Crashing into an Old Flame
Chapter 47: Far from the truth

Chapter 47: Far from the truth

Diana fled from the crime scene with the excuse of dinner.

Why crime scene? Because having heart-racing moments for her best friend, and being annoyed with him even when he is doing exactly what she wanted by not interfering in her matters, was nothing less than a crime in Diana’s dictionary.

Hence, the crime scene.

And somehow, she was beginning to be muddled.

Maybe, just like Maxim had said, things were becoming too convenient with them. Living under the same roof with him lending her a shoulder whenever she needed was making her head muddled and she was confusing their friendship with weird stuff.

Before she confused her feelings even further, Diana knew she had to clear her head first.

She had dinner with Ivy because Logan was not around and Diana concluded the man was still with Maxim’s mom, escorting her around.

And Maxim was on a work phone call for the past hour.

’’You said you went to buy groceries, right?" Diana asked Ivy while patting Angel’s back, trying to lull her to sleep.

Both the women were sitting next to each other on the couch in the living room and Ivy was absentmindedly fiddling with the laptop on her lap, drawing the strands of her game character’s hair.

At times like this, Diana always wondered why Ivy was doing odd jobs when she was this capable. But as much as she wanted to know, she did not want to overstep her boundaries. What if she accidentally poked a sore spot?

After all, a month ago, she would not have known she would be searching for any kind of job to make ends meet.

Unlike the other days, Ivy’s movements were slightly sloppy, ’’Huh?... Y-Yes, grocery. Why do you ask?" she asked without raising her head to look at her.

Diana frowned, ’’You came back empty-handed,’’ she lowered her voice because Angel was starting to doze off.

’’Oh, I did not... find what I was looking for.’’

Then why were you gone for so long?

Before Diana could voice her question, Ivy spoke up once again, ’’Dee, are you still looking for a job?"

Diana nodded. Although she was financially stable for a long time after selling her diamond earrings and bracelet, she still needed a stable source of income.

If her parents were to track her whereabouts and if... they forced her to separate her from Angel, then she could only rely on the law. And for that, she would need to have a stable source of income, or else... it would be easy for her to lose Angel.

Diana felt exhausted at the mere thought, ’’Work from home is so complicated. It’s hard to get a decent job...’’ She wanted to write books but she lacked motivation and secondly, she wanted to be practical here by not starting from scratch.

"You don’t necessarily have to work from home, right?" Ivy placed her laptop aside.

’’I need to take care of Angel so it’s not possible for me to do 9 to 5 jobs if that is what you are trying to say,’’ Diana shook her head.

Ivy sighed, ’’What am I here for, Dee? I can take care of Angel when you are out working."

"Absolutely not,’’ Diana pushed herself up from the couch, deciding to mark it as the end of the conversation.

’’You don’t trust me?" Ivy pouted.

’’It’s not about trust, Ivy. If it was like that, I would never have left you alone with Angel,’’ Firstly, Diana trusted people that Maxim chose to keep around himself, and secondly, both Ivy and Logan were good people. It was not hard to tell. But... ’’Ivy, you are so young. Barely 23 or 24 maybe and you have your dreams. While I don’t know why you are working here but regardless, I don’t want to impose on you any more than I already have.’’

Ivy pushed herself to her feet, ’’I am not doing this for free. You can gift me wine. Expensive ones in the future. I’ve heard you have good taste in them.’’

’’Huh? How do you know?"

’’Sir says so. And he also said that you like trying new desserts hence I keep making one every other day.’’

Diana was speechless, ’’He is...’’ she paused, unable to find a proper word.

’’So cute?"

Diana shook her head, ’’He is too much.’’

Ivy laughed, ’’And of course, I like spending time with Angel. I have said my part already and if you don’t let me take care of her while you work, I will be so mad and disappointed. You know Dee how genuine I am—’’

’’Shh..’’ Diana shut the chatterbox off, ’’I will think about it.’’

As Diana lay on the bed later that night, she could not help but think about Ivy’s words.

She was probably the best person she could trust Angel with.

But a job had its requirements. Certificates, resume, work experience, etc etc and she had none with her at the moment.

Diana picked her phone up and scrolled through the jobs she had looked for. She removed the ’work from home’ filter and more job options showed up.

She handpicked a few and decided to send inquiries but just as she turned in to her mail, a certain ID caught her attention.

A mail from ’Artemis Hospital & Research Center’

Except for her family, people in her circle mostly assumed that she majored in business like her elder sister but it was not the truth. It was far... from the truth.

*Flashback*

Diana glanced at the biology lab in conflict. It has been more than an hour since she was reprimanded by the professor over her practical grades.

She thought Mathematics was going to be her only doom, that is until practical grades came into the picture.

After a long time of standing there and staring at the closed room, Diana made her way to the cafeteria.

Taking her food tray, she went to the empty table in the corner and fiddled with the fork.

A shadow loomed over her head and by the time she tilted her head, she found Maxim sitting on the opposite chair.

It felt like just yesterday when they met for the first time. He was the prettiest boy she ever saw and it did not help that he was a head shorter than her, making her ever so protective of him.

But now, she was the short one amongst them.
