Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 140: Coward. Coward. Coward—
Chapter 140: Coward. Coward. Coward—
’’Forget it,’’ he interrupted her, much to her chagrin, ’’What if I do it?"
’’Huh?" Diana looked at him, confused.
’’What if I call you a coward? Do I get kissed every time I do it?"
The air turned dense and something inside her thrummed when he stepped closer to her.
She had just started to shake her head but somehow, the shake turned into a small nod.
’’Coward,’’ Maxim chastised but he might as well be reading her a smut book in that deep tone that tickled her body, ’’Coward. Coward. Coward—’’
His words were cut off when she pushed herself to her feet and pressed her lips against his.
Maxim pulled back from her almost instantly.
Her eyes were filled with confusion until Maxim wrapped an arm around her waist and hoisted her up in his arms.
Her legs wrapped around his waist as he slammed his lips against hers.
His grip on her waist tightened and she gasped. His tongue slid inside her mouth without restraints.
Maxim fisted her hair with his other hand as he angled her head for better access to her mouth.
By the time their lips parted, she was in a panting mess just like the last time.
His eyes glazed with unbridled lust as he kissed her chin, trailing wet kisses down to her neck.
’’Ah...’’ Diana’s eyes opened slightly when he sucked the spot he just kissed and the first thing that greeted her vision was a sleeping Angel.
Her eyes widened, ’’Stop!" she whisper yelled.
His lips lingered on her neck for another moment before he placed a soft kiss there and pulled back to look at her. He was not panting like her but his eyes seemed hazy and confused.
’’We... I... Angel is here. Oh my god,’’ Diana buried her face in the crook of his neck.
Truly, she was not an example of a mother figure. How could she act so indecently in front of her baby? What was worse was that she had even forgotten about Angel’s existence while clinging to her best friend for her dear life.
’’Calm down,’’ Maxim strode towards the bed with large footsteps and threw a bolster on the spot where he was sitting earlier.
In a few seconds, Angel had two pillow walls on either side of her body.
Diana speechlessly glanced at the King-size bed, unable to register it when he started walking towards the opposite wall.
He stopped near a door and pushed it open and Diana’s lips parted as she took in the sight of a huge study.
’’Umm... You can put me down now,’’ she whispered.
Maxim’s grip on her hips tightened.
She stiffened in his arms when he stepped inside the study.
’’What happened?" He asked when he sensed her discomfort.
She shook her head.
’’Tell me.’’
’’I was scolded a few times in the study when I was young so I don’t have a fondness for these places.’’ What she did not tell him was that the scolding was not a parental scolding that kids receive.
He frowned a bit before he said, ’’I did not bring you here to scold you though.’’
’’Then why did you bring me here?" she asked when he placed her on the mahogany desk.
"You know why,’’ Maxim said.
Diana blinked at him, ’’Or maybe I don’t.’’
One of his hands reached towards her face as his fingers twirled a strand of her hair, ’’Because we didn’t want to be a bad influence on Angel?" he raised a brow.
’’Oh...’’
Maxim looked at her adorable face. He could sense that she had a heap of words that she wanted to spout.
And honestly, he did not mind if she started blabbering as usual. Her voice was a kind of music to his soul. Anything she talked about... even if that was history, she could make it interesting for him. He loved when she talked a lot because it was only him she was so talkative with.
But right at that moment, the only thoughts that ran through his head were to seal that mouth of hers, to make her gasp as she did earlier, to leave her blushing and breathless.
Back in the past, whenever he looked at her lips, he would have thoughts of kissing them.
He knew that he felt that way probably because he knew she was off limits.
The more someone can’t have something, the more they would try to have it.
She was his best friend. She was the only person he had cared for after his mother.
And she was the object of his darkest desires. The kind of thoughts he grew for her was always supposed to be a secret and he had bottled them inside, never letting a single emotion spill.
But then, she crashed into his life again after 6 years.
And much to his surprise, the way he felt about her never changed at all. That pretty little mouth still made him fantasize about it.
He thought he was having such thoughts because he knew he could not have her. They were friends. He assumed that once he kissed her, his thoughts would stop.
With that calculation, the wild ideas in his head should have halted after they kissed yesterday.
He would not have dreamt of repetition the whole night after she rushed out of his office.
He would not have provoked her today. He would not have been secretly cheerful when she kissed him just to prove that she was not a coward.
And he certainly would not have initiated the kiss when she tried to play it off as casual after kissing him.
It irked him when she stood there calmly like she could grab any man by his collar and capture his lips and it would not be a bother to her at all.
It frustrated him to know that she was all so calm and composed about it, not knowing about the kind of torture she was inflicting on him.
Maxim raked his fingers inside her hair, letting the tips of his fingers graze her scalp.
Her lips parted slightly and he saw the way her eyes widened when he grabbed the back of her neck.
Just as Maxim was about to kiss her again, Diana moved on instincts and slapped her palm on his mouth, ’’No, wait...’’
Maxim’s brows tugged together.
When she removed her palm, he said, ’’The walls aren’t soundproofed. I left the door open. The moment Angel wakes up, we will know. I made the pillow barrier so she won’t fall...’’
’’It’s not about Angel,’’ Diana interrupted as she looked over his shoulder and glanced at the little girl who was sleeping peacefully. She had not slept the whole evening so Diana doubted that Angel would open her eyes before dawn, ’’I mean, I have a clear view of her. So, it’s not about her.’’
’’What is it about then?" Maxim frowned when he heard her explanation.
Diana hesitated for a moment before she traced her finger on his skin, smoothening the lines between his brows.
Maxim froze when he felt her gentle touch. Must she torture him like this?
’’We are friends,’’ she blurted.
A vein throbbed on his forehead, ’’None of what we did can be classified as friendly things. Did I not tell you that what I think about you goes beyond the morals of friendship?"
Diana’s lips parted. She had not gotten over the words he had said to her. ’’Yes, so...’’
’’If you are going to spout some parting words before we go back into an indefinitely long awkward phase of ignoring each other, then hold it in,’’ he warned.
’’No, it’s not...’’ her words were interrupted again when his phone started ringing.
At this hour? Diana blinked, ’’I will go out first,’’ she was about to get off the desk when he tapped her thigh twice.
’’Sit still,’’ Maxim took out his phone from his pockets and it was only then Diana noticed that he was still dressed in the black shirt and grey trousers that he was wearing earlier this day.
Just like her, he was drenched in the rain too. It was surprising that he did not get changed considering he must have his clothes here.
Was it because she slept in the same clothes? Was he keeping her company like this?
Diana felt a bit silly for thinking that way but it was feasible if the person in question was Maxim.
He did such things, hiding it well from her. Silly but adorable.
’Oh, but there was nothing adorable about the way he sucked you earlier,’ a voice in her head mocked.
Diana touched her lips in a daze, her face heating up.
Right at that moment, a phone came into her view.
She glanced at Maxim questioningly.
’’It’s Ivy,’’ he said.
Her eyes widened, ’’I must have left my phone downstairs,’’ she mumbled.
She quickly grabbed his phone and as soon as she pressed it to her ear, Ivy’s worried voice rang from the other side, ’’Dee, I just came back. Why are you guys not around? Why was sir so awfully quiet when I asked him about you? Oh my god, I am so worried. I was stuck with my date because of the storm. Don’t get me started about how bad it was... Hell, I came back and I did not see you or Angel around. My soul is still loitering outside my body. Hello. Hello? Dee. You there?’’
Diana was unable to control her laughter when she heard her words.
