Chapter 107: Chapter 106: Turns out Little Yin Hu is Next Door

Meng Qianqian went next door.

The old lady didn’t exchange pleasantries with Meng Qianqian at all. As promised, she handed over the ladder to Meng Qianqian.

Meng Qianqian originally thought it was a simple repair, but upon climbing up, she found a large hole in the roof, with even the wooden frames broken.

She called to the old lady sitting in the courtyard, "Granny, do you have any wood and tiles?"

Usually, when people build houses, there’s some leftover bricks and tiles. However, wood tends to get disposed of. Meng Qianqian thought if the old lady didn’t have any, she’d have Wu Ge’er fetch some from the market.

The old lady, with her legs crossed, said, "Backyard wood shed, take it yourself!"

Her tone could hardly be called friendly.

Meng Qianqian didn’t take it to heart and leaped down from the roof effortlessly.

The old lady glanced at her.

Meng Qianqian passed through the main hall to the backyard. There were three rooms in total: one was locked, one was the kitchen, and the door to the middle room was half open, revealing a pile of tiles inside.

It should be the wood shed.

Meng Qianqian stepped inside.

When she clearly saw the scene before her, she suddenly stopped in her tracks.

This was a room with only a small window carved into the wall. The small window was covered with dirty, aged oiled paper, letting in just a faint trace of light through the cracks.

A pile of wood, covered in dust and cobwebs, was stacked in one corner. Beside it were neatly arranged tiles, also coated with webs and dust, some of them already broken.

The only somewhat normal objects in the room were the wooden boards and tiles. The rest consisted of a chaotic scattering of bones on the ground. Right in front of Meng Qianqian, hanging at face-level, was a skull staring directly at her.

The old lady’s eerie and hunched figure appeared at the doorway of the wood shed, blocking most of the light and making the already cold and gloomy room even more sinister.

"Found it? Still fixing the old woman’s roof?"

Her aged and raspy voice seemed to carry an infinite malice.

Meng Qianqian rolled up her sleeves, took a few steps forward, lifted a pile of wood, and turned to give the old lady a slight smile. "Found it, I’ll fix it right away!"

She stomped out of the room and came back to carry the tiles.

"Granny, do you have a hatchet? I’ll chop some wood."

Though a lady of noble birth, she handled manual labor with surprising finesse.

The old lady couldn’t help but glance at Meng Qianqian a few more times.

Nanny Wan, from her own courtyard, noticed Meng Qianqian working on the roof next door and immediately wanted to come and help.

Meng Qianqian said, "No need, I can handle it myself. You go fence off the pool."

Nanny Wan wasn’t skilled at carpentry or roof repairs; better to avoid her getting hurt.

"Alright!"

Bao Shu was climbing higher and higher, and the maids and older servants in the courtyard could barely keep an eye on her. Fencing off the pool was the right idea.

Nanny Li came out when she heard the commotion and looked at Meng Qianqian climbing up and down the roof. She hesitated to say something.

Where was the grace of a proper young lady in all this? Thankfully, they lived in this sparsely populated Feng Shui Lane, with no one to gossip.

"Be careful not to fall! A young lady should act like a young lady!"

"I know, Nanny!"

Meng Qianqian chopped through a piece of wood with a single strike of her hand.

Nanny Li: "..."

Forget it, forget it. At least she wasn’t moping around lifelessly.

Meng Qianqian patched up the large hole in the roof and spotted several other leaks, fixing them all while she was at it.

She returned the ladder, unused wood, and tiles where they belonged and tidied up the courtyard.

"Granny, it’s finished. If there’s nothing else, I’ll head back now."

The old lady sat on a stone bench, ignoring Meng Qianqian without a single word of thanks.

Meng Qianqian returned to her own courtyard.

Nanny Wan approached her, muttering, "Miss, you’ve been working for half a day, and that old woman didn’t even thank you! I knew it’d be like this!"

Meng Qianqian asked curiously, "What do you mean?"

Nanny Wan said, "Sigh, that old woman isn’t easy to deal with. When we first moved in, thinking we were neighbors, I was the first to visit her house. I even brought some Osmanthus Cake made by Lady Du. Who knew she’d throw the cake right out in front of me! After that, Nanny Li said no more uninvited visits."

Meng Qianqian nodded thoughtfully and said, "After the massacre here, people in the lane moved away one after another. Those who stayed likely have their own reasons—either nowhere else to go, or... unwilling to leave."

Nanny Wan didn’t understand. "Why wouldn’t they want to leave?"

Meng Qianqian replied empathetically, "Perhaps they’re waiting for the day the case is solved. That old lady might also be a grieving family member of a victim."

The bones she saw in the wood shed might belong to someone the old lady never managed to say goodbye to.

Nanny Wan sighed, "In that case, she’s quite pitiful too."

This left a strong impression on Meng Qianqian.

Some people can wait decades for a truth. She should learn from that patience and not rush into things.

The real culprit needed to be caught, and revenge had to be exacted. But all of this could only happen if she stayed alive.

Speaking of which, after that black-clad man died, why hadn’t his accomplices come after her?

At the Wan Hua Tower.

Lady Yan glared coldly at the three black-clad men in front of her.

"You’re bold enough to go behind my back and attack the heir to the Ghost Gate Thirteen Needles?"

The leading man in black replied, "She killed Fifth Brother. Last night, Third and Fourth Brothers also died because of her."

Lady Yan scolded through gritted teeth, "If your brothers hadn’t provoked her, would they have died at her hands? How many times do I have to tell you, until I uncover her origins, no one is to touch her!"

The leading man in black retorted, "Does mastering the Ghost Gate Thirteen Needles necessarily make her its heir? Lady Yan, what are you obsessing over all these years?"

Lady Yan snapped, "Mind your own business!"

After leaving the Wan Hua Tower, Second Brother asked, "Big Brother, are we really not avenging Third, Fourth, and Fifth Brothers?"

Each of the three brothers had died differently.

Fifth Brother had been poisoned but ultimately died from a rib piercing his spleen.

Fourth Brother had his heart shattered in a single blow, which was relatively quick.

Third Brother had it the worst—his spine was broken, every bone in his body disjointed. He had died excruciatingly, right in front of his brothers.

The leader of the black-clad men said, "I didn’t expect Lu Yuan to have such a formidable ally by his side."

Other than Fifth Brother falling for that girl’s trick, the other two brothers had been killed by a terrifyingly skilled individual.

Sixth Brother said, "Big Brother, just say the word. Do we kill her or not? Whatever you decide, we’ll follow!"

The leader of the black-clad men replied coldly, "Of course, she must die. But there’s no need to rush. As long as she’s in the Capital City, we will always find an opportunity!"

He didn’t believe Lu Yuan could watch over that girl every moment of every day!

The Grand Commander couldn’t avoid attending court or managing state affairs, could he?

Sooner or later, Lu Yuan would leave her unguarded, and then he would personally take her life to avenge his brothers!

Back at Feng Shui Lane.

A man in dark robes and white hair had been tinkering all morning and had finally repaired the Feng Shui Compass!

"Hahaha... hahaha!"

He laughed exuberantly, "I knew I was still this brilliant!"

He lifted the compass, adjusted the direction of the pointer, and suddenly, the pointer moved, spinning several times before stopping at a specific direction.

His expression froze. "Little Yin Hu... is next door?"
