Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 271: Where is she?
Chapter 271: Where is she?
When he moved from his previous place and got a job, all her memories stayed behind.
He got rid of their pictures and almost every other thing that reminded him of her. His brain assured him that she would leave his mind if he did that. That his obsession with her would disintegrate along with their memories.
Yet, no matter how he tried or what he did, he could not get rid of this particular picture. In the end, he flipped it around and fixed it in the photo frame such that he could not see her face. But keeping it on his desk never failed to be the constant reminder of what they once were.
’’Look at you! You are idling at the workplace," the voice brought Maxim out of his reverie.
Maxim placed the photo frame on his desk and glanced at the newcomer.
’’What was that?" Alex eyed the back of the photo frame.
He remembered that the last time he was there, he had broken this photo frame to spite Maxim, and much to his surprise, Maxim had gotten involved in a fight with him.
’’None of your business,’’ Maxim’s brows tugged together when his gaze landed on Alex’s bloodied shirt.
Alex followed his gaze, ’’Coincidentally, I went to Vegas to chill a bit. Guess who I bumped into there? Guess?!"
"Not interested," Maxim folded his sleeves and prepared to leave.
"Boring," Alex scoffed, "I bumped into that devil’s spawn who caused our misery. Dr. Rick was similarly chilling in a nightclub. And the rest is history,’’ Alex explained with a shrug before proceeding to take out a cigarette from his pocket.
’’Oh.’’
’’Oh? Just oh? You can’t even imagine how violent he was when I confronted him. He grabbed a broken bottle to harm me and he cursed your ancestors too. Man, he was delusional. He thought we want to ruin his career. Fortunately, I had called the authorities over so this blood doesn’t belong to me. He injured himself in an attempt to escape. I will ask Grandpa to send his lawyers over. With the proofs of this incident in hand, his license will be gone, at the very least."
Maxim nodded and walked out of his office, followed by Alex.
’’You don’t have any response,’’ Alex clicked his tongue.
Maxim halted in his tracks. He looked at Alex seriously, ’’Do you want me to praise you?"
Alex choked on his breath ’’Do you think you are my grandpa?"
’’I am not,’’ Maxim tucked a hand in his pocket, ’’But your grandpa is back. You can go to him and ask for praises.’’
Once he finished speaking, he turned around and continued walking.
Alex grumbled under his breath, wanting to curse the man for acting like a god all the time.
Maxim’s footsteps halted near Diana’s desk. The sight of the empty space greeted his eyes.
He was so occupied with his work that he did not get the chance to see her in the past few hours after they parted near the elevator.
Maxim’s gaze scanned across the clean and empty desk. There were none of her stuff, no colorful highlighters or no glitter pens, and none of the sticky notes that she usually stocked up.
Only a black file was sitting there.
He picked the file up and flipped the pages, only to recognize them as Louis’ discharge papers. Countless thoughts ran through his mind.
’’Hmm? Your assistant left without taking your permission?" Alex joined in with a nosy expression, ’’Tsk. You don’t know how to control these people.’’
Maxim slammed the file shut and placed it on the desk. He turned to the man, ’’Stop. following. me.’’
’’Which celebrity are you? What makes you think that I am following you?" Alex rolled his eyes and hoisted his chin up, ’’You don’t own this hospital, my grandpa does. I can go and do where and what I want to.’’
Maxim pinched the spot between his brows before he pulled his phone out to call Diana.
But his call went to voicemail within an instant.
’Hi, this is Diana. I’m either at work or reading a book. Leave a message and I promise to get back to you asap~’
Maxim tried a few more times but his calls kept going to voicemail.
He brought his phone closer to his mouth and recorded a voice message.
’’Ana, have you left? Is everything alright? Do you need my help?" Despite having a lot more words to say and many questions to ask, he kept it short before sending it to her.
Alex quirked a brow when he noted ’that’ tone in Maxim’s voice, "Workplace relationships are forbidden here. Taking my grandfather into consideration, I suggest you break up.’’
Maxim looked at him.
Alex cleared his throat, ’’Or you can consider quitting this job and shifting somewhere else...’’
’’Mary,’’ When Maxim spotted Mary near the other end of the hallway, he immediately made his way towards her, promptly ignoring Alex who tagged along like a leech.
’’Dr. Warner, Dr. Qin,’’ Mary was surprised to see them together but she quickly hid her surprise and greeted them politely, ’’Is there anything I can help you with?" she glanced at Maxim.
’’Diana.’’
"_" Help with Diana?
Alex was equally speechless as Mary. Both of them glanced at Maxim.
Maxim toned down his frustration as he clarified, ’’Do you know where she is? Did she leave early?" he had no reason to worry so much except for the fact that they always came to work together and left together, especially after moving to the same apartment. Unless she had an emergency, she would not leave like this without informing him.
But if he had to look for her, he wanted to make sure where she was first. He had no time to waste if it was indeed an emergency.
’’She...’’ Mary’s expression turned weird when she heard the question, ’’Dr. Warner, don’t you know about it?"
’’Don’t know about... what?"
