Chapter 20: drawn to your scent
Chapter 20: drawn to your scent
The night seemed much longer for Eamon as he joined the soldiers at the wall for his occasional night watch.
With only three hours to dawn, Eamon was quite eager to have his watch done so that he could get some much needed rest.
As the first rays of sunlight started to lighten the horizon, Eamon readily gave up his post to the next soldier and proceeded to make his way to his assigned chambers.
Being an army general came with a few perks and laying in a decent bed and sleeping off for at least six hours was something Eamon looked forward to.
He was nearing his destination only to pause in his tracks when a strong and irresistibly appealing scent hit his nostrils and threatened to take control of all his senses.
It was an intoxicating blend of musk, an earthy undertone and a hint of something smokey.
Eamon felt his control over his body sway as he followed the scent that reminded him of a quiet rainy evening at home as he lay in a couch by the fire place.
It was perfection and he loved the way it relaxed his entire body.
His brows furrowed slightly into a small frown when he found himself at the beginning of the rocky staircase that led down into the dungeons.
Eamon hesitantly followed the scent, his mind screaming for him to turn back and run yet his instincts were hooked.
He was attracted to this scent and he had to confirm where it was coming from.
A part of his intuition thought of Valerion and he was proved right as he stood infront of the cell where the scent was originating from.
"Eamon..." Valerion smirked like he had been expecting him.
Valerion had decided to release his scent, faintly hoping that it could lure his mate and it gave him the slightest happiness and relief to know that it had worked.
This man was attracted to his scent but he couldn’t know for sure until he asked.
Eamon glared at the dragon as he tried to keep his head clear, cursing himself inwardly as his eyes wandered, taking in the enticing view of the half naked dragon infront of him.
Valerion drew closer, dragging the chains that held him until he was standing much closer to the metallic rods that formed the door.
Eamon backed away as he felt the scent become more potent, threatening to take control of all his senses.
"Eamon, what are you doing here?" Valerion asked, feigning curiousity.
Eamon gritted his teeth as he fought the urge to step closer to this man.
"I am just doing a routine check on the prisoners." Eamon lied and Valerion smiled faintly, seeing right through him.
"You are lying." He pointed out and Eamon’s eyes threw daggers at him.
"No, I am not." He hissed, denying the accusation.
"You were drawn here by my scent." Valerion stated and he got his positive reply when Eamon’s eyes widened slightly.
So, he had indeed been drawn by his scent, the confirmation made Valerion happy to know that this human male was not any different from dragons.
Dragons were able to scent their mates and it was something that they couldn’t resist.
"You..." Eamon whispered, speechless and shocked at how this dragon had known that.
Valerion tilted his head slightly to the side, exposing his scent glands and the action had Eamon taking involuntary steps towards him until he stood a step away from the cage.
"Why don’t you let me free, Eamon?" Valerion whispered, his voice low and hypnotic in a way that made Eamon sigh helplessly as he shock his head, trying to snap out of his daze.
"No." He whispered, his voice quivering with restraint.
Valerion smiled, amused as he looked at the man that still held onto his self control.
"Why am I drawn to your scent?" Eamon asked, his voice shaky as he tried to stand his ground.
"Let me go and I will tell you why." Valerion breathed, his voice seductive and his metallic grey eyes hot with desire as he inhaled Eamon’s scent.
Even through his haze, Eamon had to admit that this dragon was smart to use his scent to lure him into a trap.
A trap where Eamon could find himself letting this dragon out of his cell.
"That’s not going to happen." Eamon assured as he took shaky steps away until his back hit the wall that was about a meter away from the cell.
"Your self control is annoying." Valerion admitted, his voice quite irritated.
Had this man been a dragon, he couldn’t have been able to resist his scent. Dragons just couldn’t resist their mate’s scent but Eamon was human and that made things different.
"Clever dragon. Apart from being a fire breathing beast, you are a wizard too. I should have been more wary." Eamon sneered, his words hitting Valerion like a bullet through the heart.
He couldn’t have cared much if he had heard those words from any other person but it hurt because they were from his mate.
His mate thought he was a beast. And he was but Valerion didn’t want this man thinking of him that way.
A small painful smile that didn’t reach his eyes tugged at his lips as he stepped away from the cage.
"Run along Eamon, before I decide to break out of these chains." Valerion warned, his voice serious and Eamon didn’t need any more words to leave.
He walked away hurriedly, not turning to look at the dragon who had messed around with his head and emotions.
It was much lighter outside when Eamon made his way out of the dark underground tunnel.
His exhaustion and confusion washed over him and he decided not to think much about his recent encounter with Valerion until he had gotten some rest.
The soft pillow that welcomed his head once he lay down was deeply soothing and Eamon got sucked into a deep sleep shortly afterwards.
And as his breath turned even, he was pulled into the realm of dreams and he had a dream.
A dream about Valerion.
