Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 209: Playing with fire
Chapter 209: Playing with fire
Mary did not notice Diana’s ever-changing expression because she was still reeling over how she spent the past two days. Moreover, despite the fight between the two doctors, what was more troublesome was that Dr. Warner was not as easy to get along with. Usually, the man handled most of his work by himself yet Mary used to arrange a few things for him.
Those duties were naturally shifted to Diana when she joined but the past two days when Diana was not at work, it seemed like stepping on bombs whenever Mary was around Maxim. The man seemed displeased with everything and everyone, even the hospital walls.
As Mary thought about it, she was suddenly reminded of something, ’’Diana, you... didn’t you tell us that you are a business graduate?" She was still not over the astonishment she felt when she discovered Diana’s educational background and the rest of the hospital staff who used to mock and badmouth Diana behind her back also were too stunned to say a word.
Diana obviously noticed how most of the hospital staff were treating her like a plague.
’’Oh... I...’’ Diana rubbed her neck, ’’Long story. But I did both,’’ It was just that she was framed by her mother and had to leave medical school due to the circumstances. As for business, she ended it half-heartedly.
Mary felt like Diana was being too humble and did not badger her about it.
Suddenly, Mary’s eyes widened, ’’Why... Why is Dr. Qin staring at you?"
Alex?
Diana was surprised. She turned her head to the side and noticed the man standing near the end of the hallway.
When she came to the hospital today, she had already crossed paths with Alex at the entrance. And he stared at her just like this but she did not pay much attention to it.
Now that she thought about it...
Diana’s eyes darkened, ’’Mary, I saw him lingering around me some time ago as well.’’
’’Really?" Mary’s eyes widened, ’’What did you do?"
’’I defended Maxim in front of him,’’ Diana blinked, ’’Do you think he is holding a grudge over that?"
Mary shook her head as she dragged Diana to the corner where Alex could not see them anymore, ’’You are done! Is that why he is keeping an eye on you? Is he looking for an opportunity to frame you?"
Diana’s face turned cold. The more she listened to Mary’s assumption, the further it made sense, ’’Let him try then,’’ she narrowed her eyes.
She was a guest here. Meanwhile, it was his family’s hospital. It was yet to be seen who will lose more face if they were framed.
Looking at Diana’s cold expression, Mary felt like Diana would not be bullied but she still continued warning her.
Meanwhile, the person who was supposedly trying to frame Diana—
Alex was still feeling light-headed after the morning lesson with his grandpa. Initially, he wanted to apologize to Diana and get done with it so that she would not go around babbling in front of his old man.
But who could have thought that woman would come to the hospital with his sworn enemy? Alex would rather die than apologize to her in front of Maxim.
In the end, he kept an eye on her till that bastard was gone but now that he wanted to approach her, she was talking with Mary. The last time he interrupted their gossip time, this petty assistant lost her temper.
Since Alex was trying to apologize to her, he did not want to offend her further so he stayed put. Who could have thought she would look at him coldly and walk away?
Alex gulped and plastered himself to the wall.
Was this woman on her period? Even though he snapped at her, he was clearly drunk at that time and he even wanted to apologize to her. What did she mean by giving him that look?
Or...
A thoughtful look appeared on Alex’s partially swollen handsome face.
Or... Did that vixen, Maxim, badmouth him in front of her? That man lurked around his assistant all the time with obvious intentions to seduce her. It was not impossible for him to use this assistant to paint him badly in front of his grandfather.
Alex’s eyes darkened. It made sense no matter how he thought.
He was not afraid of an assistant and if she was not related to his grandfather, he would have kicked her out of the hospital the moment she got on his nerves. Yet, this assistant clearly had some affiliations with his old man.
And that put Alex in an awkward spot.
In the end, he still kept his apology inside his stomach and left when he thought about Diana’s cold gaze. It was not a good idea to provoke a woman on her period or under the influence of a vixen.
Diana had no idea about what Alex thought. She simply assumed that he was way too cowardly of a man who could not accept being beaten up by Maxim and he wanted to vent on her seeing that she was a ’harmless’ and ’delicate’ woman.
But she did not take it to heart. If worse came to worst, he would still have to ask for permission from his grandfather before he came at her.
When it was lunch break, Diana was still engrossed in sorting out the documents in her hand and wanted to ask someone to deliver the lunch to Maxim.
But then she remembered what happened when she had done it the last time. He had walked out and told her to do it by herself again.
Sighing helplessly, she took his meal from the hospital canteen and then walked towards his office.
After knocking twice on the door, she stepped inside.
Maxim was on a phone call so Diana quietly arranged the food on the coffee table and was about to leave when he reached his hand towards her.
She paused in her tracks before approaching him. As she placed her hand in his, his fingers wrapped around her palm and he pulled her to his lap, making her eyes widen.
’’Yes,’’ Maxim responded to whoever he was talking to while his fingers threaded inside her hair.
Diana was too stunned to react. When she walked to him, she had not expected him to pull her to his lap. So, his actions caught her off guard.
She tried to get up from his lap but he trapped her between the desk and his body.
Diana helplessly pointed her thumb towards the door. It was not even locked.
Although he was responding briefly, Maxim was still on the phone.
His fingers grabbed the back of her head as he leaned closer and captured her lips.
Her back pressed against the table as she gripped his arm.
Maxim deepened the kiss and kissed her harder till Diana was out of breath and her face was flushing red.
As their lips parted, he buried his face in her neck, ’’I see,’’ he responded to the person on the phone while planting a soft kiss on her neck.
Diana turned redder under his ministrations. He was obviously on a work call yet he did not seem to care.
But when she thought he would continue teasing her, Maxim released her. There was a playful glint in his eyes as he grabbed her hand and pressed a lingering kiss on the back of her palm.
Her heart thudded, wanting to bounce out of her ribcage.
Diana rubbed her chest as she left his office under his searing gaze.
’’Did I sign for this when I agreed to date him?" she continued rubbing her chest as she patted her warmed cheeks with her other hand.
She felt like she was playing with fire.
After a few moments, Diana calmed down and looked back at his office. She could have waited for him to finish his call but she had other things to do.
She started walking away as she dialed Daisy’s number but the call was automatically disconnected.
As she stepped inside the elevator, Diana called her again.
There was no response even after three calls.
While Diana was calling Daisy, the elevator door opened and Veronica stepped inside.
When the woman noticed her, she stiffened before moving behind her. From time to time, Diana could feel a burning gaze on her.
