Chapter 75: Chapter 24: Only Desperate Efforts

On the second day, early in the morning, there was a commotion on the training grounds, with a group of Radiations brawling.

Their intense fighting was so noisy that all the newcomers were roused from sleep.

Everyone gathered at the railing, entranced as they watched the black-handed ones train outside.

By almost noon, the group finally stopped, and then a large batch of Japanese came inside.

Leading them was Tanabu, with Rousi also present, along with several others I didn’t recognize who also seemed to be in leadership roles.

Just by looking at their appearance, you could tell—clothing, weapons, everything was very distinctive.

One of them even had an ape on a leash.

The ape was incredibly strong, no less formidable than a gorilla, with glossy black fur and lively eyes.

But around its neck was a metal collar connected to a heavy chain.

The Japanese man leading the ape wore a black leather jacket and had six scars on his face, as if they were made by some kind of claw.

"Tanabu-sama, this time you must allocate more newcomers to our hunting group, we’re running out," the man with the Six Paths Scars said excitedly with a laugh.

Tanabu glanced at him, "Kimura, the quality of newcomers has been poor lately."

Six Paths Scar Kimura made the ape crouch on the ground and sat on it, "That’s exactly why you should send them to me; I’m not picky!"

"In my opinion, we shouldn’t bother with talent or education, just test strength. Take the superior glass people for yourself, and give the rest to me."

Ohno Shinkachi glared at him, "It’s Tanabu-sama’s decision to make, not yours to call."

Tanabu just smiled faintly at their quarrel, turning instead to a topless black-handed one, "Hirao, does your labor group need people?"

Before he could answer, Six Paths Scars interjected, "How could Sea Serpent Hirao possibly need people? His labor group has the most people; if anything, he should send some of the useless ones over to me."

Sea Serpent Hirao looked at him coldly, then respectfully said to Tanabu, "My lord, the labor group isn’t short on people, but we’re ready to accept transfers if needed."

Tanabu was noncommittal, but then showed concern, "How is Tanabu doing?"

Sea Serpent replied, "Much better, he was going to come over today but I stopped him."

"Hmm, let him rest well. I’ll take charge myself this time," Tanabu said, giving Sasaki a look.

Sasaki immediately scurried over to where the newcomers were behind the fence, leading everyone to the center of the training grounds.

"You! Come up!"

Sasaki pointed at someone in front, who approached with trembling legs, not understanding why he was singled out, yet stood erect in an attempt to appear brave, as if being reviewed by his owner.

"Name!"

"Zhou Fangjiang..."

Sasaki ripped off his prisoner tag and threw it to a scribe at a desk.

"Crime."

Zhou Fangjiang said in a low voice, "Murder... manslaughter."

Sasaki didn’t ask why he had killed, simply asking casually, "Work experience?"

Zhou Fangjiang blankly replied, "No employment..."

Sasaki inquired further, "Then what skills do you have? What are you good at?"

At this point, everyone knew that they were being assessed for their utility.

If they were deemed useless, the consequences would be dire. This was a moment that would determine their fate.

Immediately, Zhou Fangjiang eagerly stated, "I can make desserts! My stuff is really tasty; the neighbors all say so!"
