Crashing into an Old Flame
Chapter 106: I don’t joke when it comes to you

Chapter 106: I don’t joke when it comes to you

Diana remembered hitting her forehead on the floor as she fell on her face. The store room was dark and she had shouted for help but no one dared to help. She had screamed about being hungry, she was cold, she was scared as her head bled but she was just left there alone with what felt like a shattered wrist, aching in pain. There was not even a single window in that room...

She was alone and she gradually started losing consciousness....

’’Diana!"

Diana’s dazed eyes regained focus as she looked at Maxim, confused and lost, ’’Yes...?" her voice was hoarse and she realized that she felt something salty in her mouth, a wetness trailing down her cheeks.

Maxim’s expressions were beyond terrifying. His hair was in a mess as a result of being raked over again and again.

It has been 3 minutes. 3 whole minutes since he came here, witnessed this scene, and kept calling for her but she seemed to be in a trance. And he was scared...

To avoid shocking her, he did not touch her and kept standing at a distance and every passing second seemed to be the hit of a sledgehammer on his heart filling him with regret.

He should have known better than to let her work here.

Veronica’s face turned pale when she saw Maxim. She had been indignant about this woman who get this job which was meant to be hers. But now confusion filled her. This bloody assistant... was not just an assistant, was she?

As soon as Diana came out of her trance, Maxim just wanted to press her into his arms but his eyes caught the sight of her hand.

Maxim’s cold gaze shifted to the woman who was clutching Diana’s wrist, ’’Hands off,’’ his voice was covered in a layer of frost.

Other than indifference, Veronica had never seen this man sporting another expression on his face and something inside her stirred, her grip on Diana’s hand loosened. This fucking job was hers in the first place... It...

’’You didn’t hear me?" Maxim took a threatening step towards the woman.

Diana had gradually recovered her senses by now. She pulled her hand away swiftly and glanced at Maxim. His expressions sent alarm bells in her head, ’’I am fine,’’ she whispered in a barely audible voice.

But he was not looking at her. He was looking at that Veronica woman.

She whispered in a voice only they could hear, her tone was still a bit shaky, ’’If you keep looking at her like that, she might fall in love....’’ Her attempt to joke lodged back in her throat when he turned to glare at her.

Maxim’s expressions softened when he saw her pale face. He extended his hand towards her, ’’Come here.’’

Diana could feel everyone’s gaze on them but looking at his concerned face, she did not stop to care about what people will think or talk. She took a step towards him but her legs wobbled.

Maxim pulled her into his arms and held her up in a princess carry before he strode towards his office room without sparing a glance at anyone else.

Diana struggled a bit.

Maxim narrowed his eyes, ’’Stay still or I will throw you right here.’’

And he even sounded like he meant it. How ruthless.

Diana covered her face with her hands, despite knowing that it was of no use now.

Low-profile job?

Not revealing anything about knowing Maxim?

All of it was flushed straight into the drain.

They left, bickering and glaring at each other all the while as Maxim held her in his arms like a dragon protecting its treasure.

What they left behind was an extended period of silence behind them.

"D-Did you see that?"

’’Oww...Don’t pinch my waist. Pinch yourself if you can’t believe your eyes.’’

’’Was it really Dr. Warner?"

’’Who knows? The plastic surgeon in our hospital does his job pretty well. We can’t be sure about the possibility of that person being an impostor...’’

Although people phrased it that way but all of them were certain that it was indeed Maxim. The only reason they found it unbelievable was because despite his entanglements with multiple women, Maxim Warner was never seen holding hands with anyone, let alone carrying them.

As for the patients and other onlookers who did not recognize Maxim or understand the whole situation found it kind of sweet too with the general theme of ’Man stepping up to protect his woman’. After all, according to them, it was hard to find this kind of love now-a-days where people only acted according their convenience.

This public display of affection was shoved in their faces too suddenly. So much so that they could not gulp the dog food down, nor could they spit it out. They were left choking on it.

At this moment, one of the onlookers stepped forward from the crowd.

The sound of heels clicking against the floor broke the silence, attracting everyone’s attention.

And the person they saw was Nora Queens, Maxim’s brand new ex-girlfriend but also a very capable pediatrician in Artemis hospital. She was known to be a very sharp tongued woman and there were actually some female staff members who shipped this couple despite their obsession with Maxim.

Everyone could not help but expect chaos. Was she going to chase after the two people who left in such an intimate manner? The scene of a highly jealous ex?

But their thoughts halted when Nora stood in front of Veronica, ’’Which department are you in?"

