Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 40: Line
Chapter 40: Line
Diana’s confusion disappeared when she saw his face zooming closer to hers.
Her breath hitched when Maxim raised his other hand, pressing his thumb on her lips before he... kissed his finger, the only thing that separated his lips from hers.
’Thump’
’Thump’
’Thump’
As she watched his eyes fluttering close, the sound of her rapid heartbeats echoed in her own ears.
Her system was malfunctioning. What in the world was she being so nervous for?
She concluded it was because of all the adventure-inducing things she has done in the past hour. And secondly, this was the first time a man has been this close to her.
Luckily, it was Maxim or she might have fainted due to trepidation. She told herself.
’’Oh my god, kids these days... They are not patient at all. Let’s not disturb them for now,’’ In the background, Hazel sounded embarrassed but Diana could trace the obvious glee in her voice. They had almost approached them at some point so it was not hard to eavesdrop on their conversation, ’’Where do you live, Aunty?"
’’You don’t need to bother. You already helped me...’’ Diana heard her grandmother speak and she slowly looked from above Maxim’s shoulder, noticing both the women walking away towards their car.
In Maxim’s car.
"What was that?" Maxim glanced at the woman who was twiddling with her fingers.
Diana peeked at him, ’’Thanks for helping me back there,’’ she cleared her throat, ’’That was my maternal grandmother.’’
’’You told me that,’’ Maxim focused on the road.
"My Mom is an American, my dad is Chinese,’’ she said, ’’During my initial months in the States, I used to live with my grandparents before I moved out and lived in that apartment with my caretaker.’’
Maxim was quiet. It was rare for her to talk about her family. Even after knowing her for years, he did not know much about them.
’’Regardless, they don’t know I am here now and I don’t want them to know,’’ Diana turned around and pressed her face against the windshield.
Her silence was enough for him to understand that she did not wish to discuss it further. Maxim glanced at her side profile, ’’Stop looking depressed. Do you want food?"
"Maybe pizza?" Diana turned to look at him as he stopped the car.
’’At this hour?"
’’It can pass off as brunch,’’ Diana blinked when she noticed their surroundings, ’’Why are we here at the hospital?"
’’To get a CT scan,’’ he placed his palm on the back of her head, ’’Does it hurt?"
Diana’s lips twitched, ’’I was bluffing back there. It did not hurt that much.’’
’’We are still getting it checked.’’
’’It really is nothing,’’ she swatted away his hand, ’’Trust me. I can’t feel it at all.’’
Maxim glanced at her doubtfully.
’’Really,’’ she leaned back on the seat helplessly, ’’Why did Ivy even tell you that I am here?"
"Because you didn’t bother to tell me?" Maxim stepped on the accelerator.
Diana rolled her eyes, ’’I. don’t. want. to. cause. troubles. for. you.’’
’’Noone. is. going. to. revoke. my. medical. license,’’ he mimicked her voice.
Diana laughed but her smile disappeared soon, ’’Why was my grandmother here in the first place?"
"Someone was causing trouble for her but it has been settled. Don’t worry,’’ Although she said that yet Diana looked anything but worried about her grandmother.
Diana sighed as she leaned back on the car seat. Whoever messed with that lady... God save them.
Once they reached the mansion, Maxim stepped on the brakes as he got off the car to open the door for her.
"You are not coming in?" Diana asked him as she alighted the car.
"I need to go back to work,’’ he pointed towards the scrub in the backseat.
’’Don’t tell me you left someone dying on the operating table,’’ Diana glanced at him suspiciously.
Maxim rolled his eyes at her exaggerated expression, ’’I was worried about you.’’
’’So sweet of you,’’ she smiled, ruffling his hair casually.
He raised a brow, not interrupting her actions.
Diana cleared her throat as she retracted her hand, "In fact, I wanted to ask you something.’’
’’Yeah?"
’’Back there, when you helped me hide from my grandmother, why did you say that I should not hate you for that?"
Maxim tilted his head to the side as he stepped back from her. He observed her questioning face for a moment before he said, ’’Because friends don’t do that.’’
’’Huh?" Diana was confused.
’’We talked about being friends, right?" he asked.
She nodded, ’’Of course. We are friends,’’ What was there to talk about except for his stubborn indecisiveness?
’’Friends don’t...’’ he lowered his head and leaned closer to her, leaving barely a few inches gap between their lips, ’’...lurk this close. I didn’t want you to be offended.’’
Her heart skipped a beat and Diana found it strange. She was losing her mind and heart amidst all this stress for sure, ’’But I am not offended at all. You know anything is fine between us.’’
’’No, it isn’t,’’ Maxim straightened up, ’’There is a line in friendship which should not be crossed.’’
Since you wanted us to be friends, here we are but that’s all it is. I will be a friend to you, nothing more and nothing less. With that thought, he took a step back from her.
Diana nodded, ’’Yes, maybe,’’ Although she felt like his words meant more than she was able to comprehend but she agreed with him on some levels.
They have known each other for so long but maybe both of them sensed each other’s sore spots.
Maxim never probed about her family probably because he felt like she did not want to talk about them. And Diana had no inkling about who was there in his family.
That should be the friendship line he was talking about.
’’Also...’’ Diana glanced at him, ’’If you want me and Angel to stay here, then don’t meddle in my matters.’’
’’Of course, I won’t,’’ Maxim was surprisingly so cooperative. She expected him to turn the facts or argue about this.
’’Really?" she asked him, suspicion apparent on her face.
As he nodded, Diana flashed a smile at him before she turned around and walked inside the mansion.
Once she was out of his sight, Maxim took out his phone and called Logan, ’’Did you contact the lawyer?... Good job,’’ he hung up the call.
He glanced at the closed door innocently. Since he was the one to throw the punch, then this matter should be his matter too, right?
