off, he has a rare blood type. There wasn’t enough blood in the blood bank, so all the blood of the same type in hospitals around Capital City was called to Public Hospital. Plus, many official account users helped call for the public to donate blood. Normally, a patient like this would have to stay in the ICU for at least five to seven days, but he was transferred to a regular hospital room after just three days."
"Hey, I heard he’s a comrade of the Yan Family’s Young Master."
"Who said that?"
"Yan Xu came to visit the patient this afternoon, and the nurses all gathered around to watch for a while."
When Yan Xu was mentioned, everyone’s gaze simultaneously turned to Bai Lu.
A female doctor in her thirties asked Bai Lu, "Xiao Bai, you and Yan Xu are childhood sweethearts, right?"
Bai Lu never denied this, "Yes, we’ve known each other since we were very young."
"Then do you know if he has a girlfriend?"
Bai Lu was taken aback for a moment and then shook her head, "I’m not too sure about that. I’ve never thought to ask such personal questions."
The female doctor looked hopeful, "Could you, maybe, ask for us?"
Dr. Shao joked, "Xiao Ye, you’re over thirty. That’s quite an age gap, don’t you think?"
Dr. Ye cleared her throat, "Of course it’s not for me, I have a cousin who’s a junior at Jun School. Doesn’t their age and field of study match up perfectly? Really, it doesn’t have to go in that direction, being friends would be nice too."
Bai Lu felt a bit uncomfortable inside as Yan Xu became the subject of table talk.
"Dr. Ye, I’m sorry, but I can’t help with such personal matters."
Although Bai Lu was generally easygoing, when it came to matters of principle, she was very firm and principled.
She hated it when others tried to set her up, so there was no way she would do to Yan Xu what she disliked being done to herself.
Dr. Ye appeared somewhat disappointed, but seeing Bai Lu’s serious look, she didn’t dare to press any further.
Perhaps to avoid any awkwardness between Bai Lu and Dr. Ye, someone steered the conversation back to the topic of research subjects. Soon enough, the whole table was animatedly sharing their opinions, completely disregarding the gossip from before.
Dinner went on until past eight, and since everyone had to drive, no one drank any wine.
Bai Lu had mentioned earlier that she wanted to bring Yan Xu a midnight snack, so as soon as she got back to her car, she dialed Yan Xu’s phone.
"Young Master, what would you like for a midnight snack?"
On the other end, Yan Xu seemed slightly out of breath. "Dr. Bai, shouldn’t you know best what I should eat? Anyway, you probably wouldn’t let me have what I want to eat, so just bring whatever you think is appropriate."
Bai Lu suggested several foods Yan Xu could eat, and after thinking for a moment, Yan Xu said, "Then let’s go with soup dumplings, the ones from the store at the entrance of the community taste pretty good."
"Okay, what filling would you like?"
"You definitely won’t let me have crab’s eggs or seafood, so anything else is fine."
So it seemed this guy had a taste for dumplings filled with crab’s eggs or seafood.
He had liked seafood since he was a kid, and it looked like his tastes hadn’t changed much over the years.
Yan Xu had mentioned that the soup dumplings store wasn’t very big, but it had a lot of customers.
After Bai Lu parked the car, she went inside and saw a long line at the cashier.
Bai Lu checked the time, it was just past nine o’clock. There was still more than an hour before Yan Xu’s bedtime, so she should be able to make it.
Bai Lu arrived back at the Yan Family with the midnight snack just at ten o’clock.
Hearing the noise, Yan Xu came out to greet her and took the food from her hands, his gaze drifting across her face.
"You must be tired after a busy afternoon, right?"
As Bai Lu changed her shoes, she looked up and smiled at him, "It’s alright, it’s much easier than spending an afternoon in the operation room."
Yan Xu placed the food on the coffee table and turned to pour her a cup of warm water.
"Have some water to warm up."
Bai Lu took the cup and, holding it in both hands, drank a few sips.
"Did you just go exercise?"
Yan Xu nodded, "I was just sitting at home anyway, so I went out for a few laps."
Bai Lu had seen his rehabilitation plan for the day in the morning, and it didn’t include an evening run.
She sat down on the sofa and watched as Yan Xu opened the food container, the delicious aroma wafting out.
"Didn’t you complete today’s quota during the day? How many kilometers did you run tonight? That’s overdoing it, isn’t it?"
She knew he was anxious, but there had to be moderation in all things. Exceeding that would only have the opposite effect.
However, Yan Xu didn’t respond directly to Bai Lu’s comment, "I went to the hospital today..."
Bai Lu put down her cup, lazily nestled into the sofa, and looked up at him.
"A comrade of mine was seriously injured during a mission a few days ago, nearly lost his life. I visited him today and saw his wife holding their baby girl in the hospital room..."
"Originally, that mission should have been mine, but since I wasn’t there, he took it on..."
Bai Lu hadn’t known about this complication and felt sad for Yan Xu after hearing it.
She propped herself up and patted Yan Xu’s shoulder, "He’s alright now, isn’t he? You have to believe that he wouldn’t let anything happen to himself because he’s got a loving wife and a little daughter waiting for him at home!"
Yan Xu looked at her intently for a good while and then let out a long sigh.
"So, I actually understand very well why Grandpa wanted to find every way possible to get me to change careers. This time, I gave them quite a scare."
Seeing Yan Xu so emotionally down was a first for Bai Lu.
She hesitated for a moment and then, extending her arms, gently hugged Yan Xu.
"Everyone loves you, and as long as you think this is what you want, everyone will respect your choices."
