Chapter 49: Making you happy
Chapter 49: Making you happy
Two days later at Diana’s apartment.
’’Aunty Zhang is on a day off. She caught flu so my mom asked her to recover at her home...’’ Diana stepped to the side, letting him enter.
Aunty Zhang was the nanny who has been living with her in this apartment since she was young. The woman used to take care of her back when she was in high school.
Initially, she was wary of the woman. But she was very warm and kind and it made Diana feel closer to her. She felt more like a family in this huge city.
She had a bodyguard too. Robin. The man was assigned by her father and Robin was also her driver. When he wasn’t driving her around, she barely got to see him. But unlike Aunty Zhang, Robin was very professional and he never got involved in personal conversations.
Hence, the only person she was close to was Aunty Zhang.
After she turned 18, the woman moved back to her family and only came here to do the household work.
’’She is kind,’’ Maxim said, removing his shoes.
’’Huh?" Diana snapped out of her thoughts.
’’Your mom is kind.’’
Diana kept quiet as she walked inside. After all, he did not have to know that her mother gave her Aunty Zhang a day off so that the lady would not infect her.
According to her mother, if she caught a cold, she would look pale and sickly which was not good for her because she could be called to Beijing at any time for any important event or party.
Her mother even added—’God forbid if you start developing dark circles, or permanently pale or sickly face then it would affect your future marriage prospects. Just the thought of it is giving me goosebumps, baby!’
Hence, the day off for Aunty Zhang.
’’We are halfway there, aren’t we?" Hours later, Diana slumped on Maxim’s knee.
He was sitting on the couch and she was sprawled on the floor like an octopus. Her head was lolling off on his knee while her hand was swung over the couch.
’’I hate studies,’’ she mumbled.
’’You hate it because you keep forcing yourself all the time. You are doing good already. Take it easy,’’ Maxim sighed.
Diana glanced at him, ’’What do you know?" Daisy has not scored that well in the past few semesters and their parents have been miraculously calm.
It almost felt like the calm before a storm and Diana wanted to make the atmosphere more neutral by getting good marks.
After all, she was soon going to drop a bomb on them after graduating.
So, it was better to coax them so that they can cope with the shock later.
’’For now, I know that you should stop sitting on the floor,’’ Maxim frowned.
’’It’s comfortable here,’’ Diana removed her head from his knee as she tilted her head to look at him.
He grabbed her elbow and without a warning, he tugged her up to the couch such that she was sitting beside him, ’’You...’’ Diana glared at him.
Maxim nonchalantly closed the textbooks placed on the coffee table, ’’Stop stressing over unnecessary things.’’
’’How are they unnecessary, Warner? Not everyone is as god gifted as you,’’ Diana leaned back on the couch, ’’I need to do well. I need to ace all the upcoming semesters. We have one more year left after this. By the end of the next year, we will be graduating. I...’’
She covered her face with both her palms.
Maxim wanted to tell her that he was not having any better days either. Working during the day and studying at nights were turning out to be harder than he thought.
He was considering skipping this year and applying to sit for next year’s exam to graduate early. It was possible since their university practiced grade skipping.
He also wanted to ask her if she wanted to join him on that or if she will be able to manage it.
But looking at her distressed face, all that came out of his mouth was, ’’What can I do to make you feel better?"
"I am fine,’’ Diana whispered, shaking her head. She was just overstressed, overthinking, and overanalyzing everything in her life.
’’Do you have a kitchen here?" Maxim pushed himself to his feet.
Diana glanced at him like he was speaking an alien language, ’’This is a house. Why do you think there won’t be a kitchen?"
Maxim extended both his hands towards her, ’’Lead the way.’’
Diana glanced at his outstretched hands. She placed her palms atop his palms which looked much larger in contrast to hers.
Before she could dwell on that thought, he effortlessly tugged her up from the couch and she was almost knocked into his chest, ’’You are too much,’’ she glared at him.
He shrugged.
As she led him to the kitchen, she could not help but be curious, ’’What are you trying to do?"
’’Making you happy,’’ Maxim replied straightforwardly as he looked around the kitchen and started gathering stuff on the kitchen counter.
Her apartment was rather over the top flashy, expensive, and the extravagant kind which she never liked before but the sight of Maxim standing there, gathering ingredients on the kitchen counter made her smile. It looked homely somehow. She never pegged him as a guy who would do something like this.
’’You know how to cook,’’ she remarked.
Maxim paused while putting on the apron.
’’Just a few things.’’
She strode towards him and tied the black apron near his back, ’’I am going to announce this to your fangirls tomorrow. I can’t wait to see them hounding you in all those throaty voices.’’
Maxim grabbed her hand and pulled her in front of him, ’’You are not going to do any of that,’’ he looked at her, thoroughly exasperated.
’’Watch me,’’ she laughed and pulled back from him before she lifted herself and sat on the kitchen counter.
’’You are not going to do that. You hear me?" Maxim grabbed her shoulders and shook her.
The smile on her face died as she winced.
Maxim froze, ’’What happened?"
