Crashing into an Old Flame
Chapter 277: Idiot!

Chapter 277: Idiot!

He led her to the wine cellar but once she saw the collection of wine, Diana scrunched her nose, ’’Ryle’s taste is worse than his actions. I have something great at my place. Let me get it from you,’’ Diana rushed away without giving Maxim a chance to respond.

Maxim crossed his arms in front of his chest and leaned back on the wall, chuckling. She could have cut to the chase and said that she wouldn’t accept these because Ryle pissed her sister off but she just had to talk in circles to state her point through her actions.

Good for her that he was not bad at reading her.

Maxim went to the Master bedroom and cleaned the coffee table before arranging the wine glasses and ice bucket.

Almost half an hour passed by the time Maxim had freshened up and gotten changed, and Diana had yet to come back.

A small frown touched his brows.

He picked up his phone from the couch but just as he was about to dial her number, the soft sound of approaching footsteps stole his attention.

He tilted his head to the side and glanced at the woman hesitantly standing near the doorframe. There was a touch of hesitation on her face as if she was contemplating something.

His gaze shifted from her face when he noticed her hands. In one hand, she was holding a bottle of wine and in the other hand, there was a discreet black box.

’’Took you long enough to get the wine?"

’’I got something else too,’’ Diana cleared her throat, eyeing the box in her hand.

Maxim chuckled, ’’I can see that. What is it?"

’’A gift,’’ she strode towards him, shoving the box gently in his hand before placing the bottle of wine on the coffee table, ’’Initially, I did not know what to gift you because I don’t have experience in gifting stuff to men, you know...’’

Maxim nodded, mumbling under his breath, ’’Good for you.’’

’’Hmm? Did you say something?’’ As Maxim shook his head, Diana continued, ’’It’s easy to prepare gifts for women.’’

’’You complicate things, Ana. Just wrap yourself up and stand in front of me,’’ Maxim casually said while flipping the black box in his hand, ’’Best. fucking. gift. ever.’’

"_"

’’Y-You...’’

Diana was rendered speechless by his antics.

Maxim glanced at the box in his before he turned it around to open it. But just as he was about to press the button in front of it, Diana grabbed his hand.

Maxim glanced at her.

’’Not now,’’ When he raised a brow questioningly, she cleared her throat, ’’Check it in my absence. Not now.’’

Maxim chuckled before he walked towards his bed and placed it carefully on the bedside table.

’’Then, what are we supposed to do now? In your presence?" his gaze dropped to her lips.

Breathing was suddenly a tough task or that’s what she felt, ’’Drink wine?" she pointed her hand towards the bottle of wine that she got from her place.

Maxim held her hand and led her to the couch.

As they sat, he grabbed the wine glass and poured the wine for her, ’’There you go.’’

’’Not drinking?" Diana took the glass from his hand and asked when he crossed a leg above the other and supported his head with his fingers, striking a pose that screamed ’I am ready to watch you’.

’’No.’’

’’Why not? We are at home,’’ Diana sipped her wine, relaxing back on the couch and clearly not noticing the shift of his expression.

’Home.’

’Not your home. But home.’

Maxim’s lips quirked up.

’’Because I don’t want to forget anything,’’ he said, tracing his gaze over her side profile as she drank the wine and looked out of the window, a few tresses of her blonde hair caressing her cheek, ’’Ana.’’

’’Hmm?"

’’You said you want to go back to Beijing. When do you want to?" At his question, she stiffened and slid her gaze to his.

There was an obvious wariness and surprise in her eyes as if she did not see it coming and she was unsure of how this discussion would go.

Even Maxim did not expect himself to ask it out of nowhere.

But with her, everything was unexpected.

’’Soon,’’ Diana lowered her gaze to the glass of wine in her hand, ’’I want to go there and visit the mansion to see my parents soon.’’

Maxim did not say anything but that did not stop those pessimistic shadows from lurking inside him, hands reaching out to hold his heart and suffocate it.

What after that? Stay there? Come back to me?

He wanted to ask but he knew that if she made a decision, he would not force her to change it.

’’I came here under unusual circumstances but things are better now. I wonder if they have stopped looking for me,’’ It would not have taken her father so long to find her otherwise, ’’But I just want to go there and officially move out this time. So, after that...’’ Diana tucked her hair behind her ear, ’’I can come back to yo... US, I mean.’’

Maxim sat there frozen as if trying to decipher the meaning behind her words, ’’Come back?"

Diana nodded, ’’That’s why I wanted to tell you about the conversations we were never able to have.’’

Maxim leaned back on the couch, a hand covering half of his face.

He knew that if she decided to stay there, then he would respect her decision regardless of how bothered he was.

No way in hell would he have imposed his choices on her.

But a part of him knew that if she made such a choice, then he might alter all his life choices for her.

The sudden ringing of a phone broke the silence in the Master Bedroom.

Diana glanced at Maxim as he slowly recovered from his daze, gradually coming back to reality. He picked up his phone and answered the call, his expression still looked a little sluggish even though she was the one who had been drinking.

She suppressed the smile on her face, putting the wine glass closer to her mouth.

’’What?" The shift in his tone had her attention on him once again.

And the expression on his face told her that something was not right.

Diana placed the wine glass on the coffee table and inched closer to him, placing her hand gently above his when he frowned.

"I will be... there. Stay with her.’’

The slight pause in Maxim’s words had Diana’s heart drop as an ominous feeling rose inside her.

The moment he hung up the call, she could not keep quiet anymore, ’’Is everything fine?" she stroked his palm.

’’It was Logan,’’ Maxim whispered, his gaze shifting to the small palm covering his large one trying to comfort it. He held her hand and kissed it, ’’Something is wrong with Mom. Not physically. But I am not sure. She has been disturbed by something lately. I need to be there...’’

Diana frowned, waiting patiently knowing that he had something more to say when she saw his hesitation.

’’I told you that I will stay with you but I have to go now so...’’ Maxim sighed, kissed her hand once more before he stood up, ’’You can sleep here while I am gone or you should head back to your place to take a rest,’’ he added after thinking that she might not like staying alone.

Diana scoffed, ’’Are you done?" she pushed herself to her feet and let go of his hand as she tied her hair in a messy bun, ’’Do you want me to drive?"

Maxim blinked, bewildered by her response.

’’Stop looking at me like that. I did not say something so hard to understand, did I?" Diana scrunched her nose, ’’Do you think you are in the right mindset to drive or would you like me to drive us there?"

’’What do you mean?"

’’I mean I am coming with you to visit Hazel. Before you go on about how I should take a rest and everything, that’s not the discussion we should be having now. For one, I tried to contact her earlier to invite her over for dinner but she said she won’t be able to make it. Logan was busy as well. And secondly, she sounded stressed so I intended to visit her tomorrow,’’ Diana said while fixing the collar of his T-shirt.

She grabbed a jacket for him from his wardrobe and got one for herself from the collection of outfits that he had kept for her, ’’So, back to the question, do you want me to drive?’’

Maxim shook his head, and touched the tip of his nose, ’’You had wine.’’

’’Such a rulebook. I just had a sip. If you don’t feel okay then I can drive.’’

He met her gaze and shook his head once, ’’You are coming with me. Makes me okay,’’ he walked past her, stepping out of the room almost with large strides.

While it took her a moment to recover.

Diana did not know if she was hallucinating it but she caught a glimpse of a faint redness on his face as he left.

Maxim Warner was blushing.

And she was loving every bit of it.

’’Idiot,’’ Diana scoffed but her lips inadvertently curved in a smile as she followed after him, "Wait for me!"

"Mm."
