Chapter 45: Persona created

The cream satin and silver lace and spangle wasn’t what she had in mind.

Neither was the silver heels, or the diamond necklace.

But it was by far, the most prettiest gown she had ever owned.

It fitted her snugly, without being revealing or obscene. It scooped up her waist, hugging her curves tightly.

Her hair was left in a cascade of black silk, a sharp contrast to her gown.

She glanced at herself in the mirror and her painted pink lips curved into a smile.

She grabbed the bag from the dressing table and headed out of her room. She already had a persona created for tonight.

Mysterious and intriguing, aloof yet not rude. That should do.

Another surprise that almost made her heart burst out of her ribcage was the twins, clasped in black tuxedos. With bow ties and their unruly hairs brushed and slicked back, her heart melted from how cute they looked.

The twins weren’t the only one present though. Ezekiel stood with them, his intense scrutiny of her, made her face heat up. And so did the slight nod of satisfaction.

Lu Chen whistled.

"You look absolutely stunning." He said, his eyes still on her.

"Thank you," Lin wei replied with a smile. It was always best to get into character before leaving.

That way, she’ll make sure she had everything perfected and there will be no slip ups.

The third figure wasn’t someone she had been expecting. James, clad in a dark suit and sunglasses, grinned down at her.

"Ready?" He asked, the twins holding each of his hands.

"Yes I am." Her voice sounded confident, even to her own ears.

"Alright mini devils!" Lu Chen bend down to face the twins, who stared at him rapidly. "You stay out of trouble this time around. No more calling an adult feeble minded and dumb," he glanced at Garry who shook his head indignantly.

Harry only grinned.

"I only said that once. And it was true."

"You said that to the mother of your friend," Lu Chen raised his brows and Garry shrugged.

"Alright, you guys are getting late."

Ezekiel prowled forward, his hands casually in his pockets. His icy blue eyes pierced into Lin wei’s and she fought the urge to lean in.

"Remember what I told you? Keep a low profile." His voice was low, a deep timbre that made gooseflesh erupt on her skin.

She nodded and managed a small smile.

"I won’t disappoint you."

"See that you don’t." Was his reply.

After that, it was into the garage. James got behind the steering wheel and everyone into the back seat.

"Are you nervous?" Harry asked suddenly, he eyed Lin wei curiously.

"You would think so wouldn’t you?" She smirked, "but no. I’m not nervous"

"Remember to stick close to us. I’d prefer if you don’t mingle very much. I don’t like it." Garry’s statement was as a matter of fact as always.

It was clear that he wasn’t really as comfortable as his brother with mingling. A small frown nestled between his brow, making him look so adorable. Her heart went out to him.

Poor baby. Forced to endure the endless tirade of adults. Their false affections and tight smiles.

"So, attending the party?" James drawled.

"It just happened," she flicked a glance to Harry.

"Yes, it just did. It’s not like this is the first time we’ll be attending the party. But I think Veronica was invited because she’s new." Garry stated.

Whatever the reason was, they would know soon as they had arrived at the destination of the party. Lin wei told herself she was getting immune to the display of wealth.

Boy, was she wrong. The looming building wasn’t like anything she’d ever had the fortune to see in all her life. The white stone wall was impressive against the stark black gate.

And the glass painted dome, that made the place look like a cross between a medieval castle and a luxurious five star hotel.

The glittering fountain in the slivery moonlight made her bit back a gasp. It was like a fairytale.

Hopefully it doesn’t turn into a nightmare. With an encouraging grin from James, Lin wei and the twins left the car.

Three bulky securities stood outside the door, their mouth twisted into unpleasant lines.

"Names and invitation?" The beefiest one of them inquired. With a voice as thick as asparagus soup. With that consistency too.

Lin wei provided the golden letter which he examined and a respectful glint entered his eyes immediately.

"Welcome ma’am." He bowed a little, as little as his thick neck would allow and turned to his left, "escort them in. Tier one."

And with that they were being led inside. If Lin wei thought the outside was pretty, the interior was pretty amazing.

Glided walls, marbled floor that reflected the glittering light from the several chandeliers hung above.

They were led to a separate alcove, in full view of the crowd. Everyone murmured quietly, a finger or two pointing in their direction.

The twins were probably used to all the attention, but Lin wei had her new personality to thank for her quick adjustment.

Making sure to keep her head held high, her mouth spread into a small smile.

A rounded table that was filled with different bottle of aged wine, cheese and fruit platters, was their name written in black italics.

Wang twins.

There are several other tables with the same setting, which had few occupants. They all had something in common.

Each one, dressed as extravagantly as she could imagine, which their children tucked beside them, stared at her in confusion.

They probably aren’t used to seeing new faces among them.

Lin wei decided it’ll be fitting if she didn’t greet anyone. What did Ezekiel said? Let everyone assume whatever the hell they wanted.

An orchestra was playing in the background, some classic music she wasn’t familiar with.

Waiters and waitress in sleek uniforms lurked at each corners, waiting for someone to demand something perhaps.

Lin wei noticed several other tables to the middle of the ballroom, with less glamour as the ones they were seated at.

Harry noticed her gaze and explain, "Those ones are tier two. They will be allowed to mingle with tier one after a while. Those people sitting without ta

ble? Tier three."

"What about those standing?" She whispered.

"Fourth tier or as they liked to refer to them as charity cases."

Lin wei wasn’t sure she’ll like this party so much.
