Chapter 289: Small talks

Helian Chen raised an eyebrow.

The secretary glanced at his phone, visibly flustered, ’’President, Madam has left the hospital...’’

A frown appeared on his face, ’’Get the doctors over to the mansion to take care of her.’’

’’Also..."

’’Hmm?"

"Young Miss is back...’’

The man paused for a moment before he proceeded to walk towards the door, ’’Get the driver over.’’

’’Where are you headed?"

’’To the Chen Manor.’’

...

For the whole day, Diana locked herself in her room.

The servants started panicking since she skipped the lunch. They tried knocking on the door to convince her to eat something but she was playing dead, without bothering to respond to them.

And on the other hand, the servants were terrified to tell Alice about it in fear of getting themselves punished. Their Young Miss clearly was starving herself as a form of retaliation against her mother. And they were afraid of getting themselves implicated in mother-daughter war.

But contrary to what they believed, Diana was not doing any sort of hunger strike.

The moment she stepped inside her room, her mind was badgered by different kind of thoughts.

Initially, she had wanted to climb down the windows and run away again but at the end of the day, it was illogical for her to do that.

She had wanted to come back anyway to have conversation with her parents before she officially left the place. If her mother was too difficult to talk to, she decided to try talking to her father.

The last thing she wanted was a horde of men investigating her whereabouts after she ran away again.

Once that resolution came to her mind, she relaxed for a few minutes before another worry formed in her head. Daisy and Maxim.

Both of them must be worried sick about her.

She was so shaken by the news of her mother being hospitalised that she did not even stop to tell them about it.

Informing Daisy meant dragging Angel into all that, not knowing if her parent’s perception had changed or not.

And Maxim... what would he think?

With all those thoughts overwhelming her head, and staying inside the closed walls, Diana ended up taking her old laptop out.

And for the first time in years, she started writing the story that she had in her head.

She became so engrossed in it that she ended up skipping lunch and ignoring the servants.

It was only around evening that Diana left to take a shower. By the time she had walked out and changed in a fresh set of clothes, there was a knock on the door.

Diana turned off the blowdryer as she glanced in the direction of the door, ’’I will eat when I feel like it. Stop bothering me.’’

"Starving yourself is not the way to go about it.’’

The voice had Diana’s hand halting for a moment before she placed the hairdryer down and walked towards the door.

’Click’

As the door opened, she was met with the sight of her father standing there with a helpless look on his face.

Diana paused.

She never remembered seeing him wearing a look like that. She had always seen him as a person with no vulnerabilities.

But there were rare instances from her childhood where she remembered her father losing control over his emotions.

Times when he fought with her mother especially. He would become a completely different person, harsh and uncomposed, totally unlike the facade he kept usually.

’’How have you been, Princess?"

Those softer words seemed to be encasing Diana’s heart in a little bit of warmth. Had it been her younger self, she would have burst in tears at those gentle words.

But Diana no longer knew what her parents were. She did not know who they were anymore, ’’What do you want, Dad?"

The wariness in her voice had Helian Chen freeze. He smiled wryly.

Guilt struck at Diana’s chest when she saw that look on his face.

Her father still looked powerful and handsome just as he had been. But for some reason, the lines around his eyes were a little bit evident and his aura seemed to be radiating exhaustion.

’’Are you... fine?"

Helian Chen nodded, sighing softly as he looked at Diana, ’’Come, let’s have a talk.’’

Diana looked at him for a moment. Knowing that it was inevitable, she followed him without any protests.

Once they were inside the Master Bedroom, she was greeted by the sight of a round table in the middle of the room. A lavish meal was spread on the table.

’’Since you skipped lunch, let’s have dinner together.’’

Diana looked at the man in surprise. She was expecting him to start questioning her. Or even reprimanding her.

When was the last time she ate with her father? Maybe at some event. She had no recollection of it.

Did she ever eat alone with him while they had a conversation? Never.

As the butler placed the wine bucket and turned to leave, Helian Chen motioned for him to close the door. "What are you looking so shocked for?" he asked Diana in an amused voice.

Diana gulped the lump in her throat, ’’These are all my favorite dishes.’’

’’Of course, why else do you think they made to this table?" Helian Chen poured wine in her glass before getting a glass for himself.

’’You prepared this?" Diana’s lips parted.

When he looked at her with a ’what do you think’ face, Diana blinked, ’’I... How do you know what I like?"

’’What do you mean how do I know about it?" the man looked at her like he heard something ridiculous, ’’You are my daughter. How can I not know your preferences?"

’’But..’’

’’Moreover, although you look more like your mother, your preferences align with mine. While your sister looks like me and her preferences match with your mother’s since she was young. What an irony,’’ Helian Chen shook his head.

Diana felt like she was in some dream.

Her father never did small talks.
