Chapter 17: flirting with him

"No you won’t. Because the only way you are getting out of this place is if you are dead." Eamon said, his voice cool and certain.

He didn’t do well with threats and this dragon was threatening him.

His words struck a nerve in Valerion’s cold heart at the thought that his mate could not hesitate to hurt him but then again, this man wasn’t a dragon and he felt nothing.

Valerion’s hatred for humans burned, particularly for the one that was standing before him.

These wretched creatures were the ones that had killed his precious mate and child two centuries back and now he had found his second mate among them.

He couldn’t wait to get his hands on this man.

Valerion smirked, a small smile that didn’t reach his cold ashen grey eyes.

"You will be sorry once I get my hands on you." He whispered and for some reason, Eamon flinched, a faint shiver running down his spine as he backed away from the cave.

"In your dreams." He assured as he turned and walked away, not throwing the creature a second look.

....

Valerion gritted his teeth in anger as he watched Eamon walk away. All he wanted to do was to yell and call him back but he knew he couldn’t.

This man felt nothing for him while he was stuck with a gnawing desire to claim him, protect and cherish him.

The instinctual part of him was acting up now that he had found his mate and Valerion knew there was little to nothing that he could do about it.

A soft sigh escaped his lips as he let his taut muscles relax.

He leaned onto the wall, exhaustion and pain from the poison in his wounds washing over him.

Valerion had come after this human castle because he had been tired of living a bland life. Over the years, he had avenged the death of his family by torturing humans but it had not helped to ease the pain that threatened to suffocate him.

The hole in his heart had only become more and more hallow with the more loss and suffering he caused.

Valerion was so damaged and hurt but seeing the human male that had talked back to him so boldly did something to his rock hard heart.

After centuries, Valerion could feel his heart beat and his mind perceived it as hope for a positive change.

This...Eamon was already affecting him with his presence and he was at a loss because there was nothing he could do about it.

Valerion lowered his head as he let his thoughts take over.

After all the horrible things he had done, he did not really believe that he was cut out for redemption.

Night fell so hard and the relentless coldness of his cave did nothing to help his situation.

Normally, dragons had a higher tolerance to the cold but he was quite terribly injured and his healing had slowed because of the excess blood loss and poison.

Valerion tried not to shiver as he saw a dim light and heard the foot steps that were drawing closer to him.

His nostrils picked up the familiar intoxicating scent that caused his heart to race.

Eamon...

Valerion smirked once he saw the man that was turning the lock on his door.

"Are you that eager to die, Eamon?" He asked and the man threw him a calm look.

"Try anything stupid and I won’t hesitate to stab you." Eamon assured, his voice low yet certain as he finally opened the door and stepped into the cell.

He was carrying a small basin and a wash cloth which he put down as he stopped quite a distance from the dragon that stood, leisurely leaning against a wall.

"Vicious." Valerion drawled as he took in the sight of the man before him.

Damon ignored him.

"Why don’t you came a little closer, Eamon?" Valerion baited to see whether this man was an easy target.

Those alert and sharp eyes told him otherwise.

"I plan to but I am going to fasten your restraints first. I don’t want to lose my neck just yet." Eamon replied, his voice dripping with a faint sarcasm that made Valerion smirk in amusement.

This man was cautious and...he had all the right reasons to be.

Even though he was his mate, instincts and emotions were equally strong and as much as he desired to protect him, Valerion hated him too.

Hurting him when he was in such a conflicted state was certainly possible.

Those alert coffee brown eyes locked on his in a way that took his breath away.

"Stay still, dragon." Eamon said once he was done with tightening Valerion’s restraints.

Valerion silently watched him close the distance between them before the small white towel in his hand started to clean his torso.

His abdominal muscles flinched slightly at the feeling of the cold cloth on his skin.

Eamon shot him a straight look.

"I said stay still." He repeated and Valerion grimaced.

"You are quite bossy, little human." He stated, his voice quite irritated from being bossed around by this man.

"Well, get used to it." Eamon retorted, not at all bothered by the complaint as he continued his work with a seriousness that had Valerion chuckle.

"What’s funny?" He asked, his brows furrowing slightly in irritation as he looked up at the annoying dragon that was effortlessly getting on his nerves.

His genuinely amused smile and rare yet magnetic grey eyes had Eamon swallow as he averted his eyes.

"You are." The dragon shrugged and Eamon bit down his tongue to avoid saying more.

All he had to do was finish up cleaning his wounds so that he did not get an infection. The king still wanted this dragon alive for some reason.

"You look like a person of a reasonable rank, why did you have to come and clean up a prisoner?" Valerion asked, his body starting to burn up and his senses triggered from standing so close to this man... without being able to touch him.

It was the worst kind of torture.

Eamon glared up at him, his patience wearing thin.

"Are you always this talkative?" He asked and Valerion smirked.

"Only with you." Valerion replied and for some reason, the tips of Eamon’s ears burned.

He stepped away from the dragon.

"I am going to leave and ask someone else to come and do this." Eamon hissed as his eyes met those of the dragon.

Valerion was thoughtfully silent.

"Fine by me." He nonchalantly agreed and Eamon turned his back, his irritation and frustration growing.

The king had been very clear about his order.

He was the only soldier he trusted enough to manage this dragon.

His exhaled deeply before he turned to look at the dragon that he was still stuck with for the next few minutes.

"Unfortunately, I am stuck with you." He groaned and Valerion smirked as his eyes roamed his body.

"I don’t mind that." He replied with a teasing smile that had Eamon blink.

Was this dragon flirting with him!?
