Chapter 22: mated to him
Eamon was still shocked and Damon decided not to say any more words that could rattle him.
"You could go to the library and do some research on the topic. Try and find some clarification." Damon suggested and Eamon offered him a weak smile.
"Okay." He agreed and Damon watched him leave, silently marvelling at the unexpected turn of events.
This was going to be interesting.
Eamon turned the large oak doors that lead to the castle’s huge library, his heart pounding from both dread and anticipation of the revelations that awaited him.
The shock he had received from Damon’s suggestion had started to wear off as he walked over to the librarian.
He was an old man, well over sixty years and his light brown eyes held a wisdom that was inspiring as he looked at Eamon.
"General, what brings you here today?" He asked, his voice polite and professional.
"I am looking for information on dragons. Particularly how they find their mates. Could you happen to have books on the topic?" Eamon asked.
The old man was thoughtfully silent.
"Follow me." He eventually said and Eamon followed him down a narrow corridor that was bordered by tall hovering bookshelfs.
The walk was quite long and they eventually stopped before a small section of the library that was reserved with a tiny cardboard sign hanging overhead.
Entry reserved for authorized personnels only.
The sign stated and the sound of keys opening a locked door caught Eamon’s attention.
The anticipation that was building up within him increased at the realization that he was about to read information that was obviously top secret and sensitive.
After opening a few more locks, the metallic door swung open and Eamon walked in after the librarian.
The old man walked over to a tall shelf and tiptoed, pulling out three medium sized books.
"This is all we have on dragon mates. It majorly consists of research journals." The librarian informed him as he handed him the books.
Eamon offered him a polite smile and grateful nod.
"I suggest you start with this one, its the most detailed." The man offered helpfully as he pointed at the middle book.
"I will. Thank you." Eamon replied and proceeded to find a quiet table in a corner so that he could settle down and read the books.
He started with the librarian’s recommendation and the brown leather bound book was a little dusty when he touched it.
He flipped it open and read on with growing curiousity, his eyes widening as he turned more and more pages.
The things he was reading were mostly new to him.
This book basically narrated the way dragons came to evolve and start mating with humans.
Dragons being magical creatures was not news but this theory made it interesting.
Thousands of years ago, dragons only had one form and the very first dragon that harnessed his magic to take on the form of a human wanted to mate with his human mate. Other dragons learned how to do the very same thing after years of practice, most for the convenience a smaller body frame offered and others to mate.
According to this journal, dragons chose their mates using scent. In both male and female dragons, their mate’s scent made them feel at home and it was described as highly enticing and irrestable.
Eamon skipped through the rest of the data, his eyes looking for a part that could give him insight on his current situation.
Was it possible for a male dragon to find his mate in another male?
His breath caught at his throat when he found a phrase on the topic. It was a brief reference but it was clear enough.
Both female and male dragons could find their mates in people of the same gender but under rare occasions.
Usually, this happened when a dragon was taking on a second mate after the death of their first one...
Eamon shut the book, his mind racing as he thought of Valerion.
Had the dragon lost his first mate?
It was common knowledge even to humans that losing of a mate could scar a dragon deeply.
The loss was a kin to losing the other half of your soul and in some cases, a dragon could die from grief shortly afterwards.
It was that severe and as much as he didn’t want to, Eamon found himself feeling bad for Valerion.
What had the dragon been through?
Eamon was no longer as concerned at the possibility of being Valerion’s mate as he pondered the question.
He was suddenly seeing Valerion in a new light. Behind the majestic, cold and proud man he portrayed was possibly a hurt and injured soul.
Eamon stood from his table, his face thoughtful as he went to find the librarian.
"Can I take these? I will make sure return them by the end of this week." Eamon requested.
"Sure." The librarian agreed and Eamon headed to his room where he safely tucked the books away.
He could read them later but at the moment, he needed to find Valerion.
Even though he knew it was risky on his end to seek out a creature that could hypnotize him, Eamon needed to confirm his findings.
Of course he was scared... scared of what this could all mean but he gulped down his fear as he went down the rocky stairs that led to the dungeon.
Valerion was surprised to see him so soon.
"Eamon..." He called his name, his voice neutral as their eyes met.
"We need to talk." Eamon said, his voice serious and Valerion was quiet for a while.
His metallic grey eyes subtly scanned Eamon and he wasn’t pleased to notice how tense this man was around him.
The faint hint of fear in his scent also darkened Valerion’s mood as a thought settled in his mind.
His mate feared him and...it was all his fault.
The steady and majestic pose Valerion stood in crumbled as he let himself sit on the floor, the exhaustion of staying tied up for so long finally washing over him.
His face remained nonchalant as he looked up at Eamon.
"Talk about what?" He asked.
"I know the reason I am drawn to your scent." Eamon started and Valerion wasn’t so surprised. Of course the man had done his research.
"Am I your mate?" Eamon asked, his voice hesitant and he could hear his heart thump loudly as he waited for Valerion’s response.
