Chapter 225: Unethical Maxim

The nurse was bewildered, ’’Vera, it’s the patient that you handed to Dr. Rick. Don’t you remember that man? He is called Louis.’’

Veronica’s steps faltered.

Alex’s eyes narrowed as he looked at her.

And she barely mustered her strength to mutter, ’’You refused to treat him back then so I had him sent over to someone else...’’

Alex could vaguely remember when Veronica got over a patient whom Maxim did not treat. And back then he was pissed with Maxim, so he turned down the patient in the spur of the moment.

Later, he did not even have the leisure to think about the matter and it was soon pushed out of his head.

How did it escalate to this?

"How is his condition?" Alex turned to look at the nurse who was panicking.

’’Not good. His vitals are dropping. The rest of the team is working on stabilizing his condition after Dr. Rick left,’’ The nurse shook her head.

If not for the anasthesist who strictly refused to give up on a patient’s life just like that, some of them would have worked according to Dr. Rick’s orders and went along with it.

Alex nodded, ’’Get some other doctor over to assist me.’’

’’But...’’ The nurse was speechless. Knowing Dr. Alex’s temper, she had thought that there was a high chance that he would not pay attention to these things so she had already checked for the other doctors to take over this situation. There were barely any neurosurgeons available at this hour. And many of them weren’t at the hospital yet, including Dr. Warner.

Noticing the conflicted look on her face, Veronica inhaled a deep breath and spoke up, ’’I will try to get in touch with Dr. Warner.’’

Alex looked at her but he did not say a word of protest so Veronica took it as a sign of consent. It was after all not a time for their differences.

No matter how capable Alex was, he would not be able to effortlessly treat a patient alone under such circumstances. If Maxim was here, it would lessen his burden.

After they left, Veronica was left standing there with a pale face as she took out her work phone and called Maxim, only to have the call go to voicemail again and again.

Veronica’s face was paler than a sheet as she stumbled a few steps back.

What the hell did she end up doing?!

When Maxim opened his eyes, his gaze drifted to the clock on the wall and his eyes widened slightly when he saw that their supposed nap extended by almost thirty minutes.

It should be the first time in his life that he was taking a nap early in the morning and to top it off, he almost overslept.

Before he could get over this bizarre experience, the woman in his arms moved.

Diana shifted away from him as she tugged the pillow closer to her head.

Maxim’s eyes glimmered and he slowly moved closer to her. As her back brushed against his body, he placed an arm on her stomach, his palm slowly gliding under the thin layer of clothes she had donned.

And the warmth of her skin against his palm made his breathing turn uneven.

’’Mm...’’ she mumbled something incomprehensible.

But that noise she made at the back of her throat sounded like a moan to his ears. The moans he had grown familiar with.

Feeling like he was playing with fire, Maxim began to retract his hand from her clothes. But before he could do that, she shifted her body closer to him and her bottom grazed against his lower body.

Maxim’s body turned stiff and the urge to hold her into himself tightly drove him crazy as he slowly removed her clothes, his fingers twirling above the smooth expanse of her skin as they stroked her.

He leaned closer to her and pressed his chin on the crook of her neck. His tongue darted out to lick her earlobe.

She moaned unconsciously and leaned back in his arms, making his palm shift unconsciously as he felt a sudden softness against it.

’’Ana...’’ Maxim whispered in her ear, ’’This is unfair. So very immoral of you to do this to me,’’ his slender fingers wrapped around her breast just as the blanket shifted.

A gust of cold wind hit her body and Diana was startled awake. She blinked slowly as her groggy eyes registered the surroundings. The somewhat grayish wall was no longer that unfamiliar to her. She rubbed her eye dazedly, ’’Maxim?’’ her voice was sluggish.

Hearing no response, she turned around and looked at Maxim who was looking back at her with a straight face.

There was a good few inches of distance between them.

Diana did not find anything strange with it but she suddenly sat up on the bed, ’’God, did I oversleep? Are we late...’’ her words trailed off when the blanket slipped down her body and cold air caressed her skin.

When she lowered her head, her jaws dropped. She grabbed the blanket instinctively to hide her half-naked body.

’’Ana, do you want to sleep some more?" Before she could start interrogating him, Maxim had already sat up as he looked at her in concern, looking totally nothing like the culprit of her nakedness.

Diana looked at him with narrowed eyes, ’’So that you can join me? You are not going to work anymore?"

Maxim coughed, realizing that he was exposed.

’’You, Maxim Warner, are taking advantage of me when I am sleeping. Do you think that is ethical?" she tilted her head to the side, enjoying the rare flustered expression on his face.

’’I did not...’’ he tried to hold her hand but she tugged it back and clutched the blanket closer to her.

’’We are dating.’’

Diana froze, still a little unused to the shift in their relationship status. If she was told that the library incident was a dream, she would believe it in a breath. Having been blessed with a mind with a rich imagination, her dreams were full of fantasies so dating her best friend could very well be one of those dreams of hers.

But... uh... they would not be sleeping on the same bed if that were the case.
