Chapter 138: Good at everything
Chapter 138: Good at everything
’’Did she waver?" Looking at how sweet and warm Hazel is, one could never tell that she had suffered so much.
Moreover, raising a child alone is not a trifle. Diana thought as she glanced at Angel. If she had not met Maxim and the people around him who have always been supportive, then she would have had it worse.
’’Did Hazel ever think about giving you up?" Diana questioned.
’’Never,’’ Maxim answered, and his voice was not one bit doubtful. He sounded like his usual confident self, ’’On my birthdays, she would drink a lot and blabber about how blessed she is to have me, about how much she loved me the moment she discovered my existence. Although we don’t look like that, we do get along at some rare times,’’ Maxim said.
Diana laughed. The bond between Hazel and Maxim was so precious.
They did not have much but they still made such a happy and warm family while there are families who are just broken and hollow from the inside despite having everything.
Her smile died a bit.
She diverted her attention by asking him, ’’Did your grandfather support her decision of keeping you?"
Maxim stood up from the swing and picked Angel up in his arms when she rolled off the carpet before he went back to sit beside her.
’’He was the only person who did,’’ Maxim said.
Diana stiffened, ’’Was...’’
’’He passed away...’’ there was a brief tightness to his tone when he said that and she placed her hand on his, stroking his fingers gently, ’’And then we moved to Los Angeles after I got the scholarship. Then I met you,’’ he continued calmly.
Diana sighed, not pursuing that topic anymore, ’’Yes, then you met me.’’
Her heart ached so terribly that she moved without thinking twice.
She cupped his face and pressed a soft kiss on his forehead, ’’And I am glad that you met me.’’
The air turned into something else.
And her palms resting on his face suddenly felt warm when his gaze smoldered her.
He leaned closer to her.
Diana’s heart raced and her eyes fluttered close when his lips were barely inches away from hers.
’’Mama...’’
Her eyes snapped open.
The trance broke.
Realizing what they had almost done, Diana pulled away from him.
’’Mama...’’
The simple word got both of their attention.
Her eyes shifted to Angel who was sucking her thumb and looking at her, ’’Oh my god, you said it right this time,’’ her eyes widened in excitement, ’’Say that again, baby?’’ Diana grabbed her little fingers, ’’Say ma-ma.’’
Both Maxim and Diana looked at Angel expectantly.
’’Mababma...’’
"_"
Before Diana could sulk at the lost ’Mama’, something wet touched her neck.
She touched her skin before looking up at the dark sky and soon, more raindrops fell as it started pouring.
Maxim and Diana looked at each other, ’’On the count of 3,’’ she said.
’’One... two...’’ And the moment she said three, both of them rushed inside the house with Maxim shielding Angel in his arms.
’’Are you fine?" he asked as soon as they got inside.
Diana nodded, squeezing water from her dress.
She turned around as the water droplets crashed against the tall glass walls around the terrace.
After they went to the living room, Maxim left to make a phone call after asking her if she needed help.
Diana fed Angel and changed her clothes, her mind running through the conversation she had with Maxim on the terrace.
She had always known that Hazel was a single mother but she assumed that either her husband was dead or she was divorced. She never asked Maxim about it in the fear of hurting him.
But the odd expression on Old Master Qin’s face when he mentioned his family piqued her curiosity. It was a wild guess but she wondered if he was somehow related to Maxim.
Yet, the actual story turned out to be different.
By the time Diana was done with Angel, the rain had turned more violent, accompanied by thunder.
’’Wahhh...’’ Angel started bawling.
Diana wrapped the baby cape around Angel and pressed her head on her shoulder as she walked around the living room, rocking the little girl, ’’Baby, you need to sleep right now...’’ she patted her back.
The girl cried harder.
Diana’s shoulder started turning numb and she shifted Angel to the other side before she turned on the television, ’’You want to watch a cartoon?" she tried to cajole the little girl.
But Angel seemed to have no intention to stop crying.
Angel’s tears soaked Diana’s already-drenched clothes.
Diana sneezed.
She sat on the couch, feeling distressed as she looked at the wailing Angel.
’’What happened?"
Diana raised her head to look at Maxim who seemed to have hurried over to them, ’’She keeps crying...’’ she sneezed twice and looked at him, ’’I feel like I will join her too,’’ her eyes welled up.
She had been rocking the girl for the past hour yet she could not calm her.
’’Come on, don’t cry,’’ Maxim tapped her head and took Angel from her arms.
Diana plopped on the couch like jelly.
She rubbed her eyes as she watched Maxim quietly rocking Angel.
The little girl who was not coaxed by her cajoling somehow turned quiet by his calm demeanor the moment she was in his arms.
Diana yawned, a hint of relief across her face, ’’How do you do that, Warner?"
’’Do what?" Maxim averted his gaze from Angel to look at her.
’’How are you so good at everything?" Diana whispered.
Maxim blinked, ’’You mean this?" he raised Angel towards her. And as she nodded, he shrugged a shoulder, ’’Probably because I am not a motherly figure like you.’’
She glared.
He chuckled, ’’We end up stressing over things that are important to us. Rather than being anxious about why she is not sleeping and how to make her sleep, I choose to go with the flow and make her comfortable.’’
’’So here we are...’’ Diana mumbled as she glanced at the sleeping Angel before gazing at him.
Her eyes flickered under the dim lights as his words replayed in her mind, totally in a different context.
’We end up stressing over things that are important to us. Rather than being anxious about why she is not sleeping and how to make her sleep, I choose to go with the flow and make her comfortable.’
’We end up stressing over things that are important to us. Go with the flow.’
Overwhelmed by the thoughts running through her head, she did not realize when her eyelids started drooping.
"Get changed first."
’’I am so tired...’’ she mumbled as she closed her eyes.
