Contract Marriage starring Love and Revenge
Chapter 24. Custom-made glasses.

Chapter 24: 24. Custom-made glasses.

"The truth is, I used to wear glasses before." I confess. "But that was a long time ago. B_before I started dating Rowan. After I met him, he talked me into using contacts instead of glasses. He said I looked ugly in glasses."

"He said it like that? That you look ugly in glasses."

"Not exactly like that." I shrug with a forced smile, "He just explained to me that he was sometimes embarrassed to introduce me to his friends because they all usually taunted him for dating a girl with four eyes. And that I’d be better off without the glasses. ’You’ll look more presentable’ we’re his exact words."

I hear him mumble some words and at first I can’t decipher what he had said, but the seconds later, my brain registers his words, "scum-of-a-bitch." That’s the first time I’ve heard him curse out loud. I haven’t heard that expression before either.

"Well, I can’t say Rowan was the entire reason I began to use contacts in place of glasses. To be honest I was oblivious to the fact that people made fun of me in glasses. Being called four eyes was something I’d had to deal with from a very young age. So..."

"Yet, if he hadn’t mentioned it, you wouldn’t have switched to contacts."

"Maybe, maybe not. I don’t know." I shrug again, forcing a fake smile to my face.

"When you realized contacts weren’t comfortable for you why didn’t you stop using them?"

"Well at first, I honestly thought it was because it was my first time using them. I believed that if I continuously used them, I’d get comfortable with them." then I add, "eventually."

"But you never did."

"I tried changing the contacts, but they were all the same. Itchy, uncomfortable and disturbing."

"Then why did you keep using them?" Why does he sound angry? He’s not raising his voice but for some reason I can sense anger in his question.

"Because I didn’t want to embarrass him. I wanted to keep being presentable for him and—"

"That was foolish."

Those words... those words coming from him_ they hurt. Why do they hurt so bad? So bad that I want to cry.

"Now that you mention it," I let out a dry scoff, "I did a lot of foolish things to impress him... To impress a man who never loved me. I really am foolish."

"You’re not foolish, pagne." He suddenly says. "I never said you were foolish. Losing your comfort and hurting yourself unnecessarily to please someone else was foolish."

Is there a difference? Isn’t the person who acted foolishly foolish? Doesn’t that make me foolish?

"You’re not foolish," his hand suddenly cups the side of my face, and only when I feel his thumb caress my cheek do I realize the wetness there. I’ve been crying again.

"You are beautiful." No I’m not. He doesn’t need to lie to me. I know I’m not beautiful. If you’re talking of beauty, then he should see Alicia. She—

"And I think you will still look stunning in glasses. Maybe even more beguiling. That’s why I want you to have this." His left hand comes forward and in it is a golden case.

An eyeglass case.

My eyes move from the case to his face and I see the corner of his lips slightly curl up in a soft smile, "Y_you—" I don’t even know what to say.

"Hush now, dearest. Just try them on. I want to see who is right. Me? Or that blind scum of a bitch."

I sniffle and sniffle again and again, trying to understand everything that is going on right now. Did he really get me glasses?

I want to say he couldn’t have, but he’s holding the case in his hands right now, and it can’t be an empty case.

He couldn’t have known my eye condition, more or less the kind of glass that I would use. Or could he?

With a shaky breath, and a fast beating heart, I collect the case from him and his hand on my face slowly fall back to rest on the bed.

I open it and inside is a pair of gold-rimmed circular glasses with black temple-tips.

It’s love at first sight... I like that.

I love them... the weight is almost non-existent and the shape and choice of color is beautiful too. It’s beautiful.

"Go on, try it on." He urges. I can’t help the curl at the corner of my lips.

Quickly, take out the contacts, carefully place them back into their case and I’m ready to try these glasses.

It would be a shame if they don’t fit my eyesight. I really like them and—

"Oh my gosh," I gasp softly as I wear them and everything is clear! Everything is so damn clear! "Oh my gosh it fits!" I laugh as I test and retest to see if I can see all the words written on the documents sitting on my lap clearly.

"How did you— I mean how could you have gotten me the perfect glasses when you don’t even know what my eye defect is?"

"Getting your optical records was easy. And when I had it, I had the glasses custom-made just for you."

"Custom-made?!"

"See," He takes the case from me, takes out the microfiber cloth and shows me the inside of the case.

On the inside, written in one of the old English fonts is my name... Champagne Grand.

My heart seems to pause for a moment as I stare at the name and then at the man holding the case. He’s too kind. Why is he so kind? Why is he being so kind to me?

"Now let’s see." He says, placing the case back in my hands and holding onto my face with both of his hands, forcing me to stare right back at him.

"Indeed, Mary was right. That fool was blind." He says, and I can’t stop the laugh that flows through my lips as tears wells up in my eyes.