Veronica was still in a daze but when she saw Nora, her face lit up. This ruthless woman would not like someone seducing her man... ’’I am Dr. Qin’s assistant.’’

’’They even hire such filth now,’’ Nora’s brows tugged together, ’’She can even report you for physical assault if she wants. I think the CCTV cameras and people around here are more than enough to be the evidence. Just in case these people don’t open their mouths, I’d willingly give my statement as an eye witness,’’ her tone was disdainful as she turned around and left.

Everyone: "_"

Veronica was taken aback. Why were all of them exaggerating it? She had just lost control and held that woman’s wrist earlier to stop her from leaving, but she did not hit her or anything.

What physical assault were they even talking about? People like her worked their asses off to make it to the top and then there were people like that bitch who relied on favors and landed themselves up there without an effort. That was not how it was supposed to work in the medical field.

...

’’I told you I am fine...’’ Diana whispered as Maxim kicked open the door to his office room.

Maxim walked towards the glass desk and discarded the files to the side as he placed her atop it. He cupped her face, examining her from head to toe, ’’Where?"

’’Huh? What where?" one butterfly fluttered inside her when he held her and it tickled the numbness inside her chest before the mass production of butterflies started as he stroked her face gently.

’’Where are you hurt?"

’’I am not...’’

Maxim cut her off, ’’Diana, you are fucking cold. Don’t make me repeat myself. Tell me where you are hurt.’’

The demons in her head were far more fatal than the demons in this world. Being hurt was not always about something external. She wanted to tell him.

In the end, she sighed helplessly, ’’I am not.... Fine, to be honest, I am hurt here...’’ she pressed her index finger on her chest, right where her heart was.

Her intention was to just purely joke around a bit to calm him down but her pure intentions crawled away when the man picked her up in his arms again, holding her head at an angle of perfect 45° this time.

Diana was flustered, ’’W-Where...’’

’’Stay still. Don’t talk. I am taking you to the cardiologist.’’

"_"

’’Warner... you wait!" Diana wrapped her arms around his neck, clinging to him in a desperate attempt to save herself from further embarrassement, ’’I am more than fine. Look at me, Maxim. Just stop walking and look at me. I can even do pushups right now if you get me a change of clothes....’’ When he did not stop walking, she swung her legs like a child and hurriedly added, ’’Infact, I can do it in this skirt too.... I will just wrap the coat tighter around myself so as to not flash at you accidentally!’’ her voice was urgent.

Maxim stopped in his tracks, ’’You...’’

’’I am fine. I am really fine. I am finer than the legendary Mona Lisa painting at this moment. No signs of issues,’’ she hurriedly said, ’’Don’t you get it?"

’’Get what?" he squinted.

’’I was just joking,’’ she laughed awkwardly when he took her back to the desk and placed her on it again, re-examining her.

’’I don’t joke,’’ he tilted his chin to look at her face, ’’Not when it comes to you.’’

’Thump’

His words rendered her speechless.

She looked at him for some time, a strange glint swirling in her eyes as she opened her mouth, ’’Max...’’

’Knock Knock’

Diana shut her mouth.

’’Come in,’’ Maxim did not stop examining her body for any signs of injuries.

Just as his attention trailed to her wrist, the door was pushed open, ’’I think you would prefer to step out for a moment instead.’’

Diana looked over when she heard that feminine voice.

Pretty ex-girlfriend. The words flashed in her mind as she blinked and pushed Maxim away from her before she jumped off the desk, ’’I have work to do. Thanks for your concern, Dr. Warner,’’ her tone was professional this time.

Maxim’s eyes narrowed dangerously. He placed a hand around her shoulder and he led her to the couch, ’’Sit here and stay put.’’

Diana frowned, ’’You both should talk here. I don’t want to be a third wheel between you and your girlfriend,’’ her voice was barely above a whisper.

Maxim calmly tucked her blond tresses behind her ear as if he did not mind the other presence behind them. He lowered his body, letting his mouth linger near her ear and she stiffened when his warm breath caressed her neck as he spoke, ’’What did I tell you about the differences between an ex-girlfriend and girlfriend, Ana?"

Diana’s internal organs all did a group backflip at his seductively hoarse tone. But that nickname...? She gulped.

Why had it never sounded so erotic before? She could not help but wonder as she watched him stepping out of the door.

His ex-girlfriend gave her an once over before she followed him too. The despising look on the woman’s face told Diana that she was once again chastising her fashion sense.

Diana glanced at her clothes speechlessly.
