Crashing into an Old Flame
Chapter 205: Questionable taste

Chapter 205: Questionable taste

Maxim brought Diana down from the table and grabbed her hand.

He almost started pulling her out of the bookstore until Diana stopped him.

"I have something to do,’’ she freed her hand from his grip,

He watched helplessly as she went to collect every book that he had left a clue in. While doing so, she turned to look at him, ’’You did not mention anything about this when we came here,’’ Diana raised the first book that led her to the first clue, ’’Had I not noticed this book, were you going to say anything?"

Maxim shook his head, ’’I would have taken it as my cue to wait longer.’’

He had placed his bets on whether she would notice the book or not. It was a risky thing to do and the outcomes in his head were not optimistic at all.

Diana’s response was a surprise and he could not ask for anything more.

But when he was preparing this, he had thought of every possible negative outcome. Hence, he had decided beforehand.

If she noticed the book and found the first clue by herself, he would bite the bullet and go for it. If she did not notice it, he would drag it for some time until he regained the confidence to ask her out again.

Luckily, she did notice it.

And luckily, he did not back off.

Diana smiled with a shake of her head as she grabbed every book that he had used.

After shoving the books into his arms, she turned and browsed through some bestsellers. Since she was here already, it was not good to miss out on this good stuff. Moreover, from the shop owner’s fawning attitude, Diana understood that Maxim had squandered quite some money here so she did not want it to be such a waste.

Unlike earlier when Maxim felt neglected by Diana because of the books, this time he was happy to oblige to her wishes. He leaned back on the table with the stack of books in his arms and watched as she went back and fro, browsing through books in different genres.

After fifteen minutes, Diana had placed two stacks of books on the table next to Maxim.

She still felt like the shop owner made a profit out of Maxim but she felt tired after running around the place to find books of her preference.

Feeling rather lazy, she did not want to continue anymore.

Instead, she turned Maxim as she panted softly, ’’Do you want some of these?"

Maxim glanced at her devotedly before shifting his gaze to the two books on the top of the stacks, ’’What are these about?" He was not really interested in fiction but her glowing eyes told him that she would love to talk about these so he asked.

As expected, Diana looked excited when she heard his question, ’’This one—’’ She pointed towards the book with a soft purple colored cover that was titled ’Redeemed’ as she spoke, "—is about a man who falls in love with the daughter of his father’s murderer and kills her whole family but is helpless against her. It’s dark romance,’’ she said the last words in a conspiratorial tone.

Maxim was speechless. He felt like her taste in books was rather questionable.

"This one—’’ she pointed towards the other book titled ’Fall again’, ’’—is about a girl whose boyfriend cheats on her and by series of twists, she ends up cohabiting with her ex-boyfriend’s hot dad and falls for him...’’

"_"

Maxim wanted to stop her from speaking any further yet when he saw the happiness on her face, he patiently listened while she went on and on describing how interesting that genre was, or how romantic this or that book was despite all kinds of twisted antics of the hero.

Once she was done describing, Diana looked at him, ’’Which one are you taking?"

Maxim cleared his throat, ’’How about this? I’d rather you read all these and tell me the story.’’

Diana nodded thoughtfully, ’’Yeah, you are busy. It’s better that way even though you won’t get the same feeling as you would have while reading the books.’’

Maxim wanted to disagree. Her reciting the content in that sweet voice of hers would give him the best feeling and he could easily get through the torture of going through these books if she was the one talking about them.

By the time they walked out of the store, the shop owner’s heart was bleeding as he eyed the huge bag in Maxim’s hand through the glass doors. The man was so generous and rich that he paid him the profits of the whole month for booking the bookstore for only one night yet the girl was stingy and calculative enough to not even pay for all those books. Those were his precious bestsellers babies that had arrived yesterday.

But even if his heart was in pain, he knew that the girl was right in doing so and he did not exactly suffer a loss because of those few books so he could only wipe his tears silently.

While the store owner was drowning in tears of self-pity, what he did not was that after this day, what awaited his small store was a bright future in the months to come.

...

As soon as Diana entered the car, her gaze landed on the box of pastries. Earlier, she was too curious about where Maxim was taking her so she ended up abandoning her pastries which were in a melted mess now.

She picked up the spoon and started eating it, relishing the taste of chocolate. She was so busy relishing it that she did not realize when her small bites turned into huge ones till her mouth was full and her cheeks were slightly bulging.

That was the scene that greeted Maxim’s eyes when he entered the car after placing the books in the car trunk.

Helpless, he grabbed her wrist, "You don’t have to eat that. We can get some new ones on our way back."

Once her mouth was free, she spoke up.

"What do you know? It’s tastier this way," she pulled her hand out of his grip and turned the spoon towards him, "Try?"

Maxim grabbed the spoon from her hand.
